From Publishers Weekly
When his family moves, Matthew does not like their new neighborhood. Desperate for a way to get back to his old house, Matthew stumbles into the wing shop, where Lucy Featherman lends him three different pairs of wings. In one high-flying adventure after another, Matthew learns that home has more to do with the people who love you than anything else. Woodruff's gentle wit and sense of broad fantasy raise The Wing Shop head and shoulders above the norm for problem-solving books. Best of all, Gammell's shimmering watercolors, especially his panoramic paintings of Matthew in flight, are positively breathtaking. The slightly nerdy, bespectacled Matthew and carrot-topped Lucy--one shoe purple, the other green--are exuberant creations. Gammell's work here is even stronger, looser and more appealing than in his Caldecott-winning Song and Dance Man . Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3-- Matthew has recently moved and longs to return to his old neighborhood. One day he happens upon a windblown, red-haired child named Lucy Featherman, who outfits him, in turn, with wings from a seagull, a bat, a biplane, and finally, a bee. Eventually Matthew, like most questers, learns that he can't go home again. Gammell's colored-pencil renderings are--as expected--superb. His vibrant watercolor hues and whimsical characters are reminiscent of those found in his illustrations for Lyon's Come a Tide (Orchard Bks., 1990) and Ackerman's Song and Dance Man (Knopf, 1988). Each spread is filled with his unique, intoxicating treatment of light and shadow, of space (his skies are breathtaking), of flying--and falling. Wit and humor abound on every page; buildings are skewed appealingly; clouds, trees, and walls harbor subtle images that will intrigue readers of all ages. There's more than a bit of Icarus in this tale; a gull-winged Matthew plummets seaward while a wiley shark lurks below. Unfortunately, the text comes nowhere near Gammell's artistry. His work is airborne, while Woodruff's is consistently pedestrian and self-conscious. --Eve Larkin, Chicago Public Library

The superb illustrations attract the reader first. Then the story takes over. Reading the pictures turns out to be as rewarding as reading the story over and over again. From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6?This lively, colorful, cheerful book portrays the daily life of Felecita, 10, who lives on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, and chronicles her family's participation in the White Mountain Apache Tribes' annual rodeo. Felecita practices barrel racing and takes part in goat tying, her father rides a bull, and her mother and grandmother are actively involved behind the scenes. Woven into the girl's first-person narrative of year-long practice and preparation are overviews of Apache history, culture, the Sunrise Ceremony, and reservation life today. The book is well illustrated with numerous full-color photographs, and the graphic layout is notably good. What makes this title somewhat unusual is that it rises above the "nonfiction/sports" genre to focus on the intergenerational family that respects and supports Felecita's efforts. This book will appeal to those interested in rodeo, young female athletes, Native Americans, and to those looking for stories that show how a family can work together.?Colleen McDougall, Kayenta Boarding School, AZ

From Booklist
Gr. 3-5. The author/photographer team that profiled other Native American children and their cultures in Cherokee Summer (1993), Pueblo Storyteller (1991), and Totem Pole (1990) introduces Felicita, a White Mountain Apache girl. Written in the first person from Felicita's point of view, the text describes her home, her school, her family, her community, and the traditions of her people as practiced today. The last third of the book focuses on the rodeo held annually in her hometown, Whitewater, Arizona. The many full-color photographs that appear throughout make it easy for other children to see how Felicita's life is like and unlike their own. An appealing introduction to Apache life today. Review

“The reigns of Ferdinand and Isabella and their grandson, Charles V, were periods of dramatic and profound change for Spain in which national unity led quickly to a spectacular role in the affairs of Europe. . . . This meticulously documented biography is a useful contribution. The portrait of Cobos, the man, is well rounded and sound. There is a wealth of insights into the origins of the Spanish bureaucratic state whose foundation was laid during his lifetime and in which Francisco de los Cobos himself participated in a not insignificant fashion.”
—Speculum

“[This book] is an important one in the sadly undercultivated field of Spanish history, and probably no more excellent book could be written on this topic.”
—Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science

Book for teaching symmetry
By book lover
I've often found it hard to explain symmetry to kindergarteners, other than showing them a butterfly or doing the art project with paint....you know the one (drop some paint onto a sheet of paper, fold the paper in half and open - you have symmetry!). This book gives many other examples so that kids who "don't get it the first time" can see other things with symmetry.

Showing and telling
By M. Heiss
Loreen Leedy is able to present factual information with a graphic punch that gets the message across to visual learners. We have loved her other math concepts books (Measuring Penny, etc.) and her social studies books (Follow the Money, the 50 States, etc.)

In this book, she present symmetry in such a clear and memorable way -- it is rare to see a math concept book this well done. The book itself is very nice -- extra large illustrations on higher-quality paper.

This book is a keeper.

Fantastic Look at Symmetry
By M. Schemanski
Symmetry is all around us! Lorren Leedy shows symmetry's basics in this colorful picture book. Beginning with the basic line of symmetry she shows that items divided down the middle have a mirror image on each side.

Many animals like humans are symmetrical in their makeup.

A Line of symmetry can be vertical or horizontal. Much of the alphabet and even words like MOM and BOX are symmetrical.

She introduces rotational symmetry with propellers and wheels.

Found in artwork from long ago including portraits, patterns, furniture and buildings we have continued to utilize symmetry. Super picture book explaining the basic principle of symmetry to children in a fun and exciting way!

Includes activities in the back of the book to reinforce learning. My children loved looking at each picture and drawing the imaginary line of symmetry and then looking around their own surroundings for similar things. I think this was a great way to share a concept that is exciting but can get dulled down a bit in math books. Teaching them via a picture book is an awesome way to get it ingrained in their mind!

I received this book from the publisher Holiday House Book in exchange for an honest opinion.

The twenty-five original essays in this remarkable book constitute both a state of the art survey of Dante scholarship and a manifesto for new understandings of one of the world's great poets. The fruit of an historic conference called by the Dante Society of America, the essays confront a range of important questions. What theories, methods, and issues are unique to Dante scholarship? How are they changing? What is the essence of the distinctive American Dante tradition? Why-and how-do we read Dante in today's global, postmodern culture? From John Ahern on the first copies of the Commedia to Peter Hawkins and Rachel Jacoff on Dante after modernism, the essays shed brilliant new light on Dante's texts, his world, and what we make of his legacy. The contributors: John Ahern, H. Wayne Storey, Guglielmo Gorni, Teodolinda Barolini, Gary P. Cestaro, Lino Pertile, F. Regina Psaki, Steven Botterill, Giuseppe Mazzotta, Alison Cornish, Robert M. Durling, Manuele Gragnolati, Giuliana Carugati, Susan Noakes, Zygmunt Baranski, Christopher Kleinhenz, Ronald L. Martinez, Ronald Herzman, Amilcare Iannucci, Albert Russell Ascoli, Michelangelo Picone, Jessica Levenstein, David Wallace, Piero Boitani, Peter Hawkins, and Rachel Jacoff.

New wine from old casks.
By Joseph Murphy
Dante for the New Millennium consists of 25 essays written by academic Dante scholars; but, its editors did not set out to provide another "companion" or "reader's guide" to Dante but rather "to nudge the course of (Dante) scholarship... ." Each essay is thus an up-dating and review of the then current (approx. 2000AD) state of the essayist's understandings and researches. The resulting broad subject spectrum was proposed to invited essayists under one set of organizing labels, presented in the resulting seminar in a different organization and published in yet another organizing scheme. This flexibility of organization speaks volumes to the new learnings and perspectives made possible to readers who find their own path(s) through this volume. As an example, the following essays provide not only updates but also corrections to, or completions of, previous understandings. When taken together they give readers an opportunity to step more fully, and I believe more assuredly, into Dante's late-medieval understanding of the soul, body and salvation: Jessica Levenstein's The Re-Formulation of Marsyas in Paradiso 1; Manuele Gragnolati's From Plurality to (Near) Unicity of Forms: Embryology in Purgatorio 25; and, Robert M. Durling's The Body and the Flesh in the Purgatorio.

For this reader other highlights included:

Teodolinda Barolini's discovery of Dante's progressively developing view of women as independently acting moral agents in her review of three of Dante's pre-Commedia poems.

Lino Perile's interesting question: Where is marital fidelity found in the Commedia? Where is it rewarded? Answer: Nowhere, there is no room for earthly love in heaven.

Gary Cesraro's assertion that "we find something akin to (an) affirmation of "homosexuality" as part of nature in the poetry of Inferno 15-16". I found this thesis intriguing but, after study quite debatable and probably incorrect.

If you are a Dante hobbyist, as I am, this book can stir new excitements and explorations. Buy it!

Freedom Walkers: The Story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott (Bank Street College of Education Flora Stieglitz Straus Award (Awards)), by Russ

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus and give up her seat to a white man. This refusal to give up her dignity sparked the Montgomery bus boycott, a yearlong struggle, and a major victory in the civil rights movement. Source notes, map, bibliography, index.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 4-6–Freedman begins this outstanding history by reminding his audience that the injustices of racial segregation did not happen that long ago in the United States. Throughout the book, he gives accounts of how much coordination and sacrifice went into conducting the Montgomery Bus Boycott–far more than students are likely to imagine from the usual popular and oversimplified versions offered in textbooks and on television. There is a refreshing emphasis on depictions of regular people and forgotten local crusaders working together to make the boycott possible and triumphant, from inspiring descriptions of drivers getting up at dawn to take others to work to accounts of well-known civil-rights lawyers working to find the right plaintiff to challenge unjust laws. Freedman's prose style pulls readers into the narrative, integrating the actual recorded words and deeds of the people to tell the story. The high-quality, black-and-white photographs range from everyday scenes of African-American boycotters meeting, waiting for carpools, and protesting to representations of more famous figures, such as Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., etc. Extensive chapter notes, an annotated selected bibliography, and a thorough index round out the exemplary presentation. Pair this volume with Ann Bausum's Freedom Riders (National Geographic) and Nikki Giovanni's Rosa (Holt, both 2005) for a powerful introduction to the Civil Rights Movement.–Michael Santangelo, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

From Booklist
*Starred Review* As Freedman points out, the Montgomery Bus Boycott was a triumphant historical event, and there are numerous memoirs, articles, and scholarly works, for adults and for young readers, about the leaders and the ordinary heroes. In his signature clear prose, Freedman draws on the best of those personal stories and historical accounts to provide a dramatic overview of how the 381-day resistance to segregated buses spearheaded the civil rights movement. He brings close the experience of what it was like to be there, on the bus and on the street. With the eloquent accounts of the legendary heroes--Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King and more--are the stories of other important activists, including Jo Ann Robinson (president of the Women's Political Council) and teenager Claudette Colvin, as well as the lawyers and politicians. The photo-essay design is attractive and spacious. On every spread, readers will find beautifully reproduced black-and-white photos, including famous pictures as well as a few not often seen, including a picture of a leaflet urging boycott. Suggest Diane McWhorter's A Dream of Freedom (2004) and Ellen Levin's Freedom's Children (1993) to readers who will want to find out more. Freedman provides fully documented chapter notes and an excellent bibliographic essay. Hazel Rochman

On the march
By E. R. Bird
Sometimes I wonder about the process that your average author of non-fiction titles for children goes through. What, for example, makes an author, such as well-respected and brilliant Russell Freedman, decide to write about the Montgomery Bus Boycott? The man could really write about anything he wanted. He could do a book about The Black Panthers (since not a single non-fiction children's title exists on the subject) or the life of Boss Tweed or how Kalamazoo, Michigan became the Celery City, if he so desired. Instead he concentrates on the honestly inspiring boycott that sparked the Civil Rights Movement. When I heard this I felt at first that this particular subject had been "done". There are oodles of books on the topic. Why would Freedman feel he needed to add his two cents as well? Then I thought it through. Sure, there are lots of books on the boycott, but who do they praise? Nine times out of ten the real focus of the story is Rosa Parks. Once in a while it'll mention the other Civil Rights leaders here and there. The true heroes of the movement who've never really had their due, however, were the average joes. The black maids, elderly, children, and working folk who gave up their comfort, jobs, and who knows what all to support a cause that had never been won before. With "Freedom Walk", Freeman is giving credit where credit is due, to both the leaders and the people who made it happen.

It's a story of heroism on a local level. An understandable tale that doesn't lose any of its power over time. This is the story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott as it occurred from start to finish. But rather than concentrate on a single person or persons, Freeman gives credit and voice to some people you may not have heard from before. There was Jo Ann Robinson who lent her support. And there was Claudette Colvin, a young woman who refused to give up her seat on a bus before Rosa Parks did. And finally there were the people who participated in the boycott and their single-minded heroism. Freeman recounts all of this with an even hand and a great deal of intelligent editing.

Part of what I loved so much about this book was the sheer number of photographs and background information I found I'd never encountered elsewhere. I don't know where Freedman was able to find so many remarkable pictures (the Acknowledgements may offer some clues) but they are, quite frankly, part of the book's real lure. There's an image of a Coca-Cola machine where the "only" part of the words, "White Customers Only!" is written in the same font as the Coke logo above. Did Coke itself write these words on their machines? There were also mug shots of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. that I've never seen in a book before.

The title also debunked "facts" that I'd heard and believed incorrectly in the past. When I read Rosa Parks's autobiography, "I Am Rosa Parks", she mentions in the story that she was not the first black woman to refuse to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus. One Ms. Claudette Colvin was a potential case for challenging the segregation laws, but in the end was passed over because her out-of-wedlock pregnancy might have caused problems. As it turns out, Ms. Colvin wasn't used because she was "too young", had fought with the police. Her bun in the oven? "...it was later rumored that she was pregnant". Rumored! Russell Freedman: Rumor Debunker.

Freedman knows how to bring out details that kids might miss in other books about the boycott. He concentrates a bit more on Martin Luther King Jr. than I expected him to, but that just makes good sense. He mentions how risky it was for drivers to allow people to volunteer their cars, especially when it might be "driven by strangers". He talks about the mass meetings that would booster morale during the boycott (I always wondered how people kept their spirits up). And once bus integration was legalized, there were twice-weekly mass meetings training sessions on dealing non-violently with potential bus situations. It's funny that he never mentions that moment when the Montgomery city leaders met with some church leaders not associated with the leaders of the boycott who then declared that it was "over". But then, I'm sure a lot of details like this one had to be judiciously pruned.

Which brings me to Freedman's talent with brevity. I've been having a real problem lately with non-fiction books for kids that are so thick and packed to the gills with excess information that few children but the truly dedicated will ever be able to slog through them front to finish. This is part of the reason I love Freedman's books. Somehow or other, he knows exactly the length to make his titles. "Freedom March", covers all the pertinent information, is interesting and informative, and never comes across as a tome. It's so engaging that kids who might otherwise not be the least bit interested in this period of history may find themselves truly engaged.

To sum up, a moment in history with a happy ending is a rare and wonderful thing. And though I was incredulous that anyone, even Russell Freedman, could present the Montgomery Bus Boycott in such a way that it would be both interesting and new to young readers, somehow the author has managed beautifully. A fine piece of non-fiction and a bit of necessary reading.

Clear, consise, exciting, unforgettable
By GCMom
I'm reading this book aloud to my twelve year old daughter as we study the history of America. I wasn't sure if a book like this, full of facts and information and not much dialog, would hold her interest let alone mine. However at the end of Chapter Three "Rosa Parks", my daughter exclaimed, "Don't stop reading! I want to know what happened next!" It's hard to read only one chapter a day.

We are finding the story of the boycott to be fascinating! It angers me that white people were so ignorant and imposed such ridiculous rules on blacks. I also had no idea the lengths black people in Montgomery went to in order to secure a freedom that should have been theirs to begin with. I'm impressed with their non-violent means, their dedication to the cause, their untiring willingness to walk everywhere, and to help each other out with car pools.

The author uses language that both young and old can understand. Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr are central to the fight, but Russell Freedman includes lesser known names such as Jo Ann Robinson, Claudette Colvin, and E.D. Nixon. He also recognizes that some white people, such as Robert Graetz also took up the cause against bus segregation. Remarkable photographs of key events and key people are a bonus in this book.

This is an amazing story told in such an understandable way that one is not likely to forget it.

Richie's Picks: FREEDOM WALKERS
By N. S.
It has always confused me how someone managed to take that excellent photograph of Rosa Parks being fingerprinted after her arrest for failing to give up her seat on the bus. After all, nobody knew that she, on that particular day, would be on a crowded bus, would be commanded to give up her seat by a bus driver who wanted to make room for an oncoming white passenger, and would be arrested and fingerprinted. But I've certainly seen that particular photograph in plenty of places, both in print and online.

Among the whole range of new things I learned about the Montgomery Bus Boycott from reading FREEDOM WALKERS was that the photo to which I am referring was actually taken when, months later, Ms. Parks gave herself up for arrest the second time, in this case for breaking "an obscure 1921 state law prohibiting boycotts 'without just cause or legal excuse.' " (A mass series of arrests on this charge, including Rosa's and Martin's, was one of the tactics employed by the city government that, in cahoots with the bus company, was trying to break the Boycott.)

So, for me, another history mystery was solved thanks to the meticulous work of Russell Freedman, a guy whose name has long been synonymous both with top quality research and with an ability to consistently craft children's informational books that read as compelling stories rather than compilations of facts.

I often worry about how the current trend of teaching to tests and NCLB mandates results in teachers needing to "cover" so many things that students are growing up oblivious to, or know only superficially of many important issues. As is said, "Where is the learning in coverage?"

It was just in the past couple of weeks that I was astounded to encounter an entire classroom full of eighth graders where not a single kid knew anything about Linda Brown and the historic court case to which she was central. How are students to learn to get along with each other and grow up to forge world peace if they don't even know the relatively recent history of intolerance in America?

Of course, most kids have at least heard of Rosa Parks -- whether or not they are fans of Andre 3000 and Big Boi -- as there have long been a selection of kid-friendly picture books that focus on this American icon.

FREEDOM WALKERS goes far beyond the basic knowledge contained in those picture books to provide an accurate and articulate look at the people, the times, the politics, and the constitutional law issues that surrounded the Montgomery Bus Boycott. We learn, in fact, that Rosa Parks was not the first woman of color to be arrested for failing to give up a bus seat and then considered for a test case. That's another fact most kids don't know. Not even I understood how ugly it got immediately in Montgomery after the Supreme Court ruled that Alabama's bus segregation laws were unconstitutional and the boycott ended victoriously. Talk about terrorism:

"The White Citizens Council had predicted violence, and sure enough, violence erupted before Christmas. Early on the morning of December 23, two days after the boycott ended, a shotgun blast was fired into King's home, scaring everyone but causing no injuries. On Christmas Eve, a car pulled up to a bus stop where a fifteen year-old black girl was standing alone. Four or five men jumped out, beat her, and drove away. Then shotgun snipers began to fire at integrated buses, sending a pregnant woman to the hospital with bullet wounds in both legs...

"In January, bombs were set off at four black churches in Montgomery and at the homes of three ministers -- Ralph Abernathy, Robert Graetz, and Martin Luther King. The Bell Street and Mount Olive Baptist Churches were almost completely destroyed, and all three houses were severely damaged. Miraculously, no one was hurt."

Some of the photos included in the book will be familiar to many. Others I have never laid eyes on before. An engaging read filled with intriguing facts and photos, FREEDOM WALKERS is the latest outstanding book by a true master of informational writing for young people.

This guide explains how colour works in nature and how it can be manipulated to make expressive paintings. After covering the more scientific aspects of colour theory, the author offers information which analyzes a subject in terms of local, tonal, reflected and shadow colour. He demonstrates how to prepare a palette and how to obtain a wide colour range from specific mixtures. He defines and discusses colour harmonies, complements, and contrasts and shows the reader how to use cool and warm hues expressively, and how to juxtapose harmonious or discordant colours to produce different psychological and visual effects.

Parramon provides basic knowledge of how light breaks down into colors, in layman's terms, and then applies same to pigments. He then expands into contrasts, harmony, use and mis-use of black and white, a comprehensive discussion of artist colors, painting shadows and so on. Each topic is well addressed and supported visually.
Again, an excellent book which I'm delighted to have in my library, albeit covered with pastel and watercolor fingerprints.

Very clear and understandable!
By Tracy Marks
Although oriented toward oil painters, Jose Parramon's color theory book is enlightening and informative for anyone who wishes to understand color. He explains the theory very simply and clearly, illustrating concepts with pertinent color examples from oil painting.

As a photoshop instructor helping my students understand color both on screen (made with light) and in print, and as a photographer seeking to capture harmonious images, I found the book to be very helpful in clarifying my understanding of color. I was pleased also to learn about the color of shadows, and how colors cast their complementary color onto neighboring objects - knowledge that helps not only with painting but also in regard to touching up photographs.

Physics and Art by Reviewer
By Ruth Mckim
Physics is a science that deals with matter and energy. Physics includes light, prisms, luminosity and color. In his book, Color Theory, Jose Parramon discusses the primary colors of light and the primary colors of pigments. Parramon's primary pigment colors are correct according to the laws of physics. The harmonization, contrast and shadows of color are intriguing topics. The Uses and Abuses of Black and White are worthy of notation. Parramon uses prussian blue, a fugitive color that disappears when paintings are stored in the dark. The Impressionists substituted transparent cobalt blue to replace transparent prussian blue. This book has excellence. Use Parramon's Color Theory as a reference for further study.

More with Less: Disasters in an Era of Diminishing Resources (International Humanitarian Affairs (FUP))From Brand: Fordham University Pr

Natural and human-made disasters are increasing around the world. Hurricanes, typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis, droughts, and resultant famine, floods, and armed conflicts are constant reminders of the frailty of our human race. Global warming may cause whole island states to be submerged as the oceans rise. In the past these acute and recurring crises have been met by the international community responding to UN and media appeals. The economic collapse of nations is now a reality; some of those most affected had been traditional, generous donors to disaster relief operations. It is unlikely-probably impossible-that they will be able to continue to contribute overseas when their own domestic needs are unmet.

A recent New York Times front page report suggested that one of the few domestic issues to have bipartisan support was to cut the foreign aid budget. This book analyzes the global economic forecast and the United Nations pattern of philanthropy, provides a case study of how one nation with a tradition of giving will cope in the face of a marked reduction in flexible funds, and then provides thoughtful chapters on new approaches to disaster preparedness and disaster response. Among the contributors are the Director of UNESCO, the UN Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Assistance, the Secretary General's Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction, and fresh suggestions from three well-known global entrepreneurs.

All royalties from this book go to the training of humanitarian workers.

Dynamic Light and Shade, by Burne Hogarth

Mastery of light and shade - rendered with accuracy and expressive power - is the key to three-dimensional form in drawing and painting. Here is the first book on this essential subject, the product of years of study by one of the world's great teachers of drawing and an artist of international renown, Burne Hogarth.

Hogarth begins with the simplist kind of light and shade, showing how a dark silhouette on white paper can communicate form and space. He then shows how the silhouette is transformed into three dimensions with the addition of minimal light - the highlight.

Following these instructory chapters, Hogarth devotes a separate chapter to each of the given basic categories of light and shade: single-source light; double-source light; flat, diffused light; moonlight; and sculptural light. In these chapters Hogarth illustrates the effects of these different kinds of light on a variety of subjects and examines both natural and artificial light sources.

Moving on to more complex lighting effects, Hogarth explains spatial light - how light and shade can create a sense of "near and far"; environmental light - the effects of weather, time of day, and the changing of seasons; textural light - how light reveals the surface qualities of forms that range from rough stone to silk and satin draperies; transparent light - the effects passing through transparent materials like glass and water, and translucent substances like moving water or sailcloth; fragmentation light - the disrupted light we see in such subjects as fire, rain, and flying snow; radiant light - the intense light we see when we look into the light source itself, which may range from the sun to a candle flame; and finally the various kinds of expressive light invented by the artist - such as the symbolic and mystic light of religious art, or the paterns of light and shade that convey a mood or a psychological state.

Burne Hogarth illustrates every effect of light and shade with brilliant drawings in pencil, charcoal, carbon, pen and ink, and brush and ink, encouraging the reader to experiment with diverse drawing media.

Dynamic Light and Shade is an essential volume for everyone who draws and paints.

Kinda useless
By SingingDesigner
I'd hoped that the book provided lessons that I could use, but it's more by examples (his). I'm better with understanding the science behind it. Also, not abundant in providing a good range of different lighting situations.

Overall, I think this book will sit on the shelf.

Light & Shade in Art
By Jeremy Johnson
This book is good to illustrate the phenomena of light in a composition. It discusses the different kinds of light and their effect on the environment of the picture. Worth getting to use as reference material.

Good Reference Book, BUT....
By Jeremy Canaday
The writing style of the author in this book is the same as other books in his entire collection, so if you have read any of his previous books and dislike his teaching style, this book is not for you. The positive points of this book are that it teaches different situations and sources of light: diffractive light, chiaroscuro (1 point, 2 point, etc), sunlight, reflective, radiant light and so on. It taught me a few good points and has some pictures that I might reference if it comes down to it, but what it fails to teach is the Science behind dynamic light and shade. If you are considering this book and you already have applied studies of light and shade, it is a decent book that could give you new ideas to your work. However, if you are wanting a thorough in depth study of this subject, look elsewhere. Each chapter has about a 2 sentence explanation of the type of light it is covering, maybe a few good portrait examples for direction and then BAM! Pictures. More pictures. Even more pictures. Some of the pictures are just more about the pictures of the previous pictures and it gets very dull and counter-intuitive.. For the 15 chapters that this book has, it is good for maybe about 30 sentences and about 20 examples in pictures. Other than that, it is just blown out of proportion. This book is a great idea if you want to BROADEN your scope and try new things with light and shade, but should not be the 1st book of study. For the 150 something pages this book has, it could've been compressed into maybe 10 pages of pure important material for study and the rest is just overkill. I will not buy any future books from this author as I could probably find any information I needed that he explains on Wikipedia.
