Salvatore Basile is Cathedral Music Historian as well as a soloist and Senior Cantor of the Cathedral Choir at St. Patrick's Cathedral. He has performed in numerous venues and is a music historian with a vast collection of period recordings.

a fascinating read

This is a fascinating book. I couldn't put it down and read it in two days. If you have the slightest interest in NYC history, church music, choral singing, singers, or Roman Catholic liturgy, you should definitely buy Fifth Avenue Famous. One thing in particular I loved about this book is that it is written by someone who obviously knows from direct experience all the little quirks of professional church musicians and the way they work. I gained a new understanding of the various papal pronouncements on church music and how they have affected the musicians "in the trenches" throughout the 20th century. Having been in this field myself since 1978, so much of what iss described in these pages rings true; some of the more recent events described touched me personally, as I was an Associate Organist at another major east coast cathedral at the time and met one or two of the people mentioned in the last few chapters. Basile's painstaking research into the life and work of men like Pietro Yon and James Ungerer sent me to the file cabinets to search for their compositions, and I have plans to perform some long-neglected mass settings this spring as a result. One word of warning, though: if you are someone looking for lots of detailed information about the organs of St. Patrick's, you will not find what you are looking for in this book. The author certainly gives enough information to satisfy most readers, but he is not an organist and does not spend page after page describing pipe scalings and wind pressures. That being said, an appendix with a stoplist or two might have been nice, but that would have been only a pleasant bonus. There are many fascinating photographs included. Fifth Avenue Famous is entertaining, edifying, and absolutely worth buying for yourself and for your friends with similar interests.

Fine history of NY Church Music Scene

As a former member of the Boy Choristers (1962 - 1966) at St. Pat's and living with my Dad being in the Men's choir from 1950 until the time of Courboin's retirement, AND "church hopping" on Sunday afternoons while in college to go to organ recitals, this book has now given me a well-rounded complete history of St. Pat's. But, not only St. Pat's. Mr. Basile also gives great insight as to why the music program had its ups and downs and why there are so many churches in that neighborhood.
Since singing in that great space, watching Dr. Courboin improvise at the organ console during communion and getting yelled at for yawning during Midnight Mass have been my inspiration for my life in music, I am so grateful for this book. I'm sure there are thousands of people that have been "taken" by St. Pat's into a life-long love of music, whatever the genre that speaks to each of them.
It is also for anyone involved in church music. It supports my belief that the church musician is the unsung hero, not the second class citizen, because we all do it for love.

In the formative years of the Methodist Church in the United States, women played significant roles as proselytizers, organizers, lay ministers, and majority members. Although women’s participation helped the church to become the nation’s largest denomination by the mid-nineteenth century, their official roles diminished during that time. In Beyond the Pulpit, Lisa Shaver examines Methodist periodicals as a rhetorical space to which women turned to find, and make, self-meaning.
    In 1818, Methodist Magazine first published “memoirs” that eulogized women as powerful witnesses for their faith on their deathbeds. As Shaver observes, it was only in death that a woman could achieve the status of minister.  Another Methodist publication, the Christian Advocate, was America’s largest circulated weekly by the mid-1830s. It featured the “Ladies’ Department,” a column that reinforced the canon of women as dutiful wives, mothers, and household managers. Here, the church also affirmed women in the important rhetorical and evangelical role of domestic preacher. Outside the “Ladies Department,” women increasingly appeared in “little narratives” in which they were portrayed as models of piety and charity, benefactors, organizers, Sunday school administrators and teachers, missionaries, and ministers’ assistants. These texts cast women into nondomestic roles that were institutionally sanctioned and widely disseminated.
    By 1841, the Ladies’ Repository and Gatherings of the West was engaging women in discussions of religion, politics, education, science, and a variety of intellectual debates. As Shaver posits, by providing a forum for women writers and readers, the church gave them an official rhetorical space and the license to define their own roles and spheres of influence. As such, the periodicals of the Methodist church became an important public venue in which women’s voices were heard and their identities explored.

A great Primer/Tune up

What an absolutely amazing book!

Tim Maloney, professional animator, takes readers who are basicaly familiar with computer animation from concept to completion. His vast experience shines through in his treatments of writing, storyboarding, recording, layout, character design, timing, animation, editing, desing, and finishing.

This is so cool, as his text follows the steps clearly. The bonus DVD gives links to animation programs and helpful examples.

Perfect for the budding animator.

The book covers not only what one would need to know about animation, but also provides information on the basic rules of art that one would find in any good art instruction book. This combination, as well as readability and style, is what makes this a dynamite book and a great tool for the at home animator.

breton's base work for his later postmodern thought

Breton's most famous work was "A radical philosophy of saint Paul", published in 2011 when his refined postmodern position was put forward. This work from 9 years prior reveals to the reader the pre-formative emergence of that postmodern thought. One of the big differences we see is the presentation of the existential emotive base to his thinking that was missing in 2011. Bultmann fills this position here and lends to additional work in the areas of articulating the feeling-percepts of the paradox of the logos of the cross; which then contribute to defining the motivational set of standing-purposes in the unconscious. Basically he says the cross calls for two judgments and two reversals to form our motivation. He even goes on to propose four standing-purposes of his own. Then transferring into consciousness leads to triad-presentations of the unity of community as: "word-spirit-purpose"; and the triad for the logos of the cross as: "being-thought-life". He presents the logic of the cross in an 8-step process to define positing. What you will find is an emerging process headed towards the neo-left stance that isn't quite "radical" yet. This book, therefore, will even satisfy conservatives. At times, he sounds like a professor at a Christian college instead of a postmodern philosopher. So there is probably a broader appeal here. I've read both books and I felt there was plenty of new content here to justify the purchase.
His way of using Bultmann as a pre-figure of postmodern thinking does make some good sense and he does not need to distort things that much. Breton is a solid thinker; a theologian rather than a philosopher. And, even nine years ago, he was very accomplished in his thought. I'm posting five stars for this aggressive work from 2002.

In nearly 60 poems, Myers (145th Street) treats readers to a tour of Harlem's past and present, its hopes and fears, through the voices of narrators young and old. Together they create a pastiche of the community's fixtures, the church ("Wake up Lazarus! Wake up Paul!/ Wake the congregation and lift their hearts"), the barber shop for men, the hairdresser for women ("My mouth is sealed, you don't even see a crack, / 'Cause I ain't the kind to talk behind nobody's back"), rent parties (where people gathered to eat, drink and to help the host pay the rent) and Sylvia's restaurant. "Clara Brown's Testimony," parts I-IV provides a continuity through the collected impressions, as she describes her love for Harlem, through heartbreak (when she and her sister do not make the Cotton Club chorus line, she's told it's because her skin is too dark: "That was the day I learned that being black wasn't no simple thing, even in Harlem") and more often joy. Myers offers differing perspectives on milestone events such as Jackie Robinson joining the Dodgers, as well as subjects closer to home, such as young love, or a pairing of poems by a father and his drug-addict daughter. Another especially moving cluster of poems rotates among three WWII vets from the 369th Infantry, known as the "Harlem Hellfighters," one of them blinded by a Southern sheriff after the war, on their way home. And Harlem is indeed home, to all of the people who give voice to its pains and pleasures. Readers will want to visit again and again. Ages 12-up.

Not Quite What I Was Expecting

I read a review of this book in a textbook on adolescent literature that was used in one of my graduate school courses. The review spoke highly of this collection of poetry, and I've enjoyed Myers fiction works, so I figured it would be a great addition to my YA library (I am a high school English teacher). However, when I received the item and began reading it, I wasn't as thrilled as I anticipated being. The poems, while good in their own right, did not strike me as poems that would attract the young (and struggling) readers in my classroom. I would advise leafing through this book at the library first, if you are considering using it in your classroom, prior to actually purchasing. I still may attempt to find a way to use it (perhaps with my Honors classes), but the poems didn't leap off the page as easily accessible to my students, nor particularly relevant to their adolescent lives.

The Newbery Medalist returns to the subject matter of Indian Chiefs and Buffalo Hunt --though with a narrower scope--in this recounting of the 1833-1834 expedition of Prince Maximilian of Germany and the artist Karl Bodmer up the Missouri River. While Maximilian's own journal provides details of a difficult trek, the book's primary focus is the winter spent by Bodmer and the Prince with the Mandan and Hidatsa tribes--details of their daily lives, customs, modes of dress and beliefs. The book is generously if unevenly illustrated, chiefly with works by Bodmer, whose watercolors of individuals are direct and immediate. However, engravings later produced in Europe seem stereotyped, and several large oil paintings are not well reproduced. Background information and sites to visit today fill out the volume. Readers of Freedman's other titles on Native American topics will find much of interest here, though some may question the reliability of two European dilettantes concerning a culture they visited only briefly. Ages 10-up.

Grade 4 Up-- In 1833-34, Maximilian, a German prince, and Karl Bodmer, a Swiss artist, travelled by river to what is today North Dakota. There they wintered with the Mandan and Hidatsa, fascinating and flourishing peoples who would be all but exterminated in the 1837 smallpox epidemic. Drawing expertly on his own knowledge and on Maximilian's own detailed account, Freedman tells the story of the Europeans' adventure against the background of the Indians' culture. In a simple but assured style, he conveys copious information effortlessly in the course of a compelling narrative. His ability to bring the Mandan and Hidatsa vividly to life is rendered especially poignant by his final description of their passing. The superb, limpid prose alone would make this book a winner, but the outstanding illustrations guarantee its irresistibility. Bodmer was a competent draughtsman but a master of figure studies. The Mandan were stylish dressers, and Bodmer delighted in depicting them in ceremonial regalia. Unforgettable, bright watercolor portraits punctuate genre scenes of domestic life and landscapes delineating the villages, river, fort, etc. It is hard to imagine a more appealing tribute to the best of two cultures: Native American integrity and European intrepidity. --Patricia Dooley, University of Washington, Seattle

In 1833, a German prince, Maximilian of Wied (1782-1867), hired the young Swiss artist Karl Bodmer (1809-93) and set out with him to study Native Americans. They wintered with the Mandans in what is now North Dakota; Maximilian spent the next four years editing his extensive journals, producing a book illustrated with engravings that Bodmer made from his own paintings (which were then sent to Wied, where they stayed until 1962; they're now in a museum in Omaha). Quoting extensively from Maximilian's account, Freedman describes the journey and, especially, the Mandans and Hidatsas as Maximilian found them: their customs, artifacts, social structure, and the individuals who became their close friends. Bodmer's paintings and sketches- -landscapes, portraits, and active scenes--appear on almost every double spread, occasionally varied with his engravings or other illustrations, e.g., self-portraits by Mandan friends who were interested in Bodmer's technique. The book closes with the Indians' later history (these tribes were devastated by smallpox in 1837) and five ``Places to Visit.'' As he has done so often, most recently in The Wright Brothers (1992 Newbery Honor), Freedman combines a lucid, gracefully written, impeccably authentic text with beautifully chosen historical illustrations in a handsome and fascinating book; the result here is especially compelling because the material will be new to most readers. Have you ever thought ancient culture was boring? I'm sure we all have. Do you want to learn something without the threat off falling asleep? If so pick up The Olympians: Great Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Greece, By Leonard Everett Fisher. You can learn about the 12 most important gods and goddesses of ancient Greece in an interesting way.

The book had so much information on each god or goddess. There was a paragraph about each god or goddess with any background information or important things to know. Their Roman name, parents and symbols followed that. The first page also gave a little information on the Greeks themselves and gods' and goddesses' home, Mount Olympus. The last page was a family tree that showed whom the gods' and goddesses' parents were and who their own children were.

The book was also written in a way where everyone could understand what was being said. Almost no big or confusing words were used and it was written clearly and plainly. For example, "Cronus's son, Hades, was the god of wealth and of the dead---the lower world."

The Olympians: Great Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Greece is an excellent book. It has lots of facts about the 12 most important gods and goddesses. It also is written in a way that everyone can understand. It was a very interesting book and I would recommend it to anyone.

I found this book after reading "Carpetbagger of Conscience." Having an ancestor from Buckfield, Maine who was also a Georgia carpetbagger from 1866 to 1882, I wanted to have a better understanding of what he did. He (Charles Prince) is mentioned a number of times in this book and I learned a bit more about him but also what was going on in Georgia and the south at that time. Just saw the movie "Lincoln" and I recommend this book and "Carpetbagger of Conscience" to enhance understanding of the time period. The letters are fascinating and if you knew the women and men of Buckfield at that time you would be astounded as to how a tiny Maine town could have produced such folks who were active on a national stage.
