An excellent read for any historian....

Memoirs of Chaplain Life: 3 Years in the Irish Brigade with the Army of the Potomac is written by Father William Corby, a Catholic Chaplain. I found this book to be an excellent book for my research because it really showed how life was from the perspective of a non-combatant. I just loved this book because you just know that Father Corby is pulling real life into it and everything just makes feel like you are actually there. Some parts are not exactly exciting and keeps you on the edge of your seat, so it's definitely written for someone who loves history in every sense. I just love reading about when Father Corby gives general absolution to the Brigade. So moving and awe-inspiring.

Should be a required read for anyone who truly loves history, the Civil War, the Irish Brigade, wants to be a Chaplain, or loves their Irish heritage.

A valuable Civil War memoir

Father Corby's Irish Brigade memoir provides a very valuable and interesting record of the Civil War. His testimony gives the reader a first-hand account of life in the Church and in the Army.
In some sections, the memoir is not terribly exciting; it is for the history buff who wants to know more than which general won a given battle. The book tells of the great and small trials of army life. Its value comes from the author's testimony about the lives of the soldiers and their experiences.
The book will best suit those who possess a knowledge of the war, as Father Corby's passing mention of campaigns and generals' names will be lost on the uninitiated.
I strongly recommend this book to those interested in Civil War and Irish history.

Grade 1-3-In this continuation of The Log Cabin Quilt (1996) and The Log Cabin Christmas (2000, both Holiday), Elvirey ponders her Granny's desire for a church. The story picks up right at the end of its predecessor: "`Come spring, we'll see about buildin' a church,' my pap had said at Christmastime." Elvirey can hardly remember the one back home, and as they work together on their Michigan homestead, she asks her siblings and Granny to tell her about it. Himler's framed full-page paintings warmly convey the unsettled land, the family, and the increasing number of neighbors. It's through the community spirit of a picnic gathering that Elvirey finally remembers the church back home and understands her Granny's longing for it. The story concludes with the expectation of a new church rather than the actual building of one, and it's likely that a future story will bring the growing settlement together for the building of a new house of worship. The bonds of home and family are skillfully realized in this pleasant episode, which will be enjoyed equally by readers who are just meeting this frontier family and those who have already spent time with them.

In this companion to The Log Cabin Quilt (1996) and The Log Cabin Christmas (2000), Elvirey; her brother, Bub; and Sis, Pap, and Granny are settled into their log cabin in the Michigan woods. Spring has arrived, and Pap is busy clearing fields, burning stumps, turning the soil, and planting corn and wheat. Granny and some of the neighbors are anxious to have a church, and so, one Sunday morning, the community gathers at Elvirey's cabin for singing, prayer, and fellowship. Elvirey associates church with her mother's funeral, but by questioning others she learns that religion means something different to everyone, and by the end of the story she realizes that the important part of a congregation is not the building but the community it serves. Howard's use of old-fashioned vocabulary and dialect (younguns and purty gals) adds to the authenticity, and Himler's sensitive artwork portrays many details of farm life in the bygone era. Each spread includes a full-page painting opposite a smaller drawing, which is placed beneath the text. A good choice for both church and public library collections, and because the story is nondenominational, it will be also useful for primary-grade units on pioneer life. Kay Weisman

Gr 3-5-Adler does a wonderful job of helping school-age children understand the concept that a million is a heck of a lot. He begins his explanations with things that children know. For example, he asks how many slices of pizza a million dollars would buy and tells readers they could acquire two entire pizza pies every day for 68 years. Grounding their thinking in something they already know helps youngsters begin to understand the enormity of the number. Similarly, he describes one billion in terms of how many hairs are on a typical human's head. One hundred thousand! If you gathered together ten thousand people you would have about one billion hairs. Trillions are difficult to imagine, and the book gives an example a good shot. Knowing that it is virtually uncountable is all that any of us needs to know. Miller's clean, clear digital graphics are lively and colorful, adding an extra bit of fun to the presentation. The book is perfectly suited to elementary students, who are able to think conceptually, and their foundational knowledge of math will help them make the leaps they will need to take to understand millions, billions, and trillions. This accessible picture book presents big numbers, considers how we use them, and offers a sense of the quantities they represent. For instance, we use millions to talk about the populations of cities. To see one million grains of sugar (or close to it), readers are instructed to spill a quarter cup of sugar onto a piece of dark construction paper. Though billions and trillions are trickier to represent in the kitchen or on the page, the book provides examples of how the terms are used. In an appended note, Adler comments on even bigger numbers: a quadrillion, a quintillion, and a sextillion, all obligingly written out in large numerals. An interesting note comments that different terminology is used in other parts of the world, where our billion is others’ milliard, and a trillion in the U.S. is a billion elsewhere. Inevitably, minds may still boggle at the large numbers represented here, but Adler’s text is imaginative as well as logical, and Miller’s brightly colored digital illustrations are cheerful and inventive. About the Author

David A. Adler is the author of nearly 200 books for children. He was a New York City mathematics teacher for nine years before becoming inspired to write his first book. When his wife gave birth to their first child, David stayed home to take care of his son and to write, which he has been doing ever since. He lives in Queens, NY with his wife Renee.

Edward Miller III has written, illustrated, and designed many books for children including "The Monster Health Book: A Guide to Eating Healthy, Being Active & Feeling Great for Monsters & Kids!", which he also wrote.  He is the illustrator of many popular math books, including Mystery Math; Fractions, Decimals, and Percents; and Fun with Roman Numerals. He lives in New York City.

Good For Older Children

This is a charming book. The examples are just right for explaining how large a number is and since it goes in sequential order, kids can see how the numbers get bigger and bigger. Kids and adults will get a kick out of the comparisons. It will be mindboggling for the readers to see how big these numbers are. The back page states this book meets one of the Common Core standards for 4th grade math. It certainly would be a good introduction, but its worth extends far beyond this age and interest level. I would buy this book again.

Insightful book on (water)colour

The main medium used in the book is watercolour, although it's strangely not mentioned in the title or the book description.

The 31 lessons in the book are quite comprehensive with practical tips on usage, and also explains the thought process behind using colours.

They cover picking and mixing colours, controlling greens, understanding warm and cool, using colour for shape composition, values, creating transitions, and much more. There's a sizeable amount of content devoted to glazing, and the differences compared to mixing. There are occasionally exercises.

There's quite a bit of text to go through, but it's a really insightful read. The author Jeanne Dobie is clearly very knowledgable about pigments and can explain effortlessly on how and why mixed colours appear as they do, and the underlying pigments that control colour shifts. One of the highlights of the book is about using colour as a design element, such as picking out shapes and using them as composition elements.

Overall, it's a great watercolour instructional book that can be read again and again because there are lots of useful information. It will give you the knowledge and all you have to do is go paint and experiment.

Recommended to beginners to advanced watercolour artists.

this book should be included on every watercolor artist book shelf.... I have refered to it for 25 years and it is still the best book on color there is.
you will not need to buy lots of tubes of paint. It will show you with a few basic colors you can create almost any color there is.....

I love this book but it is identical (except for the cover) to the original version which I already own. I gave it to a friend who is just starting in watercolor. Jeanne Dobie's art is at the top of what you can do with this medium and it will inspire anyone who is really interested in learning to use watercolor.

Encircling and sustaining our cultural existence is nature. Western philosophy has not generally provided adequate conceptual models for thinking ecologically. Thus the idea of "eco-ontology" undertakes to explore ways in which this might be done beginning with the primacy of Nature over Being, but also including the recognition of possibility and potentiality as inherent aspects of existence. I argue for the centrality of Dewey for an effective ecological philosophy. Both "pragmatism" and "naturalism" need to be contextualized within an emergentist, relational, non-reductive view of nature and an aesthetic, imaginative, non-reductive view of intelligence.

Mixed Emotions

I own both Facial Expression books by Mr. Simon and for such a popular series you'd think they'd invest in a better photographer or a better camera. A lot of the photos, especially in this edition are very blurry and grainy. Though you don't need super well-taken photos to capture someone's facial expression it would have been nice if they would have upped the quality in this edition. I imagine it is difficult to direct children, but a lot of the expressions used were very similar too. This version has about the same amount of photos as the last, but they are a bit larger. I believe they made this change because one page after each person captured wasn't reserved for an illustration. This was a welcome change for me because a lot of the artists used in the previous book did sub-par work and some only re-drew the photograph of the person without applying the facial expression to something less obvious like an object or a fictional character. Overall, my satisfaction with this book is mixed. The first edition was far better because of the image quality, but it is nice to have references of children's expressions. Having little books to compare these 2 to, I had to give this 3 stars.

About the Author

HERMANN LEVIN GOLDSCHMIDT (1914-1998) founded and directed the Jdisches Lehrhaus in Zurich from 1952 to1962. This is his first book to be translated into English.

DAVID SUCHOFF is Professor of English at Colby College. He is the author of Critical Theory and the Novel: Mass Society and Cultural Criticism in Dickens, Melville, and Kafka.

WILLI GOETSCHEL is Professor of German and Philosophy at the University of Toronto. He is the editor of the collected works of Hermann Levin Goldschmidt and author of Constituting Critique: Kant's Writing as Critical Praxis and Spinoza's Modernity: Mendelssohn, Lessing, and Heine.

Embraced the concept of multiculturalism before the word itself was commonly used

Written by Hermann Levin Goldschmidt (1914-1998), who founded and directed the Judisches Lehrhaus in Zurich from 1952 to 1962, and first published in 1957, Legacy of German Jewry is a thorough reexamination of the German-Jewish experience, now available in English translation. Part One explores the transition to modernity, retracing the philosophical accomplishments of thinkers such as Moses Mendelssohn, Spinoza, and religious figures such as Baal Shem Tov. This modern path embraces the concept that "remnants" of the radical past could provide ideas and impetus for re-envisioning the modern world. Part Two discusses the political history of the Jews in modernity and the facets of Jewish culture as perceived in German-Jewish thought and exemplified in the public figures of Leo Baeck, Hermann Cohen, and Franz Rosenzweig. Part Three examines the post-Auschwitz complex, and draws upon the Book of Job for strength to overcome the tremendous trauma inflicted by the horrors of the Holocaust. A visionary work that embraced the concept of multiculturalism before the word itself was commonly used, Legacy of German Jewry is highly recommended as a welcome contribution to Judaic studies shelves.

Few people today have ever heard of North Brother Island, though a hundred years ago it was place known to--and often feared by--nearly everyone in New York City. The island, a small dot in the East River, twenty acres slotted between today's gritty industrial shores of the Bronx and Queens, was a minor piece of the New York archipelago until the late 19th century, when calls for social and sanitary reform--and the massive expansion of the city's population--combined to remake NBI as a hospital island, a place to contain infectious disease and, later, other societal ills.

Abandoned since 1963, North Brother Island is a ruin and a wildlife sanctuary (it is the protected nesting ground of the Black-crowned Night Heron), closed to the public and virtually invisible to it. But one cannot mistake its abandoned state as a sign of its irrelevance to the city's history and culture. Traces of the extensive hospital campus remain, as do sites linked to notorious people (it was the final home of "Typhoid Mary") and events (the steamship General Slocum sank by its shores). It has stories to tell.

Photographer Christopher Payne (Asylum: Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals), was granted permission by New York City's Parks & Recreation Department to photograph the island over a period of years. The results are both beautiful and startling. On North Brother Island, devoid of human habitation for fifty years, buildings great and small are being consumed by the unchecked growth of vegetation. In just a few decades, a forest has sprung up where once there were the streets and manicured lawns of a hospital campus.

North Brother Island: The Last Unknown Place in New York City includes a history by University of Pennsylvania preservationist Randall Mason, who has studied the island extensively, and an essay by the writer Robert Sullivan (Rats, The Meadowlands), who came along on one of the rare expeditions.

Christopher Payne, a photographer based in New York City, specializes in the documentation of America's vanishing architecture and industrial landscape. Trained as an architect, he has a natural interest in how things are purposefully designed and constructed, and how they work. His first book, New York's Forgotten Substations: The Power Behind the Subway, offered dramatic, rare views of the behemoth machines that are hidden behind modest facades in New York City. His second book, Asylum: Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals, which includes an essay by the renowned neurologist Oliver Sacks, is the result of a seven-year exploration of America's vast and largely abandoned state mental institutions. Asylum was winner of the Ken Book Award of the National Alliance on Mental Illness/NYC and was named one of the "10 Best Art Books" by New York Times critic Holland Cotter.

Randall Mason is Associate Professor and Chair of the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Design. He worked previously at the Getty Conservation Institute, University of Maryland, and Rhode Island School of Design. His books include The Once and Future New York, on the origins of historic preservation in New York City, winner of the Antoinette Forester Downing Award), and Giving Preservation a History (with Max Page). In 2012, Mason held the National Endowment for the Arts Rome Prize at the American Academy in Rome.

Robert Sullivan is the author of numerous books, including The Meadowlands: Wilderness Adventures at the Edge of a City; Rats: Observations on the History and Habitat of the City's Most Unwanted Inhabitants; The Thoreau You Don't Know: The Father of Nature Writers on the Importance of Cities, Finance, and Fooling Around; A Whale Hunt, and, most recently, My American Revolution. His stories and essays have been published in magazines such as New York, The New Yorker, and A Public Space. He is a contributing editor to Vogue.

Beautiful book goes far beyond standard abandoned photography genre

Unlike other photographers of the abandoned, the work of Christopher Payne has always been about the delicate balance between human presence and physical structure. His study of the Steinway Factory in Astoria, Queens was simultaneously a conceptual exploration of abstraction, an architectural analysis, and how Steinway workers factor into the production space. Each of the workers he photographed had a story, and together, making a piano was like a choreographed dance.

Payne’s recently released book, North Brother Island: The Last Unknown Place in New York City is clearly an evolution of Payne’s particular type of photographic discovery. Of course, there are the perfectly framed images of North Brother Island’s infamous crumbling hospitals and of its industrial gantry. Then there are the interior shots of medical rooms whose ceilings look like they might fall any second.

But where his work goes beyond the abandoned photography genre is Payne’s methodological tracking of changes on North Brother Island across seasons. Unlike typical trespassers, Payne had access through the New York City Parks & Recreation Department to photograph the island over the course of a year. With vintage images set side by side with present-day, another underlying theme in these photos of North Brother Island is the continuing presence of humans even into today.

With essays by Robert Sullivan, author of the fantastic New York City book, Rats, and Randall Mason, a professor at PennDesign, North Brother Island: The Last Unknown Place in New York City is truly a book for urban explorers and New York enthusiasts.

Beautiful

The photos are haunting and beautiful. This is a great coffee table book. I stayed up late last night reading this...highly recommend for yourself or as a gift.

a real unknown gem!

This "coffee table" book answered so many questions I had formed when I lived in New York City several years ago and I plan to take the brief tour when I return. Who would have known that so close to the urban rush of the City, there is this paradox from the past! The myriad photos and the poignant story are truly gifts to everyone who has never considered the possibilities of seeing a glimpse of how "we" might have found some of this area a hundred years or more in the past. My ancestors came to Long Island from Halifax in the 1600s and I can now really appreciate the natural beauty they must have seen as they landed on the shore and began to explore their newly chosen homeland. This book is truly a work of wonder - not your everyday reading selection by any means, but a generous gift for the imagination and appreciation of those of us who seek to know and understand our past from the viewpoint of the what we see now! Thank you 7-great grandparents for coming to New York!
