The Two-Headed Household is an ethnographic account of gender relations and intrahousehold decisionmaking as well as a policy-oriented study of gender and development in the indigenous Andean community of Chanchalo, Ecuador.   Hamilton’s main argument is that the households in these farming communities are “two-headed.”  Men and women participate equally in agricultural production and management, in household decisionmaking, and share in the reproductive tasks of child care, food preparation, and other chores.
   
Based on qualitative fieldwork and regional household survey data, this book investigates the effect on women's lives of gender bias in agricultural development programs and labor and commodities markets. Despite household economic reliance on these programs and markets, there is extraordinary evidence of social and economic gender equality.  Traditional Andean kinship structures enable women and men to enter marriage as materially equal partners. 
   
As seen in case studies of five women and their families, the author continually encounters joint decisionmaking and shared household and agricultural responsibilities.  In fact, it often seems that women have the final say in many decisions.  There is the belief that a dynamic balance of power between male and female heads provides an impetus toward mutually desired economic and social goals.  Despite the strong influence of the patriarchal power of the hacienda system, Andean gender ideology accords women and men equal measures of physical, mental, and emotional fortitude.  The belief that maintaining traditional forms of economic collaboration helped them survive on the hacienda was reinforced under the economic and political domination of the patriarchal systems of the landed elite, church, and state. 
   
Today, these people are proud of their strong women, strong families, and community solidarity which they believe distinguishes them from  Ecuadorean and American societies.  Hamilton suggests that women in developing countries should not be viewed as simply, or even inevitably, victims of gender-biased structural or cultural institutions.  They may resist male bias, perhaps even with the support of local-level institutions.  The Two-Headed Household demonstrates that analysis of gender relations should focus on forms of cooperation among women and men, as well as on forms of conflict, and will be of interest to scholars and students in anthropology, gender and development, and Latin American Studies.

Equally dramatic was the sweeping deindustrialization of Pittsburgh in the 1980s, when the collapse of the steel industry brought down the smokestacks, leaving vast tracks of brownfields and riverfront. Today Pittsburgh faces unprecedented opportunities to reverse the environmental degradation of its history.

In Devastation and Renewal, scholars of the urban environment post questions that both complicate and enrich this story. Working from deep archival research, they ask not only what happened to Pittsburgh's environment, but why. What forces-economic, political, and cultural-were at work? In exploring the disturbing history of pollution in Pittsburgh, they consider not only the sooty skies, but also the poisoned rivers and creeks, the mined hills, and scarred land. Who profited and who paid for such “progress”? How did the environment Pittsburghers live in come to be, and how it can be managed for the future?

In a provocative concluding essay, Samuel P. Hays explores Pittsburgh's “environmental culture,” the attitudes and institutions that interpret a city's story and work to create change. Essential reading for Pittsburghers, highly recommended for environmentalists nationwide

This book puts the environment of Pittsburgh and the environmental movement of the region into perspective. The city prides itself on its "green revolution" but much of that pride is based on hearsay and the perceived common knowledge. Anyone interested in environmental and civic issues in the Pittsburgh region should read this book and get the real story. It is fine to be proud of Pittsburgh's apparent accomplishments, but it is important to understand how they came to be.

This book is relevant to the growing issues surrounding the Marcellus Shale in the region. Since the book was published in 2003, Pittsburgh has seen a growth in environmental activism surrounding the contentious issues of drilling and hydraulic fracturing, These pose real threats to the environment and quality of life in western Pennsylvania. A deeper understanding of the history of resource exploitation and waste disposal around Pittsburgh will greatly benefit those concerned with newer issues surrounding hydraulic fracturing.

It is a scholarly work and well referenced with informative end-notes. These do not interrupt the flow of reading. Anyone can read and draw from the book the level of information they desire. The high school student activist to professional academic will find the book useful and accessible.

Although it is composed of edited chapters, editing is excellent and every chapter reads well. Chapters are not redundant and appropriately cite other chapters in the book. Unlike many edited volumes, this one reads well in a consistent voice; there is no break between chapters where one needs to re-group before continuing. You can sit down and smoothly read this beginning to end as a single narrative.

But having multiple authors brings a broader spectrum of information and perspective. They really dig into the history of extractive and polluting industries in the region drawing on sometimes obscure and deep archival sources. The authors have thoroughly researched their topics and are not simply repeating "the usual story" about renewal we've grown up on in Pittsburgh. The authors illuminate the often hidden roles of government, civic organizations, and individuals in abetting, restraining or ameliorating the extraordinary devastation that is what makes Pittsburgh what it is. This history is arguably even more important than the history of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The book is an excellent case study that has relevance far beyond Pittsburgh. Anyone involved in environmental issues, particularly in an urban setting or dealing with industrial pollution, should find this a very useful book. It would make superb "required reading" for undergraduate or graduate level courses in environmental sciences. I hope it has inspired similar reviews and syntheses in other cities, all of which have unique foundations to their current environmental issues. Moreover, the book should be read by anyone interested in the history of Pittsburgh or concerned with civic issues in the city, even if not concerned with environmental issues. Quite likely after reading it, such people will become much more concerned with Pittsburgh's still tenuous environmental situation.

In France today, philosophy--phenomenology in particular--finds itself in a paradoxical relation to theology. Some debate a "theological turn." Others disavow theological arguments as if such arguments would tarnish their philosophical integrity, while nevertheless carrying out theology in other venues. In Crossing the Rubicon, Emmanuel Falque seeks to end this face-off. Convinced that "the more one theologizes, the better one philosophizes," he proposes a counterblow by theology against phenomenology. Instead of another philosophy of "the threshold" or "the leap"--and through a retrospective and forward-looking examination of his own method--he argues that an encounter between the two disciplines will reveal their mutual fruitfulness and their true distinctive borders. Falque shows that he has made the crossing between philosophy and theology and back again with audacity and perhaps a little recklessness, knowing full well that no one thinks without exposing himself to risk.

The large print is inviting and the black-and-white cartoons add to the light tone. Amato appeals to the funny bone without being quite as gross as the "Captain Underpants" series (Scholastic). The games they create have names like Snarf Attack, Underfoodle, the Naked Mole-Rat Game, and the Frying Pan Game. The objective of Snarf Attack is to make an opponent laugh so hard at dinner that milk comes out of his or her nose. The objective of Underfoodle is to get as many pairs of underwear as possible on your head in thirty seconds. The Riot brothers also impart their homegrown juvenile wisdom to readers with sayings like "All you need is a butt to put underpants on your butt, but it takes a brain to put underpants on your head." 1. Book one=The Riot Brothers Capture a Crook

In book one its starts out with Wilbur and Orville eating at the dinner table while playing snarf attack. Snarf attack is a game they made up where one player attempts to get the other to laugh so hard during dinner that milk comes out of his nose. While eating dinner they decide they want to do something adventurous. They decide they're going to capture a robber. They ask their mom to take them to the bank. She said, "Why do you want to go to the bank?" They say, "To put in money." But they had no money. So they gave "annoying lessons" to make money. At school they didn't charge people for their first lesson but after thatthey charged twenty-five cents. They made $19.50. But they get caught and had to go to the principal's office which happens to be their mom's office. The principal makes them give her the money and clean the halls after school. On the way home their mom had to stop at the bank. In the bank they saw a guy who looked like he might be a robber. So they yelled "thief" but he was just pulling out his checkbook. But the lady in front of him was a thief. The teller gave her five hundred dollars when the teller should have given her only five dollars. the woman yelled out, "I confess, I confess." They didn't get an award or anything though besides a lollipops. When they got home they had to eat, wash the dishes, and then go to bed. When they went to bed they played Underfoodle, which is a game where you have thirty seconds to put the most amount of underwear on your head but at the same time you have to try to take underwear off the other person's head.

2.Book two= The Riot Brothers Find a Hidden Treasure.

It started off with the Riot brothers playing the mole rat game. In the mole rat game you have to finish a cracker with only a certain amount of bites. But then they had to go get the mail for their mom. They got a letter saying that Mr. Hally died 12 years ago. Orville wondered if Mr. Hally left behind a treasure. So they tried their basement but their mom told they had to clean up the basement. They try to make a machine that will clean for them and they called it the Super Swift Stuff Lifter. But it shoved everything off their mom's desk. They said they couldn't do anymore cleaning because they ran out of dust cloths. Their mom said there were more in the closet. They dropped their flashlight and it was pointing toward a box. They thought it was Mr. Hally's treasure but the box needed a key. They think they should take it to a hardware store to see if they have any keys for it. Once they finished cleaning they walked to the hardware store because it was only three blocks away. At the hardware store Bob opened the box for them. Inside the box were two blue socks, two blue hats, two wristbands, and two envelopes. It was their baby box and in the envelopes was $500 for their saving bonds and that was their treasure.

3.Book three=The Riot Brothers Overthrow a King

It starts off with the Riot brothers playing the frying pan game which is where you pretend you are a food in a frying pan and the person has to guess what kind of food you are. They decide to do a mission where they overthrow a king. They decide that they're both going to be king brothers. But they can't do it at school so they're planning on making the ground white since their mom is the principal. So they think if they tape white pieces of paper to the window their mom would think it would have snowed. Their mom felt for it and she cancelled school. So to overthrow a king they're going to make a catapult with a chair on the end. They called the catapult the flinger. When they used the flinger Orville flew straight in to Wilbur. When their mom walks down to the basement she wonders what's the catapult for but they say for snowballs so their mom wants to try it out but there is no snow so they pretend they are outside. But when they get outside it really did snow. When they go outside everyone is already there and they get nailed in the head with a snowball that Goliath threw. They put snowballs in the throne and hit Goliath. They thought they really did overthrow a king when Goliath left. Then some person drove by and said I would like to a photo of you in the newspaper.

So to overthrow a king they're going to make a catapult with a chair on the end. They called the catapult the flinger. When they used the flinger Orville flew straight in to Wilbur. When their mom walks down to the basement she wonders what's the catapult for but they say for snowballs so their mom wants to try it out but there is no snow so they pretend they are outside. But when they get outside it really did snow. When they go outside everyone is already there and they get nailed in the head with a snowball that Goliath threw. They put snowballs in the throne and hit Goliath. They thought they really did overthrow a king when Goliath left. Then some person drove by and said I would like to a photo of you in the newspaper.

Mary Amato masters three different genres in one book: fantasy, philosophy and family! This work captures the humor, imagination and even love that two brothers are capable of, all in words and a style that are perfect match for the pre-teen set. And Amato does it without resorting to the kind of bathroom humor that some other books for this age group use. The only problem will be that your children might not be able to put it down at bedtime.

David Nathan's life changed as an English teenager in the '60s. The agent of that shift? Records by black American singers such as Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, and Nina Simone. Soon he was the head of Simone's British fan club, and in short order, became a journalist with growing access to his heroines. Over the ensuing years, Amazon.com and Billboard contributor Nathan has had Franklin bake him a peach cobbler, stood under the thrown shade of everyone from Esther Phillips to Anita Baker, and even had Miss Ross ask him to call her "Diana." The Soulful Divas captures Nathan's obsession with his favorites, providing two-layered narratives that meld career rundowns with interviews and other personal meetings with his subjects. Most of the 14 single-artist chapters are successful portraits, with the exception of Nathan's profile of Natalie Cole, whose drug problems and career resurrection in the shade of her late father are little more than the stuff of a legend-in-her-own-mind. A dearth of material weakens a closing chapter on young divas Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, and Toni Braxton. But Nathan also provides many invaluable, eye-opening moments, such as the story of a baseball-bat-wielding Phillips threatening to smash up the offices of a record company slow to pay royalties. Finally, he fills out the received wisdom on "X-rated" Millie Jackson, who says, "When I'm home, it's crossword puzzles, television, and the kids." Enjoyable to read but ultimately less than satisfying

With Soulful Divas, David Nathan - a true lover of r&B music - has compiled interviews with many of his favorite singers of the past 40 years. Some of the subjects, like that of the humorously raunchy Millie Jackson and the troubled Nina Simone, make for compelling reading. Most suffer from his endless fawning however. Take, for instance, Diana Ross. By all other accounts, Miss Ross is a difficult person, yet Nathan makes her out to be practically a saint.
Nathan's frequent access to all of the top divas exposes the modern journalist's dilemma: if he fully captures his subjects in print, warts and all, he risks alienating them and being denied interview access to them in the future. Instead, Nathan fawns all over his subjects and gets repeat interviews with high-profile women who are often leery of the press (Aretha Franklin for one). Because of his "tactics", we are able to enjoy his many interviews in one setting (this book). Too bad most of his portraits don't penetrate the surface.

DIVAS GALORE!!

This was long overdue. Kudus to David Nathan for a job well done. I am especially grateful to have read the sections on the deceased, Phyllis Hyman and the legendary siren, Dionne Warwick (my all time favorite vocalists).
