Grade 3 Up-Kimmel provides glimpses at the lives of 12 saints, each of whom has been linked to an animal in some way. In short expository essays, no more than three pages each, he presents the legends and gives the chronological and geographical context for each individual. His superb storytelling allows readers to come away with a clear sense of why these people are honored above others. Mention is made of the saints' feast days, their emblems and their meanings, and the particular groups over which they are considered patrons. Kimmel recounts how Francis of Assisi brokered a bargain between a menacing wolf and the community that agreed to feed it meat in exchange for peace. In another story, angels assist Ireland's Saint Brigid when her father demands that she replace the milk and butter that she has already given away to the poor. Winch's dramatic, full-page paintings are filled with deep colors and images that highlight each saint's identity and significance. An author's note describes the process of canonization. For collections where saints are important, this is a rich treasure, but it could bring understanding and tolerance of differing traditions to any reader.

Gr. 3-6, younger for reading aloud. There are several books about the relationship gentle Saint Francis had with animals. He appears in two of the stories offered here as well. But Kimmel goes a step further and retells 10 other legends and tales about saints and their relationship with God's creatures. In one, bees cluster around the mouth of the baby (who grows up to be St. Ambrose), a sign that was interpreted as a gift from God. Bishop Hugh of England uses the actions of a swan to stop a massacre of the Jews. St. Brigid, one of the two women saints included, feeds a crowd with milk from her cow. Kimmel is a fine storyteller, but he doesn't have much to work with in a few of these stories, probably because real details are scanty. The full-color, full-page paintings incorporate some of the tension and excitement the stories themselves lack. Winch uses dramatic close-ups and sensitive scenes to bring the actions of the saints closer to children. Books that chronicle the lives of saints remain a viable genre; the focus on animals adds to the appeal. Ilene Cooper

Great stories about saints
By K. Roman
Saint Francis' "Sermon to the Birds" precedes the stories. Though we are not birds, in a way it prepares us, the readers, for the wonder and mystery that is to follow. The stories are quite interesting. Each tale ends with an informative tidbit about the Saint. For example, "Saint Notburga is the patron saint of poor farmers and hired servants. Her feast day is September 14. Her emblem is the sickle."
John Winch has made two types of illustrations in this book. Before each tale there is an intriguing representation of an artifact representing the Saint. One looks like a painting on wood, one looks like a small statue, another looks like a coin. These gray illustrations also mention the country and rough dates that the Saint lived. I like these symbolic illustrations even more than the colorful acrylic folk paintings that plainly detail the stories.
The verso mentions that "The author's principal source for this book is Butler's Lives of the Saints (New York: P.J. Kennedy & Sons, 1956)."
The author's note is brief and explains what makes a person a saint and the canonization process. The author concludes, "This process does not make a person a saint. Only God can do that. Through canonization, the church recognizes what God has already done."
