He's my brother, and he's the best.

For 12 years, Marc poured his soul into this effort -- creating B&W portraits of the just-surviving and just-arriving blues greats. His objective was to support Willie Dixon's Blues Heaven Foundation, which, at the time, had the objective of supporting blues musicians who had not received their due, even though they had paid their dues. Yes, I'm biased toward my bro', but who can blame me? These photographs are stunning.

Grade 10 Up–Taking place in a cold, distant future where humans have evolved past the need for sleep (but where sleep is still sought after and even sold on the black market as a kind of drug), The Resonator tells of a man who seeks to find the strength to do extraordinary things. The titular object is actually a normal house cat that has the power to induce sleep in humans without drugs. The political atmosphere of Rollinss world is typical of much current sci-fi–a faceless corporation has control over the universe and most people are in its thrall. It uses humans as nonstop working machines, and sleep, although supposedly evolved out of the collective gene pool, is highly prized. The Resonator at times reads like a throwback to the American pulp sci-fi stories of the 1950s and 60s and its format is reminiscent of comic-book adaptations of Ray Bradburys work. Its an intelligent science-fiction story that will be appreciated by older comic-book readers as well as fans of hard sci-fi writers. The Making of a Graphic Novel, the other half of the book, offers 70 pages on everything from the story to the artwork and lettering. Nice Book Shows and Tells How-To

As a longtime fan of serious graphic storytelling, and an aspiring writer of a graphic novel script, I picked this up to learn the nuts and bolts of how long-form graphic stories are put together. The book is a great "how-to" concept -- the idea is that you read Rollins' 100-page sci-fi graphic novel "The Resonator", and then you flip the book and read about how he created it. You could certainly skip the graphic novel, but the "how-to" information is much richer and clearer if you don't.

In general, I tend to like either really simple and clean or really detailed and complex artwork, and Rollins is definitely in the latter camp. The book is a visual treat, as he painstakingly evokes the crumbling, jerry-rigged components of distant future space living. The story itself is a mixed salad of some very imaginative ideas along with some more familiar ones. It follows a uranium miner named Bronsen as he seeks to escape his stultifying life by using a illegal "resonator" to sleep and dream. In this future, mankind has evolved out of the need for sleep, and sleep becomes a kind of luxury good, strictly controlled by the megacorporation that governs all of mankind. The revelation as to what the resonator is is outstanding, and Bronsen's dream sequences are a brilliant contrast to his waking life. However, the "what is a dream and what is reality?" nature of the conclusion was a tired sci-fi theme long before "The Matrix" trilogy milked the final dregs from it. And stories in which a megacorp rises to rule over all humanity have always struck me as rather lazy. Ditto for the circular concept that these spaceships are kept running on a constant search for uranium, but the only use for the uranium is to power the ships. Nonetheless, on the whole, it's a graphic novel well worth one's time.

Flipping the book over, one gets about seventy pages of explanation, covering writing, preproduction, penciling, inking, and lettering. As a writer and not an artist, I was most interested in the writing section. Here, Rollins explains the story's evolution from writing workshop project to short story, to script. This is pretty straightforward "Fiction 101" stuff, with little I found new or useful. The one part I did like was his "Note on Character" (pages 18-19), in which he suggests that characters become quite interesting when there's a difference between what they think they're afraid of, and what they're really afraid of. I hadn't thought about that before, and his examples are quite revealing. The other sections are copiously illustrated with conceptual sketches, diagrams, and clear explanations of his artistic process. Overall, well worth reading if you're an artist thinking about embarking on the long form. Somewhat less useful if you're more focused on the writing side.

One of the best graphic novel stories I've ever read and one I've read repeatedly. Prentis Rollins proves his worth as a writer, artist, and creator whose work I want to see far, far, far more of. I highly recommend this book for those who embrace high level story telling and art, and also for those aspiring artists and writers out there for the flip book portion showing the creative process of how this work came to be.

Excellent How-To Book

Kudos to Prentis Rollins. First, for a fascinating if somewhat cerebral science fiction graphic novel, "The Resonator." Using his graphic novel, he shows by example the kind of depth that can be achieved via telling stories in the format of a graphic novel.

Second, flip the book over and he provides an extensive how-to text, "The Making of a Graphic Novel", in which he provides detailed information and tips on creating graphic novels, with lavish illustrations of pages at different stages, descriptions of tools, etc. Fascinating, as well as extremely useful for people interested in creating stories in this form, or for people who simply want more insight into the work that goes into the crafting of a graphic novel.

The inhabitants of this city are anthropomorphized animals who go about their daily activities despite the presence of Big Bunny, who is shown piecemeal-a foot, a hand, a tail- for the early sections of the book. The urban residents are depicted visiting a modern art museum, shopping, playing at a park, and even sunbathing on a roof. Each scene is jam-packed with vibrant details and activities. Readers are guided by simple sentences to search these pictures for parts of Big Bunny, such as large white ears poking out among rooftops and an eye spying on an art class through a skylight. At the end of the book, Big Bunny is revealed in his entirety. An author's note explains Big Bunny's inspiration. I love when I find books that are great for new readers. HERE IS BIG BUNNY uses 20 repeating words to create an amazing story about a city full of animals. The colors and vibrancy of the illustrations are such a fun way to journey through the story. There is so much to see to engage the reader. I love that it is an early reader, but has the feel of a full blown picture book. 5 stars

Inspiring, inspirational, and informational

As a woman who is about to embark on the exact same journey this book is all about, I found this text so encouraging. It has become my second Bible. Helena Lumme brings together a mix of inspiring women in tbe film industry. Their insight and experience in the film business is not only refreshingly honest, but inspirational as well. From the early days of film making to the present, women have been a major part of the moviemaking process. It makes me proud to not only be a woman but hopefully become a part of a wonderful legacy of a daring and courageous women. The information is all encompassing to the passion they each feel about not only their work but the journey they took to get there. Mika Manninen photography not only puts a face on most of these unseen women but also captures their very soul in the lens. My heartfelt thanks go to not only Lumme but the women she interviewed for this piece.

Originally found this in the library, but it's the kind of book one should OWN

I've always been interested in theatre and movies, but when I was a kid and even in my mid-thirties, even though I've published books, getting involved in movies seemed like suddenly wanting to become President of the United States. So I bought this book and refer back to it whenever aspects of producing an indie film seem daunting. This book's beautiful and great. GIRL DIRECTOR is another fun book (although originally for little girls). So you should buy this book if you can afford such a beautiful hard cover photograph book, and support the authors so publishers know we're out here and interested.

An invaluable 'how-to' book for PA's to Producers

As a woman in film school at USC, I craved books like this. Usually what I found was dry text giving me a history lesson, accompanied by some poorly reproduced photos. I opened Great Women of Film and discovered something completely different. This is a book that wants to inspire its readers, through its variety of subjects, presented in bold and evocative portraits, with interviews chock full of realistic advice and lessons learned. There are no stories of nepotism or unearned breaks, each of these women took risks, worked hard and fearlessly dedicated themselves to their crafts. These are woman in front of and behind the camera, directors, writers, set decorators, producers, cinematographers, and special effects artists. As I read, I wished each woman could be my mentor, then I realized that's exactly what this book offers--the advice, wisdom, and can-do encouragement of accomplished women who want to see more of us out there with them. The film industry may still be a male-dominated world, but I would pay double to see a movie whose crew was made up solely of these Great Women of Film. Oh, and the book concludes with an index of resources, from schools to non-profits to guilds and unions that exist to help women in film.

Fun look at cutting edge London flats

This is an enjoyable trip through some of London's most interesting living spaces, from apartments to whole houses. The emphasis throughout is on more cutting edge spaces, either modernist or traditionalist reinterpreted in some way. Many of the owners are famous, such as Gilbert and George. Like many interior design books, it offers a look at the Creative Class at home. The author entirely avoids chintz and preciousness. The pictures are of excellent quality, as is the layout. I admit there are some rather uncomfortable looking bathrooms that make me grateful to be an American, but there is that comfortable thrill of looking at something and not having to live in it. For those interested in London and/or in interior decoration, this is a book well worth owning.

If you really want to understand the "why" behind interior design, this is the book for you. The book is written in an easy, informative style and Cecil goes out of her way to make it understandable for the average person. Even after working for her for several years, I learned sooo much from this book that its incredible. Cecil's teachning background is readily apparent and she shares the secret of her personal design process wholeheartedly!

Anyone who wants to create their own one-of-a-kind interior design, is contemplating a career in interior design, or who is generally interested in interior design will find this book inspirational. Humorous anecdoes, professional wisdom, and the life lessons of a celebrated interior designer, all rolled into a teaching text on interior design. Highly, highly recommended!

Supreme Court Justice Black (1886-1971), a noted civil libertarian and populist, is done justice in this first comprehensive biography, written with the cooperation of his family. Newman, a former research scholar at New York University School of Law, recreates Black's youth in isolated Clay County, Ala., his move into law and politics in Birmingham and his election to the U.S. Senate in 1926. FDR's search for a liberal justice led him to appoint Black in 1937. On the Court, Black grew into a staunch defender of the Bill of Rights and, as one of his clerks wrote, a judge concerned most with "the human being involved." He battled with order-loving rival Felix Frankfurter to fight McCarthy-era speech restrictions and, as the 1960s began, became the country's foremost First Amendment absolutist. In 1963, he wrote the landmark right-to-counsel Gideon opinion, but, as the Warren Court continued its revolution, Black's "reformist zeal had sharply abated." Though Newman clearly admires his subject and effectively limns Black's private life, he also tracks the justice's evasions regarding his membership in the Ku Klux Klan as a young man, notes the senator's "excess zeal" as an investigator and scores his illiberal opinion regarding the World War II internment of Japanese-Americans.

Supreme Court Associate Justice Hugo Black is described by the author as controversial and influential: controversial for an earlier Ku Klux Klan membership; influential for his lasting impact on the law. Best known for an absolutist belief in the Bill of Rights as a guarantee of civil liberties, Black helped define modern American constitutional law. Newman almost lovingly delves into the private and public life of this complex man who characterized himself as merely a "country fellow." While there are other prominent works on Black, most, like Howard Ball and Phillip J. Cooper's Of Power and Right (Oxford Univ. Pr., 1992), focus on Black's often stormy relationships with Court colleagues like William O. Douglas and Felix Frankfurter. Black's memoirs, Mr. Justice and Mrs. Black (LJ 3/1/86), provided a first look at the private man. Now, Newman has brought both sides together in an admirable biography. If there is any real reservation, it is only that Hugo Black will compete for the reader's time and attention with Gerhard Gunther's Learned Hand (LJ 5/1/94). But we can only feel satisfied with two excellent judicial biographies appearing in the same year. Highly recommended.

A majestic biography of the man who shed his Ku Klux Klan robes to become one of the most influential and liberal justices in Supreme Court history. Newman (Law/New York Univ.) spent 26 years researching Black's life, and the result is a massive work of uncommon depth and grace. In subtle, luminous prose, he describes Black's merchant-class childhood in Clay County, Ala., haunted by his drunkard father; his prosperous years as ``Ego'' Black, the personal-injury lawyer whose courtroom oratory and theatrical cross-examination style brought him statewide fame and a position in the Klan; his two terms as Alabama's senator, during which he transformed himself from an intolerant populist into a power-brokering New Dealer, well-versed in ancient classics and modern politics; and his 34 years on the Supreme Court, championing the Bill of Rights and judicial restraint. Newman plainly reveres his subject, but he is clear-eyed and sometimes critical: He presents Black's various self- contradictory rationalizations for having served as KKK ``Kladd'' (whose job it is to induct new members into the Invisible Empire), then notes that Black ``never really grasped, or could admit, the genuine outrage that the Klan caused, and not only among Catholics, Jews and Negroes.'' Newman also criticizes Black's failure to grasp ``the profound meaning gathered within the Fourth Amendment's words'' (forbidding unreasonable searches and seizures). But he celebrates and illuminates the rest of the enormous body of Black's jurisprudence, which includes the ideas that the Bill of Rights applies in its entirety to the states and that the First Amendment right of free speech is ``absolute.'' The author is equally astute in analyzing Black's complex relationships with his depressive first wife, Josephine, the brilliant but libertine Justice William O. This should be your first book about the Supreme Court

I had a great Constitutional law professor while I was in law school. He had all these stories of the Supreme Court behind the scenes, and it brought the law to life. So I started to look around for Supreme Court biographies. About 6 years later, I'm still reading them. This is the best I have come across. Love him or hate him, Hugo Black is one of the 10 most important Justices in history, most would agree. More than that--he had a strong, controversial, well-thought-out point of view about the law, though he was friends with many people who absolutely disagreed with him. He is interesting to conservatives and liberals alike and he challenges us to use our brains because he doesn't fit neatly into modern ideas of what it is to be Republican or Democrat. For instance, he's known as a "judicial activist," but he was a textualist (like Scalia). He's also something of an original intent guy (though he doesn't ignore the Amendments like the 14th Amendment that were passed long after the "founding fathers" died). He didn't believe a constitutional right to privacy--abortion, gay rights, right to die0--but was one of the leaders in applying the Bill of Rights to the states, not just the federal government. On the other hand, he wrote Korematsu, the opinion that allowed the government to put Japanese-Americans into internment camps during the war years. Along with Justice Douglas, he was the most vigorous protector of the First Amendment free speech rights that the Court has ever had. He was banned by the Alabama legislature from being buried in Alabama, his home state, because of his assistance in desegregaing the nation and providing equal protection to African Americans (which is interesting in light of his KKK past). Thus, if you're a fan of the liberal Warren Court era OR a fan of Scalia and Thomas's modern/throwback textualist and originalist ideas, there is much for you to learn. That aside, Hugo's story was fascinating. Other reviewers have remarked on his KKK and New Deal Senator past. He was also one of the longest sitting Justices---30 years or so. This book is an easy read and you'll get a feel for Hugo's PERSONALITY, not just his actions. (I think of him as "Hugo" rather than Justice Black because I think of him as a friend...and that's due to this book).

From KKK member to the Supreme Court: A fascinating story

What more can you say to attract a reader than this book is the story of a southern lawyer who begins as a member of the Ku Klax Klan in Alabama and ends his career as one of the most respected members of the United States Supreme Court. WOW! The truth IS stranger than fiction.
This book was written by one of Justice Black's former law clerks on the Court. It is well-written and gives great insight into the man, his methods, convictions, passions, and flaws.
Highly recommended for those who are fans of the Court's jurisprudence during the era of expanding protection of individual rights.

What's the Big Idea? Follows in the style of Joyce Raimondo's other books in this series. I teach art education on a college level and use her books as a way to help my students understand that when you are creating art with children it is not just the activity or experience of making art that is fundamental. It is the balance that comes from discussions of looking at art that provides open ended thinking and questioning that prepares students to be creative. It is a process that encourages risk taking and validates expression in art.

Big bang for little buck

The book is great fun. Every book in this series are absolute winners. If you are looking for something to try as a parent or teacher, with kids, this is a good book for you. You don't have to know anything about art to create awesome stuff. Simple directions, simple materials, and each project comes with a quick bit of background (kid-friendly, ie, short AND interesting)to lead you on your way. Helps kids understand why artists did things the way they did and open ended enough to make everyone feel successful.
