Very Comprehensive Guidance

I cannot put this book away. I've been through it probably three times and every time I learn more. This is an incredible guide on pastel portraits -- from palette, to technique, to setting, to composition, every aspect. Written in a wonderful way as it gives me the feeling of hanging out with the best pastel portrait artist and just soaking up everything she is telling me.

Life on the island is insular, but for those who live there, it is never dull. Bright and cheerful describe the watercolor pictures, and they are in total complement to the brief text on each page. Clean in appearance, the book offers insightful information in a manner as fresh as a sea breeze. It lends itself naturally to units on where and how others live. Not as great as Gail Gibbons others

I was a bit dissappointed in this book when I received it. My son and I have read numerous books by this author and have found most of them to be excellent, thought-provoking and able to keep both our interests, but this one fell a bit flat. This one is not as simply written as other titles in how it formats its information to be to-the-point but with quirky and fun facts along the way. (We love the Dinosaur Discoveries, Apples, The Moon, Wolves) The way this book is written isn't as easily followed by the younger child (my son is 3). I think this is meant for a more mature child (age 6 and up). A detailed book with information about New England fishing and summer island life but just not as interestingly done unless the child is specifically interested in this topic and a bit older. I would recommend her other books more.

Fisher's simple, prosaic text is arguably a valid choice for accessibility, but the biblical original--in any standard translation--would do his heroic art more honor. His figures are monumental, yet subtly characterized: David strong yet complex and introspective; Saul ambivalent, a touch self-indulgent; Goliath thick-necked and brutish. His palette of intense color--apricot, sharp greens and pinks, rich blues and purples, dramatically highlighted and shadowed--is extraordinarily effective. This is a really well illustrated full retelling of the story. David's backstory with Saul is included. It is the only picture book I know of which includes David cutting off Goliath's head and holding it up (no blood or gore though). The writing is very high quality and understandable for young children.

Writing in an engaging style, the McKissacks follow the woman's life chronologically. The daughter of influential, black upper-class parents, her early childhood in Chicago was studded with visits from African-American notables, such as W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes, Jesse Owens, and Duke Ellington. However, from an early age, she identified with those of her race who suffered the effects of poverty and discrimination. After she left college prematurely, she moved to New York where her writing career began in earnest. Throughout her life she was dedicated to the cause of civil rights and made her unique mark as a writer, a speaker, and an activist. This biography is divided into three long chapters, each covering a specific period of Hansberry's life. The text has been researched extensively and is well documented. It includes several references to telephone interviews with Hansberry's older sister Mamie and excerpts from the playwright's personal journal. The black-and-white photographs are well reproduced and do a fine job of supplementing the text. A time line and index are helpful reference aids. Gr. 8^-12. Hansberry once noted that she was sent to kindergarten on Chicago's South Side too well dressed for the Depression years. "The kids beat me up; and I think it was from that moment I became a rebel." The youngest child of successful, politically involved parents who encouraged their children to succeed, Hansberry grew up in a spirited, intellectual atmosphere in which the likes of Paul Robeson, Langston Hughes, Jesse Owens, and others were entertained in her home. From an early age, she was aware of the tensions of racism that divided American society. Her father was party to a major Supreme Court case, Hansberry v. Lee, which invalidated a racially restrictive housing covenant. She studied briefly at the University of Wisconsin but left for the livelier confines of New York City in the early 1950s, where she wrote for Freedom, a monthly commentary founded by Robeson. She married Robert Nemiroff and began to write the play that became A Raisin in the Sun, and that work, of course, went on to make dramatic history. The McKissacks' biography sparkles with the energy and passion that characterize their subject. Readers can drink in the whole civil rights history of much of this century and an in-depth treatment of Hansberry's major play, along with her fascinating life, which cancer ended prematurely in 1965. A playwright who is well known to readers through A Raisin in the Sun is given fair tribute by the McKissacks (Rebels Against Slavery, 1996, etc.), who also provide a window into the times in which Hansberry lived. Born in 1930, the fourth child of a prosperous family living on Chicago's South Side, Hansberry played childhood games and reported mixed views about her role as baby of the family. The McKissacks make clear, however, that from Hansberry's earliest days, her parents were raising her to ``advance the cause of African-American equality through intelligent and articulate leadership.'' She grew up ``listening to NAACP lawyers planning legal strategies in her living room''; surrounded by influential adults, she learned to express herself, seeking comfort in the aftermath of the bombing of Pearl Harbor by writing about ``clouds, flowers, and music.'' After college graduation and marriage to Robert Nemiroff, she took up residence in Greenwich Village, New York City, where a windfall from her songwriter-husband's efforts allowed her to concentrate on her writing. Her death at age 34 comes through as a decisive loss to the American theatre; the authors cull from her short, high-impact life a thorough, very readable, work. Determined to Succeed

Young,Black,and Determined:A Biography of Lorraine Hansberry is an excellant book for young adults. Frederick and Patricia McKissick's biography clearly states that Lorraine was sent to Kindergarten too well dressed (in her white fur coat)on Chicago's South Side. She grew up a rebel due to the fact that the kids beat her up. Lorraine grew up listening to her parents making clear, that she was "equal" and listening to the NAACP lawyers in her living room planning legal strategies. Lorraine learned to express herself and she wrote the play A Raisin in the Sun which later made dramatic history. Her life ended early from cancer. She had a fascinating life and the readers can re-live this and learn about the 1960's and how it has impacted our society. As a teacher, I would use this book and talk about current issues such as: discrimination, diversity, how we can impact our community, issues facing kids living in the inner city, and compare and contrast life of the 1960's on a teenager to the life of one today. Activities for my students would be to have students create a timeline of their own life, or have students develop and implement a community service project to help those in need in our society. Great book, a must to read!

It is such a pleasure to turn the pages of a book by Lewin (What Am I? Where Am I? 2013). His lush, realistic watercolor paintings immerse the reader in whatever exotic locale has caught his attention—in this case, it’s the green, teeming Costa Rica rain forest. Simple language challenges children to spot birds, mammals, reptiles, and a crab. Some are easy to find, such as the howler monkey hanging from a branch or the brilliant-red poison dart frog resting on a fallen tree, but some animals, such as the nearly submerged spectacled caiman or the vine snake, whipping its way up a tree trunk, are more of a challenge. The atmosphere is quiet and watchful as a toucan nibbles at a fig, a river otter peers from beneath a canopy of sunlit leaves, and a land crab scuttles into its burrow. The full-color illustrations on double-page spreads are soft and pleasing. Each animal is identified on a key page in the back. Lovely, engaging early-reader fare. Ted Lewin, the Caldecott Honor Award winning illustrator of Peppe the Lamplighter, brings his talent and skill to this wonderful non-fiction text for beginning readers. Can You See Me? features animals the author saw when he visited Costa Rica.The illustrations were created using pencil, watercolor, and liquid mask on Strathmore bristol. Each animal is camoflauged within each two page spread. Once found, the hidden animals help the emergent reader to predict the simple text and be a success in reading the book. Themes associated with this title include the following: animals (non-fiction), easy readers, and science and nature.

This title is recommended for first grade, or children between the ages of 4 - 8. It is leveled at C based on the Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading Level and focuses on reading standards for Literature and Foundational Skills in the English Language Arts Common Core Standards for kindergarten through second grade.

A friend in the entertainment business gave me Legal Aspects of the Music Industry as an early Christmas present when I told him I was thinking of handling my cousin's band. There are other books on the "music industry" but this one gives you a step by step run down of how to avoid being ripped off and how to get things done right...from the start. Schulenberg knows his stuff particularly contracts and rights. Even if you are contemplating a career in the music business, get this book, it's worth every penny!

In the beginning there was music as a form of communication. Next it became an art limited by a composers own imagination. Now it is a multi-billion dollar a year industry governed by more legal aspects than one could possibly imagine. Wading through the exceptional amount of contractually paperwork and legal jargon defining the complexity of the music business is Legal Aspects of the Music Industry. From lawyers looking for a simplified explanation for a client, to artists looking to better arm themselves to all the label reps, producers, managers, agents and so on in-between Legal Aspects... leaves no one out and no stone unturned. If you are an aspiring music artist or a personal manager, you will inevitably come into contractual situations that require the employment of an entertainment attorney. This book will help you to understand some of the basic clauses that are found in most of the common industry contracts; however, for the true industry novice, much of the information contained here will go over your head. It does provide shrewd, practical advice on how to approach legal situations in a general sense, but its effectiveness will be best maximized when used to understand and improve communications with your attorney about whatever legal situation you are considering or negotiating.

About the Author
Albert Handell studied at the Art Students League of New York. Since 1961, he has received more than 50 prizes and awards. His paintings are in many public and private collections and numerous museums. Leslie Trainor Handell graduated from Mount St. Mary College, Newburgh, New York, with a B.A. in history, and from Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont, with an M.A. in Spanish. exhaustive coverage of one artist's work

I bought "Intuitive Light" to learn more about techniques in pastel media. I thought the book is useful in this regard. The book could have been much better if other work was also displayed and discussed. The entire book shows nothing but Albert Handell's paintings. In my own opinion I like to see painting instruction show lots of different artist's work.

This book is a winner. Alfres Handell is a master painter. Intuitive Light is the most elusive and the Most Important aspect of painting. Using his own work to illustrate his instruction gives the book strengh, clarity and depth.

I recommend this book for any pastelist who can't attend one of Mr Handell's workshops, and for anyone who has. This book sums, illustrates, and reinforces what Mr Handell teaches.

I took a workshop from Alfred two years ago. He helped me to "see" and to develop and strenghen my own style and my work. I didn't grasp everything he taught in the workshop so this book is a useful extention of the workshop.

The workshop participants were rapt as he explained his techniques while he demonstrated. He seems to see what he paints with magical eyes. And how he translates what he sees with deft strokes also magic. By reading his commentary and studying his illustrations in the book, one can make progress in learning to see and to translate that vision onto pastel board.

Alfred is a sweet gruff. His lovely wife, Louise, also an accomplished artist, accompanies him on workshops. The love and respect they have for each other is reflected in the calm and respectful atmosphere of their workshops. In turn, the workshop participants are respectful of each other; encouraging rather than competitive. I can "hear" Aflred talking in his Brooklyn accent as I'm reading the book. Alfred, through this and his other books, will help you improve your work.

Teaches how to "see" and "feel" light.

Not a workshop-type paint-by-numbers book, the book is more a photo-gallery packed with colorful, clearly rendered paintings. The text illustrates how the artist "sees" light under different conditions, for "light" itself is the subject matter Mr. Handell's paintings. The artist/author is very cognizant of the emotional effect that light conditions create in a viewer, and extremely gifted at translating this response through pigment. The paintings in this book show the success of Mr. Handell's emotional approach. Gives insight into "seeing" and "frame of mind".
