He also uncovers the frequent interaction between the state and local residents, who used the state’s liberal rhetoric to gain personal economic advantage.

Seen through the lens of the administration of la Salina’s salt works, Rosenthal provides a firsthand account of the role of local institutions and fiscal management in the larger process of state building. His study offers new perspectives on the complex network of republican Colombia’s political culture, and its involvement in provincial life across the nation.

About the Author
James Ryan is a screenwriter, director, playwright, and teacher. He has written screenplays for Hollywood Pictures, Warner Bros., and Spring Creek Productions. He is the writer and director of the film the Young Girl and the Monsoon, wrote for the Days and Nights of Molly Dodd on television, and his plays have been produced off-Broadway and in many theaters across the country. He is an adjunct Professor of Playwriting in the Actor’s Studio MFA program at the New School for Social Research University in New York.

Highest Rank for Screenwriting Books

I came across this book at the NYPL for the Performing Arts. I have read dozens of books on writing and screenwriting in particular and can honestly say that this book would rank as one of the most refreshing and thought-provoking ones. I love how simply and clearly the idea of the need to go back and forth from conscious thinking to subconscious thinking is explained in a step-by-step way from start to finish of the process of writing a screenplay.
I longed to read something about writing for TV and unfortunately this book doesn't offer that. I cannot give it less than five stars because of that as its subject is screenwriting and not TV writing.
I would have loved to read Mr. Ryan take on the process when writing a TV pilot. Surely some of the advice here can be implemented while other is irrelevant.

Second Subtitle Says It All

This is a great book, unfortunate title, but great book. It's subtitle regarding compelling characters is on the nose - which in this case is a good thing.

This is probably not the first screenwriting book you should read, but definately one you should read before you try to fill that empty page. Realize that screenplays are highly formatted, and the writer can't stray too far from that structure and expect to have his work read. But, if you have read Ackerman, Field, Hicks, Hunter, Kitchen, Walker, and/or Russin & Downs there is STILL MUCH TOO LEARN in the pages of this book! For a different way of developing your story within that strict screenplay format (maybe THE way for your style of writing or conceptualizing a story) I highly recommend "Screenwriting from the Heart". My only complaint is that it seems Ryan hasn't written any other books since.

James Ryan's idea of writing from the heart reinforces confidence in the hearts of novice writers. As opposed to most of the other approaches which scare the novice showing that the writing process is an alien mechanism which has to be learnt from the seasoned Gurus or some institutions, rather than by intuition. Ryan demystifies the myth behind the writing process as, "there is nothing very abstract or academic about writing; it is an art form, yes, but first and foremost it is a craft." (pp. 5) While reading the first half of the book, this starting assurance has helped me to proceed further with enthusiasm. But, somewhere along the line, I found a question which was bothering me. That is, "How do you judge your own work whether you have achieved a genuine product of your heart or synthetic product of overflowing intellect, based on this approach?" I didn't find the answer to this question yet, but, this question is not meant as a complaint. James Ryan explains how the intangible creative flow from the heart can be triggered consciously by choosing an object. This exercise sounded very interesting and promising. Over all, this is a very useful book for both beginning writers and experienced writers.
One small comment I cant resist sharing with the co-readers and the author: On the one hand, Ryan advocates the ORIGINALITY that a writer can discover from his/her work, and on the other hand he tells us how there are already existing/fixed styles and types of films. This comes as a slight contradiction in the book: if every writer starts respecting his/her own originality, he/she can't stop it at the content only..it could eventually extend to inventing a new style or type!
I wrap up again summing up that this is a great book which gives a deep insight into the complex writing process without scaring the novice writer.. and to an experienced writer, it serves as a tool to re-examine if he/she is on the right track. This book shows us how we can control the final product, the screenplay by working on the central controlling element, the heart, just like how we can affect the external beauty of a plant by just feeding its roots. 'the heart.'

To combat his inner demons and escape his uncaring family, the teen, an outdoor enthusiast, simply walks away into the Wisconsin wilderness, determined to survive on his own. The concept of Carter's story is appealing, but the execution falls flat. The pace is plodding, and the survivalist aspect isn't explored deeply enough. In truth, the story suffers from a lack of focus as it concentrates neither on the wilderness angle nor Andy's mental-health struggles. He seems less sick than rightfully angry at his family and their lack of support, and his trek into the woods is more about running away than proving his ability to thrive with little to no supplies. Another fine novel from Carter

Once again, Carter has created an impelling and believable central character struggling to deal with unfavorable circumstances. Facing not simply an alcoholic father but also his own chemical imbalance that makes him anxious and prone to delusion, 15-year-old Andy finally decides that the only solution for him is to leave it all behind--to leave his family and his own troubled past and make his way into the vast wooded spaces of Canada to live alone. Where Gary Paulsen might have made this a novel of a successful survival in such a life, Carter delves into a far more likely scenario: a young man's immaturity and inability to make life-changing decisions. Andy is a likeable, but deeply flawed, character whom young readers are likely first to identify with and then to be fearful for, as Carter brings Andy's problems to the fore. Andy's narration is frank, gruff and sometimes crude, in the way of 15-year-old boys, and this novel is not for readers who want easy resolutions and rainbows at the end of every cloud, but for those unafraid to deal with serious issues. A serious and mature work.

About the Author
James Craig was born in Montreal, Canada. He studied fine art in Montreal and Paris before coming to the US. Mr. Craig received his B.F.A. from Cooper Union and his M.F.A. from Yale University. He lives in New York where he is the Design Director for Watson-Guptill Publications and the American Artist magazine. Mr. Craig is a member of the New York Art Directors Club, he teaches graphic design at The Cooper Union and lectures widely.

An excellent design manual

There are many books on typography and design. This is one of the better, if not the best, that I have read. It is readable as well as informative and comprehensive. Each topic is presented on a two-page spread with visual examples. A good book for the beginner and a good reference for those with more experience who are looking for a competent addition to their library.

The pachage was opened and dirty. The book was new but dirty and with part of the package glued to its back cover and had some bent corners included its cover. I was very dissapointed about it. The good thing was that the book arrived on time.

I searched the earth for this book

When I was very young, I borrowed this wonderful book from a Brooklyn Public Library. The Author, Michael Burban, was a student of Robert Beverley Hale, and in his footsteps, he taught through dissecting old master drawings. There was no greater draughtsman than Michelangelo. Imagine how much can be learned from when one of the most respected artists of the Students art League, picks apart the drawings of Michelangleo. Lessons from Michelangelo. The drawings are unparalled. Burban, chooses, old and late drawings that span the life of Michelangelo. Burban, starts out by pointing out the very basics of form, perspective, proportion, gesture, then delves into artistic anatomy, and finishes with some thoughts on drapery. It stresses discipline and basics, and doesn't sell any shortcuts. After keeping this book out of the library for quite some time, it was mistakenly returned. I searched the library for months, never to see it again. I ventured to the Students art league in NY, unfortunately Burban was away for that term. I contacted a used book specialist. Nearly two years passed, and I received a phone call, the book was found, the price was twice the retail, 75 dollars, what a deal. It was the easily the best book I ever bought. I love this book, it is one of only a few books which I can say has real sentimental value. In a way it changed my life. I appreciate Michelangelo and his beautiful drawings, in no small part, thanks to this book. I wish Burban would write another book, or at least that this book would see a reprint. If you ever have a chance to buy this book, don't think twice. Its a great book.

Excellent work...sadly out of print

I just spoke to Michael Burban a few weeks ago, and am trying to convince him to release a new version of the book. He says he has learned much since he first wrote it, so the new book--if it ever comes out--should be exciting.

Great book on the work of a Master written by one!!!

I had the great privilege of studying with Mr. Burban at the Art Student's League. In this book Burban distills a great body of knowledge into digestible form for those of us aspiring to reach a level of skill commensurate with his. The determined figurative artist will read this book over and over and over again. Few teachers have broached this subject with the great ability to communicate these concepts as well as Burban, Richer and Hale. Fortunately for us the tradition of great figure drawing can continue to thrive thanks to their efforts!!!

While Krull emphasizes Chavez's younger years that inspired him to become an activist and focuses on the 1965 grape pickers boycott and the 300-mile march that resulted in the first farm workers' contract, the Adlers' book includes those events, but provides a more linear approach. It covers Chavez's life from birth to death, providing important facts, such as the posthumous award of the Congressional Medal of Freedom, not mentioned in Krull's title. The selfless struggles of labor leader Chavez are given a tempered and lucid treatment in this educational overview. It only takes one page for the Adlers to zero in on the theme of inequality: “Chavez and others who helped put food on Americans’ tables often had no tables of their own, no real homes.” After losing their farm in the Great Depression, the Chavez family headed west, living an itinerant lifestyle as they moved from farm to farm—and shuttling young Cesar among 65 different elementary schools. The books focuses mainly on Chavez’s later fights for better wages and safer working conditions. Three of his hunger strikes are described, though Olofsdotter keeps her illustrations gentle and ennobling. The characters are drawn in an intentionally stiff style that fits with the depth-challenged folk art backgrounds, most of which are dominated by the color of sand. The text, meanwhile, is peppered with quotes from Chavez, all of which are backed up with source notes. An elegant introduction to a man who inspired thousands. Grades 1-4. --Daniel Kraus

This is a beautifully expressive picture book biography of Cesar Chavez, a man who stood up for the rights of all farm workers!

Young Cesar looked pensive as he rubbed his hands together while his mother tended to his brothers and sisters inside a shabby dwelling with only a sheet for a door. They were itinerant farm workers, field hands who owned nothing but worked very hard for very little in return. He "traveled with his family from one farm to the next to pick beans, broccoli, lettuce, and other crops." It was not an easy life, but his mother, Juana, made sure that he recognized his own self worth and acknowledged that of others by saying such things as, "What you do to others, others do to you."

Cesar was able to go to school, but it hurt when he was unable to speak Spanish or acknowledge his culture. The emotional pain was often accompanied by a stern look and the smack of a ruler across his knuckles. ENGLISH! But Cesar Chavez was not English ... he was Hispanic and one day would stand up for his rights and those of others. In the meantime it was the Great Depression and he had to struggle with his family in the fields. They were homeless and had to keep moving from field to field to pick the crops that made others rich. Would this inhumane system ever stop? Would he be able to help change it?

This is a beautifully expressive picture book biography of Cesar Chavez, a man who stood up for the rights of all farm workers. The importance of family and the regard for the rights of others was clearly expressed in this book. For example, when the family was mistreated or working conditions were harsh Librado, his father, would say, "Okay, let's go," something that Cesar later commented on by saying, "Our dignity meant more than money." His work in organizations such as the Community Service Organization (CSO) is mentioned as are the boycotts and fasting. In the back of the book are important dates, an author's note, source notes, a selected bibliography, and additional recommended websites to explore.

Cesar Chavez, co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America and a highly influential civil rights leader, learned from his parents to value dignity even in the face of poverty. The Great Depression had caused his family to lose their Arizona farm and to move to California in search of work. Already at a young age Cesar helped his family to earn a living by picking fruits and vegetables. Constantly on the move (sometimes in response to especially poor working conditions that the family refused to tolerate), Cesar attended sixty-five elementary schools and was forced to drop out of school at the age of fifteen to work full-time.

As a young adult, Cesar channeled these hardships into action, beginning with a voter registration drive and subsequently with the formation of a fruit pickers union. Over time he used a variety of forceful but nonviolent methods to advocate for farm workers' rights, including marches, church meetings, sit-ins, boycotts, and hunger strikes. His organizing tactics resulted not only in higher wages, benefits, and improved working conditions for farm workers, but also in the promotion of Latino civil rights.

Experienced biographer David Adler and his son do an excellent job in helping children become more familiar with an important advocate for social justice and worker rights. The detailed narrative is nicely balanced with a compelling story and bold illustrations to keep younger readers thoroughly engaged.

This book is well written and gave a lot of details about Cesar Chavez's life. I purchased it for use in my 2nd grade classroom. This text would probably appeal more to an intermediate level class. It was not engaging enough for my students. I gave it 5 stars because it is a good book with wonderful illustrations.

I know you must be at your wits end by now, for not hearing from me.

I landed in France on D-Day with combat engineers in the assault wave. Helped storm through the beach defenses and am still at the front. (Everything is frontline area here right now anyway).

My outfit has been [censored] so you know just where I want to be. Although I'm still officially in my old company, actually I'm on detached service with the [censored].

And, darling, we are raising hell.

Last night, I had charge [censored] while our outfit ferried the [censored.]

You can tell our kids that daddy got plenty of Nazis.

This book kept my interest cover to cover. Lawrence Cane is obviously the epitome of a soldier and family man, the essense of the American service man in W.W. 2. From basic training thru the occupation of Germany,he was a man who had not only to fight for his place in the war ,but then to fight the war from the first wave to hit the beach on Normandy,to the liberation of the concentration camps, to time spent in the rebuilding of Germany in Eisleben.

A True American Hero

Many years ago, when doing research for my graduate thesis on those heroic Jews who went to fight Hitlerism in Spain, I came across the name of Larry Cane. While I was able to make contact with many vets in the Lincoln Battalion, sad to say, Mr. Cane had passed on before I had a chance to contact him. His obituary told of his valor, and of his idealism, and while he was, yes, a member of the Communist Party USA while in Spain and serving heroically in the United States Army in World War II, Larry Cane had the intellectual honesty to walk away from the horrendous Stalinist sewer once he was aware of its true evil.

His son is to be profusely thanked for releasing this correspondence of a man - yes, a Leftist, but whose Jewish background, perhaps even more so than his CP affiliation, made this man - a decision to fight evil and oppression and believe in the unity of all mankind. Cane writes movingly of the D-Day Battle, of coming across emanciated Jewish concentration camp survivors in Germany, of his pride in America, of being a Jew, and yes, of being a Communist and pride in the Soviet Union as the ally that it was (of course then being unaware of what a murderous fascist Joe Stalin really was). He writes of the common soldiers that he served alongside with, and there is correspondence from some of them that attest to Cane's own bravery in battle. And he writes of his love of his family and of the baby son who now has been able to bring this unique correspondence to publication.

Larry Cane earned the Silver Star and a Battlefield Commission to the rank of Captain in the United States Army for his heroism on the battlefields of France after D-Day, and for his role in helping to smash the Hitlerian evil. A worthy read for all Americans interested in our "Greatest Generation" - and in the unique experiences of those who bravely chose to fight Hitlerism in Spain before the world recognized what was at stake for all mankind.

A prewar correspondent and humorist for the Springfield Republican, he continued writing during the conflict under the pseudonym Dunn Browne, informing and entertaining readers with his experiences and opinions on a wide range of political, military, religious, and social topics. The letters were originally compiled for an 1866 edition of the same name. The annotations by respected historian Sears (e.g., Chancellorsville, LJ 1/97) add to the value of the letters and make this edition more useful as well as accessible. Stephen Sears is the author of many acclaimed Civil War histories. A former editor at American Heritage, he lives in Connecticut.
