A difficult read

I must confess that I mistook this book for a crash course in modern theatre, hoping it would prove instructive on the inner workings of both professional troupes on Broadway and national tours through the avid community theatre scene in almost every city. I sought explanation of the myriad of colorful theatre terms and their origins. Not here...My bad.
Graham's book is a compendium of theatre history (from pre-history, actually) through today. His convention of using a single two-page spread for each "era" about which he speaks is clever, but neccessarily leaves very few pages for what is commonly considered "theatre" today. In addition, the book uses unusually small, thin type for body text and shrinks most of his colorful illustrations, artwork and photos to near disappearance.
I found none of the humor "laugh-out-loud" funny, though most was witty and wry observation on the foibles of actors, theatre owners, politicians and churchmen over the dramatic arts' long history. (In fact, Graham's biting comments about the church's long repression of theatre arts form a continual underlying, and uncomfortable theme in the book. Seems as if Professor Graham is getting back a bit of his own for the admittedly cruel and non-sensical restrictions of the Christian Church.)
The glossary of theatre terms in the appendix was instructive and could have been substantially longer. I'm simply not a member of the audience to whom this work was prepared. That audience, though, is warned to bring a magnifying glass to the reading room.

A very funny book

I did not think the history of theater could be so funny. The author never condescends, but the information here is presented in a great format that will make you laugh out loud. Highly recommended, especially for all of those theater majors out there.

An invitation to make copies of famous paintings on eggs at an art gallery leads her to make revelations about painting and art, as well as into an adventure with a thief. Whenever Pauline looks at a famous painting, the egg she lays is her own interpretation of the art work. When a thief steals her favorite?a Degas' Ballerina?she creates eggs with a picture of the thief to help the police solve the crime. Technical quality of the tape is good. The male narrator adapts his voice for the characters. The pauses to allow readers to study the pictures are especially useful. Art works represented in the story are sketches of the originals and are labeled. The Art Gallery also has sketches of Egyptian artifacts. This book and tape can be used to introduce famous works of art, to teach concepts of art and creativity, and to introduce mysteries on a primary level. Use this with Matthew's Dream by Leo Lionni (Knopf, 1991) and The Art Lesson by Tomie dePaola (Putnam, 1989) for perception of art and artists. Eggs Mark the Spot

The book, EGGS MARK THE SPOT, arrived right on time. It was in very good condition, almost like new except for a library card pocket on the back page. It was opened and read immediately.

The story was suggested by some children to the author as a follow up to the first book about Pauline, the hen, in THE EASTER EGG FARM. One of my grandchildren giggled about Pauline's special talent. She thought that Pauline had the skill to be a great detective.

Reading the book also raised an interesting discussion about a trip to the art museum. Could you identify some of the museum paintings pictured in the book?

Memories!

This was a book I got for Christmas in 1998 from my parents. I lost it when my parents divorced and I moved. So my husband found it on amazon after hearing my sob story and bought it for me for Christmas! I love the book. Hanson is still to this day my favorite band. The book came to me in perfect condition, just like my old book when i was 11.

THE book about the Heartthrobs of the Heartland

Hanson-mania, although not everyone is a participant, is vastly growing across, not only the nation, but the world. For all we know, it might grow until everyone loves Clarke Issac, Jordan Taylor, and Zachary Walker Hanson. Yes. Those are their names, as you'll learn in the book Hanson: The Official Book. This book has something no other book about Hanson has. No, not pictures, although it is chock full of intimate pictures, selected by the guys themselves, taken by their favorite photographers. But, it was reviewed by the guys, and was written by a friend of theirs (Jarrod Gollihare). So, you can be sure that all of the information is true. Some of the information may have come straight from Isacc, or Taylor, or Zachary. You just don't know. One of the best qualities of the book, is that it doesn't single one guy out, and although it does talk about each guy individually, there isn't a chapter about each one proclaiming useless facts that any true Hanson fan knows by heart. Also, if you'd like to find out more about the guys, and what they looked like, way back when, you can find pictures, and stories about how Hanson became HANSON. You can see just how alike Taylor and Zachary look. You can see them with zits, pageboy haircuts, early instuments, and in some shots, you can discover what color underwear they wear.(i.e. page 19 where Taylor is hanging from a tree). You can catch different moods of the three assets to the group (the vocalists), and possibly find out really, truly which is your favorite Hanson. All in all, I'd say that the book is very well written, and will soon become a favorite among fans of those Heartthrobs from the Heartland.

OFFICIAL...Dependable...' Reasonable '...

Why do I say it's official? The reason is obvious enough... Why dependable? Well, you get the point... Why reasonable? I have both heard of and read about comments made on this Hanson Official Book and find that the majority of the people/fans find it appealing while some others would say that it does not provide much information...etc... In my opinion, yes, this book might not give the kind of information such as the size of Taylor's boxers, the kind of shampoo Isaac uses, or Zac's shoe size...just to name a few...(trust me, according to a lot of the fans, this is THE type of info they have been trying to find...not that there is anything wrong with it, the curiosity is understandable...) but it does provide readers with a reasonably detailed look into what Hanson's earlier years have been like, revealing 'nothing but the truth' (am I in court?) about how Hanson has come to be the internationally known band, the music sensation, how Isaac, Taylor, and Zac feel about their success, and, you know, basically their insights on music (after all, this whole thing is supposed to be focused on music..."we're three guys who write, play and sing our music...That's what Hanson is..." said Taylor Hanson...That's what Hanson is about...and I feel that the book does make the point...) I enjoyed the book and think that as the content added to what I already knew about Hanson, it gave me a better idea of Ike, Tay, and Zac's background. It would not be a bad idea to have a 'Hanson biography II' some time in the future since there are so much going on in their lives...=)

Well worth it...

I don't often write reviews. I read them with each purchase and normally I don't feel the need to contradict others. I found that Bruce Bain's "pretend you never seen one before..." to be chilidish and absolutely off the mark. I am an art student and art appreciation major. When I first went to art class I was self-taught without instruction. This was a good thing. My first professor advised the class "Everything you learned before now forget. You learned it that wrong way! I will teach you the right way". It is just like this that the artist is telling you to forget your preconceived notions and look at subjects with a fresh eye. I picked up this book in the book store and ending up reading ten pages standing in the aisle before I knew it. Its a marvelous find. I highly recommend. I've always had problems drawing the human form and this was immensly helpful.

First of all, nobody needs to PRETEND anything, in order to draw. I mean I'm sorry, but most of us are already living in reality. We have SEEN figures before. and secondarily, if the answer to drawing is PRETENDING, why can't everyone just PRETEND to be able to draw and be done with it? The author's mindset here is absolutely silly with circular logic. This is like saying, "All you have to do to be able to learn to drive a car, is to *...pretend you've never seen one before.*

All I'm saying here is that if an author is going to give a tersely-worded command, articulating a fundamental rule for drawing, why can't it just be something that makes common sense?

An Author might say, "Take your time!" "Be patient." "Never, EVER, beat yourself up!" ....but no; we get, "Pretend you've never seen one before."

I suppose I'm suggesting a better standard for authorship; that is to say, that someone writing a book should be familiar with a subject, and that if somone is offering a rule or commandment as part of a METHOD, then it ought to reflect a more generalized common sense such as ordinary working people are familiar with.

I have continually in my mind, one particular rule regarding drawing instruction books. (this is my personal rule, but I find it critical in judging HOW-TO-DRAW books). THOU SHALT NOT, in a beginning drawing book, instruct the student in the use of color and painting. Learning simply to draw is fundamental, and requires the total dedication of most of any beginning book. Watson violates this rule with a foray into the use of color, halfway through this book, which at only 128 pages, is far too short on basic drawing. In my opinion it is the multitude of cloned books like Watson's that cause many beginners to give up drawing (and subsequently, painting as well) as a HOPELESS endeavour, and convince themselves that they just cannot "get it". In fact, it's a clear case of The-Instructor-Just-Cannot-Teach.

The illustrations of drawn figure models are stiff, lifeless and inarticulate. It is MASSIVELY overpriced with an exorbitant list price of $24.95. Is this for real??? Unbelieveable! A gross rip-off.

I think I'll simply take Lucy Watson's advise in Chapter #1 and "PRETEND" I never saw this book before.

Bob Allen has been a country music journalist, historian, and critic for the past twenty-five years. He is a contributing editor for Country Music magazine and has written for Esquire, Rolling Stone, and many other publications. The author of George Jones: The Life and Times of a Honky Tonk Legend, he lives in Eldersburg, Maryland.

Tony Byworth has been involved in country music for over 30 years. He edited the monthly magazine Country Music People for six years and was a contributing editor for Billboard, Music Week, and The Stage. In addition, he has written two books on country music and is the recipient of the Country Music Association’s prestigious Wesley Rose (Foreign Media Achievement) Award. He lives in Hertfordshire, England.

Not bad, but not what I expected.

This book is a valuable resource like a previous reader stated if you are redoing a home, or if you want some ideas on innovative installations of materials, but being that I was thinking with a mind of an architect, when I first read this title I thought I would literally see some construction details of some of the more innovative ideas (what materials were used, what thought went behind the design, etc.). Instead, I got some pretty pictures and lots and lots of names of manufactuers, businesses, and architects. A bit disappointing, but a good book to have either way.

Not what I expected

The reason I purchased this book is because it billed itself as a great reference/sourcebook. In my mind, that meant a place to get ideas for contemporary home improvements, as well as a means to make them actually happen. I envisioned a book that showed a photo of a (kitchen, floor, bathroom, some tile, etc.), discuss the actual materials used in EACH setting, and where possible, where they can be found. While there are a few basic references of this type, the bulk of the book gives the name of whatever architect contributed to each setting and then describes the shot in great detail, yet with hardly any information about what's IN it. In addition, many of the pictures are too small/shot too close up/at odd angles to get a lot out of them. I'm sorry, but I did not find this book helpful.

Expectation vs product

The book is more of a catalogue than an architectural publication. It certainly contains lots of contemporary details, but these are often displayed lacking context. I believe this book was published to help architects in their everyday practice, but don't we have enough commercial material these days?

What I was looking for was an album showing contemporary interior design case studies, focusing on details. What I found was another market offer, except published in a hardcover. However, there are some interesting photos in a book, and if you are looking for a tool that could improve communication between designers and their customers it is worth the money.
