The contributors to this volume examine the histories, politics, and cultures of the Andean nations, and argue that, due to their shared history and modern circumstances, these countries are suffering a shared crisis of deteriorating relations between state and society that is best understood in regional, not purely national, terms.  The results, in some cases, have been semi-authoritarian hybrid regimes that lurch from crisis to crisis, often controlled through force, though clinging to a notion of democracy. The solution to these problems--whether through democratic, authoritarian, peaceful, or violent means--will have profound implications for the region and its future relations with the world.

This book is absolutely delightful! The clarity of presentation with techniques, patterns and finished projects lends itself to becoming a well-worn resource. The only drawback is that I wanted it to be double the size with even more patterns and gallery pictures! What wonderful lay-out! I took it to bed for a week just to feed my soul.

Inspired!

This book inspired me to make paste paper immediately. I have learned many of the techniques within this book firsthand from very talented book artists. Then for the last 3 years I taught young children, adolescents and adults how to make paste paper, to make their own journals and even luminaries. I saw this book on the web. I don't know how I missed it before, but am actually grateful I found it now. It showed up at a time when I felt ready to go deeper. It is well organized, with colorful detailed examples. Great for beginners and those with experience. So! This summer I am playing with this book. I'm making my own brayers and practicing the various papers illustrated. Thank you, thank you, for this dear book!

This book is one of the most enjoyable, helpful and inspiring book I have read. I had not worked with paste paper before, and this book has precise instructions on how to begin exploring this art and what issues to anticipate. The best thing is, the book shows you how to make beautiful art with things found lying around the house. Having read the book, I see possible paste paper tools in everything around me, and I would buy this author's other books.

This book demystifies what appears to be a difficult and therefore unapproachable art form. The surprising simplicity of the process becomes clear as Margit Malmstrom lives up to her promise of "taking the fear and mystery out of terracotta sculpture". I collect books on hobbies and crafts, particularly from the '30s through '70s.
There was a period when people made things, and most hobbies were hands on. People made just about everything, and were very proud of their handicraft. Even if I do no more than read the books, I love the reference to the diferent styles and times. Anyone out there remember "grape lamps"?
I also make jewelry which I sell, and sometimes like to use old techniques rather than follow the "buy a bead" school of design. Look for and read these old books if you can find them; they are really fun even if you don't do anything with your hands.

I have been reading the editions of this book since the 80's. It is the bible of the industry of music. Shemel and Krasilovsky are experts. I hired Shemel for several project in the past when it was living, he knows his stuff. RIP in Sidney.

Best Reference on the Subject: Owning This Book Is a Must

As the grandson of the prominent composer Nathaniel Shilkret, who left a legacy of several hundred works--many published by the company bearing his name, I was in need of information about the music business, with a presentation that is understandable by the layman. After obtaining several books about the music business, I found that this book uniquely fitted my needs. It is comprehensive, completely up-to-date, clear and very well organized . My relation to the composer placed me in an unusual situation not addressed in other books, but all the details of the recent (1998) relevant law were included and easy to find in "This Business of Music." This information saved me from losing royalty income. This book is not a page-turner novel for an easy night's entertainment; it is a quality reference book to be used over the years by anyone who has a serious need for information about the BUSINESS of music. Also, when I bought the book, I found it included a useful bonus: a CD with relevant laws and, more importantly, relevant sample contracts. I have many useful books in my library that are five or more times the price of this book but do not contain as much information.

Performing, Promoting and Producing music is one thing. Music Law is another - - and when you're not a million dollar record company but just another guy trying to make and promote music, and you can't afford $200.00 an hour for *multiple* legal consultations, you might be at a disadvantage, especially when you're dealing with slicksters who do.
This book for long has been one of the few serious resources available to individuals who need to really understand "the industry" and the laws relating to you and it (including how to protect your own work and performances as well as making agreements with other people, and not infringing copyright law.) About 5 years ago it underwent a major make over to deal with the digital revolution and other chages in the industry (including the Digital Millenium Copyright Act of 1998) and now even has a CD rom with plenty of printable legal documents, including 23 sample agreements.
The book might not have any cute picures and rock and roll stories, but if you need a serious understanding about everything fo contracts, agreements, performing rights, protecting ideas and titles, agents and managers, various legislation and so on and so forth, this is an essential work of reference. It is defitely *not* just another "Cheesy Wannabe Pop Star Magazine Presents : How To Get Your Demo Heatf and Become a Big and Groovy Recording Artist" type book, nor is it written in such legalese, that you need a lawyer to disencipher it... it is basically the definitive reference manual for any individual involved or getting involved in the music industry to have on hand.

A Must-Have!

What a terrific book! It's a fun read filled with great tips and tools. Anybody who is interested in the performing arts will get a kick out of it, not just actors and directors.
Delia Salvi explains exactly how to diagnose and fix a flat scene. She explains specifically how to work with all different kinds of actors and help them give their best performance. She is very passionate about her work and it shows in her writing. I feel having this book is like having a Hollywood professional as my own personal mentor.
Also, just as it helps directors to understand the acting process, (which she explains) it also helps actors to grasp the directing process. She makes it all easy to understand and apply.
But, I'd say my favorite part of the book is the interviews with working actors and directors. It's really worth it just to read her interviews with Geena Davis and Alexander Payne. They tell you all about how it works in the real world of Hollywood. Very eye-opening. And I'd say that section made me a better actor.

"Friendly Enemies" is so full of valuable information and illuminating insights that everyone, even people who are not in theater and film, will benefit from what is offered here by Delia Salvi.
It is a new, and much needed, deeply probing investigation covering every conceivable variation and possibility which might, could, or has occurred within the intricate and complicated working relationships between directors and actors. There is no other book like it. It is a welcome addition and learning tool for those just starting out, as well as old-timers like me. It is really a primer on how to get along with others, while getting the most out of yourself.
I enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone who can read!

High praise for Friendly Ememies. It instructs directors on how to communicate with actors by understanding the principles of acting and learning the actor's lexicon. It teaches directors how to bring out the actor's full potential while arriving at the director's intended vision. It's well organized and practical. Clearly written by someone with a lifetime of experience doing what they're writing about. It's the best director's guide to shaping actor's performances out there. I know, I've read them all.

LEE J. AMES began his career at Walt Disney Studios and taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and at Dowling College on Long Island. He directed his own advertising agency and has illustrated over 150 books, ranging from preschool picture books to postgraduate texts. I bought a book called Draw 50 Athletes. First I started with the easy things. Then I started working on harder things. Then I could draw anything. This book is good for kids who like drawing and sports. I think this book is good for kids and I recommned it.

Great book for drawing enthusiasts

This is probably one of the best in the "How to Draw series..." The pictures in this book are very easy to follow and results can be expected. The book seems to have a "thesis" if you will, the goal is to teach the patron how the muscles of the human body are to be drawn, and how they move in different actions and by the end of the book you can expect to be very good at it.

Be sure to do each drawing numerous times, you will see your improvement and get motivated for other drawings.

I recommend this book to everyone; even the most novice of artists can enjoy it.

Lots of fun for athletic artists

I liked drawing hockey, basketball, football, karate and fencing the best. It was easy when you followed the diagrams. Now I can draw them better without the book too. I liked learning how to draw all the sports, but I haven't got all of them yet. (Susie - age 8) The book provided good visual step by step drawings to follow, to show how the body parts can be added and changed. There was a lot of variety of sports depicted. It kept her attention for quite awhile! (Her mom)

A Great Book!

This book is a must-have for anyone with an interest in cartooning and humorous illustration in general. I had the first edition of this paperback (published in 1973)... that edition has a different cover and shows up in used bookstores occasionally. The chapters about Jack Davis and Mort Drucker were great... two very good Mad Magazine artists (along with Sergio Aragones and Al Jaffee). But my all-time favorite part of this book is the chapter that focuses on Bob Jones. Bob is a great funny animal (anthropomorphic animal) illustrator who created the cartoon Exxon Tiger (also known as the Esso Tiger), a famous icon in America and around the world. There are several great pictures of the Exxon tiger in this book including a model sheet with different expressions! This part of the book alone is great because it's so hard to find pictures of the cartoon tiger like unless you go to the Exxon web site or find old advertisements for Exxon/Esso with pictures of the tiger. In fact, you can go to the Exxon (or ExxonMobil) web site [...] and enter "tiger" in the search field for info from the company about the character. Exxon introduced its cartoon tiger in 1964 as the star of its 'Put a Tiger in Your Tank' ad campaign. (May be hard to find cartoon images now because of the Kelloggs vs. Exxon Lawsuit lost by Exxon in 2000). Anyway, other artists featured in this book are Federico Fellini, Paul Coker, Will Eisner, Jules Feiffer, Gerry Gersten, Johnny Hart, Donald Reilly, Norman Rockwell, Arnold Roth and Maurice Sendack.
