About the Author
Mary Amato is now known for her comic middle-grade novels. "The Word Eater" was Ms. Amato's first novel. She is also the author of "Snarf Attack", "Underfoodle, and the Secret of Life: The Riot Brothers Tell All", as well as "The Naked Mole-Rat Letters". Ms. Amato is a storyteller, poet, puppeteer, mask-maker, and quilt-maker, too. She makes her home just outside Washington, D.C.

Raucous, Good-Humored Fun

The Riot Brothers Rule 1 is "Make Something Exciting Happen Every Day." In this third volume in the Riot Brothers series they live up to that motto.

This is a funny and engaging book anchored by two very appealing brothers. The boys aren't little Mr. Perfects; far from it. But there is an overarching gung-ho good humor and decency in these books that is fun, entertaining and endearing.

Our hero brothers are third grader Orville and fifth grader/narrator Wilbur. First off, they like each other and appreciate each other. They back each other up and they work off each other, whether they're making up games, or scheming, or just sharing wisdom about the world. Wilbur complements Orville when he has a good idea or adds something to a plan. Orville obviously admires his older brother. They are a team. This is greatly enhanced by Mom. She has some funny lines; she stays out of the way but always knows what's going on; she lets the boys loose until it's time to rein them in, and she is a comfortable and level-headed presence in all of the stories.

But the best part is that mostly the boys play wildly imaginative make believe. They try to save a damsel in distress, even if, as Wilbur observes, "All of the girls I know can rescue themselves". They try to fool their Mom on April 1. They decide to become mad scientists. They make up fun games. They amuse themselves and each other. They invent a morphing machine. They make up a sock game and a fake eyeball game. They are funny and they have fun. There is tremendous madcap energy in everything they do, (never walk when you can run), but the stories themselves never get out of control and each plot ties up nicely by the end. (The book is set up as three "mini-books", so it is nicely bite sized for a young reader.)

All of this is accompanied by Wilbur's deadpan commentary on life and the "Riot Brothers Rules". That commentary is both insane and sometimes accidentally right on point, which adds an element of thoughtfulness that is so rare in boys' humor books. There is no snarkiness and no meanness; even the required bully isn't very threatening, just grumpy.

The books are well-written. Vocabulary is age appropriate, with a few challenges here and there. There is no irony or self-parody; the author never mocks the genre. Everything that happens seems to be within the experience and understanding of a very young reader, although some of the more subtle jokes may go over their heads. But a bit of challenge is nice to see in a book like this. The drawings complement the action very well and would probably really help a younger reader to visualize what's going on. That's a nice benefit.

So, the upshot is that this book struck me as a very appealing read, with a lot of upside and entertainment value. What a nice find.

Love Those Riot Brothers

My son loves reading about the RIot Brothers. They are a series of books that never gets old for him. These are a fun, not-too-challenging-to-read set of stories that he turns to again and again. While there are no set "lessons to be learned" objectives hidden in the book, you can always appreciate the gifts of humor, creativity and having a goal to make your life more interesting. This one rates highly with all of the other Riot Brothers stories in our household.

Heinz Kohut is has a very importante role, often underestimated, on the thinking and developing of the pshychoanaltical approach.
This book is not a simple Reading, but certainly will be of interest to those who practice psychoanalysis and are daily faced with the challenges of narcissistic personalities, and are willing to going deeper into the view of a man who fully dedicated himslef to finding means to approach his clinical challenges.

Hans Kohut analyses narcissistic symptoms in terms of the classic behavioral axes: (1) attitudes to the self and (2) attitudes to others.

Everyone matures with normal (1) positive self-esteem and self confidence and (2) admiration for others and the ability for enthusiasm. (Adults)

Narcissistic personality disorders are less mature states. (1) Attitudes to the self reveal solipsistic claims for attention, grandiosity, and hypochondria. Attitudes to others reveal (2) compelling needs to merge with idealized parent imagos, or omnipotent objects with religious feelings and vague awe. (Hollywood)

Psychotic narcissism combines (1) delusional reconstitution of the grandiose self as cold, paranoid grandiosity with (2) delusional reconstitution of the omnipotent other, like powerful persecutors and influencing machines. (Hitler)

The book is for treatment professionals, and so details how narcissistic personality disorders respond to treatment and how therapists handle their own narcissism in the processes. Such patients transfer their idealized concept of themselves ('mirror transference') and of their parents ('idealizing transference') onto the therapist. The therapist's problem is to interpret the patient's grandiose self and his idealized parent images without provoking the patient to resistance by idealizing the therapist or resistances like cold, imperious behavior, affectations, and unrealistic grandiose feats. Interpretations work back through to the patient's early fragmented auto-erotic body-mind self-conscious, hypochondria about physical and mental health; and perverse fantasies and activities.

Narcissistic personality disorders and psychoses are formation of very early childhood. Clinical examples explain, for instance, how a self-absorbed, hypochondriacal, depressed mother early deprives her infant of the attention, approval, and encouragement that infants need to develop positive self-esteem and admiration for others. The mother's narcissistic use of the child results in infantile grandiosity that spits off from repressed demands related to the mother's rejection of the child. 'Splitting' means that the patient is simply not aware of the infantile grandiosity that others see. This is a 'vertical split' in the personality, a condition of total unconsciousness that popular fiction called 'split personality.' But there is also 'horizontal' splitting, or repression. The low self-esteem, thin-skinned propensity to shame, and hypochondria are real conditions of the patient, split off horizontally by repressions, like 'forgotten' memories.

Theoretical content includes an amendment to Sigmund Freud's metapsychology and a dismissal of Melanie Klein's metapsychology. The amendment to Freud is this analysis of splitting into vertical and horizontal dimensions. The dismissal of Klein is a surprising misjudgment of her extensive observations on splitting in terms of protecting introjected object-relations from hostile impulses.

The style of writing is perfect and so turgid but consistent; ponderous but methodological; and respectful of patients but full of the therapist. But the reading is worth it. Three diagrams give clear summaries; and there are both index and bibliography.

About the Author
James Craig is a renowned author of books on graphic design, including Basic Typography: A Design Manual. He was the design director of Watson-Guptill Publications for more than twenty-five years; today he teaches typography at The Cooper Union in New York City, where he lives.



William Bevington, executive director of Parsons Institute for Information Mapping, New School University. He teaches at Parsons School of Design in New York and lives in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey.

A concise, well thought out and easily understood typography text book

As a professor teaching typography to beginning graphic design students,I find this book well organized and covering all the important aspects of designing with type. This book,if properly used, will give the student of type design a head start on understanding the page layout applications when they start working on the computer. I applaud James Craig for all the thought and organization that he put into this book. For all of you interested in type and type design, rush to buy this book.

A solid introduction

Designing With Type is an excellent introduction to the art of typography. Any student of graphic design should have this book in his/her library. The book is spiral bound which makes it easy to lay flat and examine the many examples of typefaces given.

Judging from my own experience teaching typography, students appreciate the simple, logical approach to the fundamentals of typography found in James Craig's book 'Designing with Type.' This book deserves praise for enabling students to explore essential knowledge on the subject.

As before, she discusses how to estimate the cost of materials and labor required for the installation or application of paint, wall coverings, carpeting, drapery, bed coverings, and tablecloths with an expanded chapter on upholstery and an additional chapter on hard flooring, all illustrated with clear line drawings. Sample work orders are provided, with blank ones moved from an appendix to each applicable chapter. Although designed for students and professional interior designers, large public library collections will find this book useful.

Budgeting for interior decorators

I bought this book to help prepare for a professional exam which includes drapery and wallcovering calculations. I doubt it will be of any use to me after that.

If the book explained how to put together a preliminary budget based on square footage, it would be useful. Instead, it explains how to calculate yardage requirements for various softgood interior finishes like carpet and drapery. These aren't really estimates--they are concrete calculations. And they require substantial knowledge of the job conditions--precise window measurements and design such as drapery fullness and pleat type.

In other words, this book might be helpful if you were an interior decorator working on a retail basis and need to know how much yardage to buy and send to the workshop to fabricate a client's draperies.

It is not helpful if you are a project manager or interior designer needing to put together a preliminary budget for a client based on an initial interview and square footage. It doesn't include estimating for drywall, ceilings, light fixtures, etc.

I've also noticed some typos in the math calculations.

Overall, I think the title is misleading.

Great estimating guide

Good for people just entering the interior design business, where they're unsure of how to estimate costs for various items. This takes you through it all, pretty much step-by-step. It's complete with diagrams and examples of schedules that you'd write up to pass on to painters, tilers, and the like. The only disadvantage is that I have to translate all the measurements, as they're all in yards and feet.

However, in all my developmental/psychoanalytic study, I have never read a more concise, clear, compassionate and easy-to-read account of healthy development of aggressive urges. Boring. Don't be misled by the cover photograph. This book might be of some interest to commercial architects, but it is definitely NOT a dream back for someone who fancies photos of magnificent staircases.

Book should be renamed, "Commercial Staircases"

I bought this book, hoping to find pictures of residential staircases, from old and new houses. Instead, I was disappointed to find the book had only commercial staircases. While some of the staircases are quite intriguing, such as a glass staircase, the author should have named the book, "Commercial Staircases" or had a line on the cover which described the true contents of the book. so, buyer beware: buy this book only if your interest is in the commercial application of staircases.!

Ethnic politicians (and a few were women!) like their native-born counterparts, actively recruited young men into regiments- in this case regiments based upon the country of origin of the recruits. There were dozens of such regiments, mostly German and Irish, but also a Scandinavian unit, a polygot outfit, and there was an attempt to form a Scottish regiment. AS the war progressed and casualties mounted, these regiments gradually lost their ethnic composition. Ethnic entreprenuers were the key figures in the organization of these regiments, and such men ordinarily intended to parlay their military service into a post-war political career. Burton examines the impact ethnic entreprenuers had during the war, both by their key role in the organization of their regiments and by their post-war political careers.

Melting Pot Soldiers is the story of how immigrants responded to the drama of the Civil War. When the war began in 1861, there were, in most states in the North, large populations of immigrants (primarily from Western Europe) whose leaders were active in American politics at the local, state, and national level. A characteristic feature of the formation of the Union armies was the role played by politicians in the recruitment of the regiment, the basic unit of the army. There were dozens of such regiments, mostly German and Irish, but also a Scandinavian unit, and there was an attempt to form a Scottish regiment. As the war progressed and casualties mounted, these regiments gradually lost their ethnic composition. Ethnic entrepreneurs were the key figures in the organization of these regiments, and such men ordinarily intended to parlay their military service into a post-war political career. Some succeeded; some lost their lives. The book stresses the social and political situation in the Union states from which the phenomenon of the ethnic regiments emerged, the individual leaders involved, relationships with the larger society, political fighting within and between the various ethnic groups, and the impact the war had on the ethnics. Central to this book is the theme that the war promoted assimilation - something of a paradox given the creation of separate regiments. Most immigrant volunteers, by the way, served in regiments that were not of specific ethnicity.

This is a very good and highly readable overview of the various "ethnic" regiments that made up the Union forces during the Civil War. From funny to heartbreaking to admirable, the stunning variety of soldiers that entered the Union armies is fascinating. Some regiments were specifically formed to take in ethinc soldiers of a certain nationality but when few recruits of that group joined they took in all comers. The ethinic makeup of the Union forces was often times as colorfull as their wide variety of uniforms.

A wonderful, powerful look at the life of an actor.

Not since Simon Callow's BEING AN ACTOR has a book so thoroughly explored the life, the passion, and the plight of being in the theater.
Simonson has selected a quartet of very talented but lesser-known performers and created insightful, sensitive but unflinching portraits of each. One closes the book having been exposed to the erratic and always challenging life of an actor. Simonson writes with authority but allows the individual personalities to shape each of the sections.
It is a book not just to be read but to be re-read. I hope that it will soon become a staple in acting classes on all levels as well as for the generally curious.

The Life of an actor

Robert Simonson has taken 4 working actors and takes us on a wonderful journey about their career and lives. The actors he interviewed are Austin Pendleton, Lois Smith, Gloria Foster and Ron Rifkin. While giving us all the necessary biographical statistics, the actors tell us how they built their careers and how they approached various roles. The thing that makes this book so interesting is the fact that these are not celebrities. They are hard working and respected actors in their profession. Anyone interested in acting or theatre should read this book. It is a great read!!!!

Thoroughly enjoyable! This is a book I will definitely read again. The perspectives of four hard-working actors in Role of a Lifetime are analogous to many careers, it's just so much more interesting to read about an individual's decisions, sacrifices, successes, and determination in the realm of stage and screen. Well-written chronicles of four fascinating journeys!

But these programs also encouraged the creation of a newfound “Kyrgyzness” that preserved aspects of local traditions and celebrated the achievements of Kyrgyz citizens in the building of a new state. These ideals proved appealing to many Kyrgyz, who, for centuries, had seen riches and power in the hands of a few tribal chieftains and Russian imperialists.

This book offers new insights into the formation of modern cultural identity in Central Asia. Here, like their imperial predecessors, the Soviets sought to extend their physical borders and political influence. But Igmen also reveals the remarkable agency of the Kyrgyz people, who employed available resources to meld their own heritage with Soviet and Russian ideologies and form artistic expressions that continue to influence Kyrgyzstan today.

For even a casual reader...

This book is an "excellent read". Don't be frightened off thinking it will be purely an academic experience. Dr. Igmen is an excellent writer. This book is well grounded in research, but it reads so well you don't feel like you have to pull out your highlighter and take notes. It is also a fascinating look at an area that is under represented in history and literature. This book shows how real people reacted to Soviet governance and how it affected their lives. The people and their stories are real, memorable and worthy of reading about.

Reading "Speaking Soviet"

A must-read for anyone interested in Central Asian and Soviet politics and culture. This is the first insightful study of Soviet cultural discourse through the lens of Kyrgyz cultural development. It differs from previous one-dimensional scholarship by demonstrating the interplay between Soviet cultural policies and Kyrgyz participation and collaboration in the making of their own culture. It's an important contribution and an interesting read.

A sustained engagement with contemporary Jewish thought

While Elliot Wolfson has employed contemporary Jewish thinking in many of his works, using it to explicate Kabbalah, Dreams, Hassidism, and Phenomenology (and vice-versa), in this book he directly tackles a series of the most important 20th century Jewish thinkers: Cohen, Rosenzweig, Buber, Levinas, Derrida, and Wyschogrod. Organized around the theme of negative theology (apophasis) Wolfson combs through these thinkers looking for traces of 'theomania': ways in which they, despite their intentions, falling into the trap of anthropomorphism if only in order to establish a God-relationship. To take Levinas as an example: after carefully demonstrating that his work is closer to Heidegger's than most Levinasians would like to admit, Wolfson makes a compelling argument that Levinas' insistence upon preserving a inter-personal ethics leads him into an ethically problematic personification of the divine. Given the prevalence of near hagiographic writings on Levinas, this treatment is most welcome.

This book's studies are valuable if only because Wolfson manages to engage these writers in a manner that is both sympathetic and critical: these are not the usual 'pious' readings that emerge from Jewish studies. Conversely, the critiques offered are 'internal,' in that these thinkers are shown to be lacking on their own terms. More importantly: these thinkers are explored in relation to theological and atheological questions that are being asked outside of strictly 'Jewish' thinking, and to this end he treats a host of contemporary Christian thinkers (Caputo, DeVries, and company), avoiding the usual parochialism that dogs much contemporary philosophy and (a)theology. Metaphors and concepts that typically stand in the way of thinking--such as the 'face,' the 'gift,' the 'differential'--are subjected to an almost ruthless scrutiny. Wolfson thus drags the entire discourse surrounding apophasis and atheology forward, subjecting a host of texts and thinkers to a rigorous criticism they have too often managed to avoid.

This is essential reading for anyone engaged with contemporary religious thinking.

Apophasis of Apophasis

Giving Beyond the Gift is, on the one hand, esoteric and meticulously artistic in its language, and, on the other hand, relevant to the questions and ponderings of the average person living in the (post)modern world. It’s rare to find an academic work that also manages to relate itself to universal questions of belief.

In this case, the universal question of belief that Wolfson examines is the question of belief itself, or whether it’s possible to reach a theism that is completely free from the “idols” of anthropomorphism and theological materialism, which Wolfson calls “theomania.” Although Wolfson most explicitly assigns himself the task of critiquing the apophatic thought of several twentieth-century Jewish thinkers, he situates them within the deeper context of man’s grappling with the idea of God throughout the history of both Western and Eastern thought. Although traditions as diverse as Mahayana Buddhism, Platonism and neo-Platonism, the Medieval via negativa, and Enlightenment rationalism all play a role, Wolfson controls his material and manages to subsume it all into a call for a new, radical apophasis of apophasis.

Some might find this troubling, but all will find this book is well worth the read.

Rarely do you find a scholar who continually breaks new ground in his or her publications - Wolfson is an exception. This book not only breaks new ground, but also deals with one of the questions of our age: how can we, in a postmodern world, have a concept of God?

Bringing both modern philosophers and Jewish thinkers to bear on Judaism, Wolfson explores the paradox of transcendence and immanence vis-a-vis idolatry, in light of apophatic theology and the postmodern condition.

This is not a casual read; one actively engages Wolfson in his exploration of these topics via reading, and through that engagement, we learn to think anew, to think more deeply. Thus, I would heartily recommend this book to those interested in theology, philosophy, and/or Jewish thought.
