This collection of short newspaper articles gives a peek into a bygone era. Mr. Berger's interviews of his subjects give a revealing view of what in was like to live in New York from the mouths of people who lived it. A worthwhile read for anyone who loves to hear the stories of old-timmers and loves early to mid 20th century New York city; not just those who live there.

Very Basic but a good place to begin

The title says it all for this book. The author skillfully takes the reader on a step-by-step tour of basic sketching techniques. Throughout the book each project has detailed illustrations showing how the sketches should look as the reader follows along. It covers several drawing media including pencils, charcoal, pastel pencils, water soluble colored pencils, etc. The instruction covers basic sketching, shading, and composition techniques. Sketching subjects in the lessons include fruits, vegetables, natural forms, plants, flowers, trees, skies, water, landscapes, animals, people, buildings, people and the seaside. If you have had no art training and don't know where to begin or just want to try your hand at sketching then this is an excellent place to start.

Sketching as a Hobby

I decided to do some sketching as a hobby. This book was perfecto. It is easy to understand and explains basic methods used. Simmonds explains exactly which parts of your subject to focus on and where to start. It also gives a good list of materials to use but simple pencils are all you need. I love this book because it gets me excited about sketching.

Must have for beginners!!

I absolutely love this book!! Being a beginner wanting to learn basics about drawing everything from landscapes to fruit the book lets you explore the different methods and mediums. It's also a complete confidence builder and I was excited to run out a get a sketch book (which she encourages) to learn to become better. There is something in here for everyone and she makes it so easy to follow her step-by-step examples. You can choose your favorite medium to use, from charcoal to pastel pencils instead of being tied the medium she used in her examples, this is also a great way to see the differences between the textures of each medium. I borrowed this book from the library but I intend to purchase it to refer to as a reference! A must have for beginners and a great source for finding your favorite medium!

Excellent Sculpture Resource

Clearly describes a wide range of sculptural terms, techniques and materials. Enteries are concise yet are often in-depth providing a clear understanding of complex or obscure subjects in this field of art. For the non-art school sculptor (like myself) or the new art student, it is invaluable reference book. Well-written with a personal and occassionally witty voice, I found it easy to read it from front to back. Pictures and diagrams instructive and relevant although more would be helpful for a few enteries to assist in understanding the subject in question. Well-bound and sturdy book for a paperback. A must-have for a student of sculpture.

Kelly playfully delineates how they eat: "You may not be able to taste a cupcake by standing on it, but a butterfly can!" She characterizes the migration of monarchs and explains the process of metamorphosis by including a dramatic comparison—a monarch caterpillar is 2700 times its original weight in two weeks. "If a newborn baby gained weight that fast, it would weigh eight tons. That's as big as two full-grown rhinos!" The text curves up and down, suggesting the fluttering movement of butterflies. Specific creatures are identified, although the delicate watercolor, gouache, and pen-and-ink artwork is somewhat muted and the colors are not quite as vibrant as one might expect. Love this book!

We have many books on nature for our 2 young children, but this book about caterpillars and butterflies is our favorite. The text is full of fun, and details (many facts even a nature lover like myself didn't know). My kids ask for us to read this book over and over. Highly recommended.

Great book about butterflies and also suitable for younger readers

This is a beautifully-illustrated book about butterflies and their cycle of life. It provides a lot of details about butterflies, including the migration of the Monarch butterflies, the different types (buckeye, monarch, Indian Moon, swallowtail, regal greatstreak, etc). The illustrations are gorgeous, giving the pictures an almost life-like appearance, as though the butterflies would take flight out of the pages of the book at any given moment! Older children, aged 9-12 will delight not only in the pictures but also the facts about the metamorphosis etc, but young children like my preschooler will take a lot of pleasure in browsing through the vivid illustrations (and a parent can easily condense the facts for a younger child). Highly recommended!

Fun and fact-filled

Fun attractive pages loaded with pretty paintings of all types of butterflies and their babies, sentences rolling through with interesting tidbits, all should keep both children and adults glued to this delightful book. Loved the cute fuzzy-headed caterpillars hatching and the odd bit about caterpillars that can shoot their frass up to three feet! Learning is fun. See also Where Butterflies Grow (Picture Puffins)

Fusion Pirates (Plunder the style, get this book)

I own quite a few of Christopher Hart's drawing books and this is the one I have been hoping he would produce. If you have ever wanted to draw like Joe (Mad) Madureira of Battle Chasers fame, the man who is the original fusion genius, this is the book that will provide the instruction necessary to fuse the incredible art of Japanese Manga with the dynamic Marvel look of in your face action in the same way Joe did when he created the dark and sexy Monika.
Drawing the art work in comic books takes a special talent since a person must know what people look like, and then take that picture and distort it till it jumps off the page and into the readers imagination; an excellent example of this is Khary Randolph's "WOW!" on page 84. If you haven't purchased a Christopher Hart book, then you may not be aware that he includes the work of quite a few artists in his pages thereby exposing us to different styles and the methods of respective artists who might draw in a way that appeals to quite a number of learning styles. In addition to Christopher Hart's work in this book you will learn from incredible artists such as: Roger Cruz (superhero perfection); Diogo Saito (leaning toward the Manga); Steven Segovia (this guy is amazing, he is the embodiment of fusion); and several more. In addition Christopher Hart has had Steven Segovia break down the drawing process into several steps: starting with the mannequin stick form in front, ¾, side, and rear view, Steve progresses to fleshing out the anatomy. Then adds the clothes and features. This is done with two very different males and one Monika style female. Throughout the process Steve explains why he is drawing certain lines and how they help in keeping the artwork true to the character that is being created.
If you have visited digitalwebbing.com the hub for people working in the comic book industry, the one thing you may have noticed is that there are an incredible number of people who have ideas and stories, all they need is an artist. The story is everything and yet without someone who can draw like Roger Cruz... I am hoping that in studying and learning from Christopher Hart's books my drawings both in speed and quality will improve to the point that I am proud of the pages I create; I am getting there... And then I am going to [...] to get my work published.

Good book

This is the better of the Hart books: good solid information into a genre of comics/animation full of mis-conceptions.

I personally think Fusion style marries the best of these two styles. Anyone wanted to create a comic would be wise to adopt THIS style and make it your own.

As with most of the Chris Hart books the sections on who how construct panels and tell stories w/ pictures is EXTREME helpful.

I found this book is slick, supportive, extremely enjoyable and helpful as well.

The book offers the ultimate path of relating manga style to my favorite traditional American cartoon styles creating a FUSION. As a recreational artist, I was able to apply many tips & tricks offered in this book to my daily work. Filled with colorful as well as B&W examples, covering 360 degree views, both horizontally and vertically; applying clothing styles, accessories to assemble a character, light, shadows, moods & attitudes. Highly recommended.

Along with Majorie O'Rourke Boyle's LOYOLA'S ACTS: THE RHETORIC OF THE SELF this is a wonderful study of Loyola by a Jesuit using Loyola's own self examination on himself in the process shows the real structure and point of the ACTA. As scholarship, it challenges all standard run of the mill scholarly techniques, and, in itself, makes a strong philosophical statement worked out in Loyola's life, the great work of scholars like Boyle & John W. O'Malley, and the author's own experience both of scholarly discipline and in existential commitment. As such IT IS A PRIME TEXT for anyone whatsoever that studies philosophy and theology seriously, and anyone who has any real interest in the psychology of a real thinking human being.

I am very pleased with the book. It is easy to follow and exciting to work through. The illustrations are clear I can duplicate them with little effort. It is an excellent workbook for learning the figure and using different media in the process.

Excellent resource

I highly recommend "Dollhouse Decor: Creating Soft Furnishings in 1/12 Scale" to anyone interested in furnishing dollhouses or just at looking at pictures of how others have furnished theirs. The Forder's book is arranged by periods of style, and goes into a bit of detail about what makes each period's style unique. The projects are designed for all skill levels, from those who work best with a bit of glue and a pair of scissors, to those who enjoy doing their own weaving. Each project is preceded by a symbol to let the reader know the level of skill required. Yet regardless of the level, all the projects are well explained.
Equally enjoyable is the photography. There are none of the grainy pictures that are so annoying in some dollhouse books. Each photograph is large and clear, and shows the meticulous level of detail that the Forders put into their work.

Westley's volume encompasses the many exciting and imaginative developments in relief printmaking in recent years. She describes both traditional and progressive modes of practice and illustrates the growing crossover between Eastern and Western printmaking. Both books are recommended.

...but NOT for collagraphy beginners

Was looking for updated info re collagraphy techniques for newbies and water-based and acrylic inks for same. Gleaned enough from older books to know that collagraphy is relatively easy for beginners because no expensive printmaking press was required to apply pressure, only simple household utensils were quite adequate (and often preferable).
This book devotes seven pages to collagraphy and only mentions an oil-based ink/mechanical press method of producing collagraphic prints. Very disappointing, especially since many professional quality collagraphs today are printed using the manual, "pressless" technique.
If you'd like to begin a more simple printmaking experience by making monoprints, or either wood or linoleum block prints, or perhaps screenprints, then you're in luck. The book is full of clear illustrations, instructions and color repros of finished prints. The other "press-dependent" printmaking methods are well covered here as well. Not heavy on details, but rock-solid on the basics that a beginner needs.
Thus, my rating is: 1 star for collagraphy beginners, and 5 stars for everyone else. 3 stars splits the difference.

This book is about representations of sodomy. While most of the texts it considers are literary-works by Shakespeare, Marlowe, Spenser, among others-it is framed by political considerations, notably the 1986 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Bowers v. Hardwick that denied any constitutional act to private consensual acts that the court termed 'homosexual sodomy' and the rhetoric attaching sodomy to Saddam Hussein in the initial U.S. war in Iraq.The book takes as axiomatic Foucault's description of sodomy as 'that utterly confused category.' Without collapsing questions of historical difference, it works to articulate relations between the early modern period and our own, between a time before the homo/heterosexual divide and the modern regimes that assume it. In this book, sodometries (a Renaissance word for 'sodomy' chosen for its nonce-word suggestiveness) are sites of complications around definitions of sex and gender. Because 'sodomy' is not a term capable of singular definition, representations of sodomy are never direct. Sodomy exists only relationally.Three social domains for textual production are explored in this book: the sixteenth-century English court as the location of high literariness; the theater, especially as a site for controversy around cross-dressing; the New World as the place where the slaughter of native populations (and, in New England, of Englishmen as well) was carried out in the name of ridding the hemisphere of sodomites. These lethal impulses are read as foundational for a U.S. imaginary still operative in many powerful quarters.The analyses of literary texts engage the most advanced work in early modern literary criticism (that done by feminist and New Historicist critics) and proposes a queer perspective that necessarily complicates and enriches such inquiries. Besides offering detailed readings of literary texts not often read in terms of the history of sexuality (Shakespeare's history plays, for example), the book also examines narratives of the conquest and colonization of the Americas.
