About the Author
Susan Peterson is Professor Emerita of Ceramics at Hunter College at the City University of New York. She is responsible for setting up five ceramics departments in the U.S., including the Wichita Art Association School, the Chouinard Art Institute, the University of Southern California, the Idylwild School of Music and Art, and Hunter College at the City University of New York. Peterson is the author of many esteemed books in her field, including the classic manual on ceramic technique, The Craft and Art of Clay (Penguin USA), now in its third edition.

Excellent book!

Contemporary Ceramics by Susan Peterson, Professor Emeritus at Hunter College, is a survey of recent ceramic art showing the work of over 260 artists, each with full-color illustrations, artist statements and brief biographies. It is not a technique book or a history of ceramics edition. It is a stunning array of artistic talent using a variety of techniques showing new artists and directions of new ceramic art. My only suggestions for improvement would be (for future reference) to include how the artists mark their work.

Although she is no longer with us, Susan Peterson will always be respected in ceramic circles. This book is an easy read and will give anyone a basic understanding of the world of ceramics. She was a great educator.

"A Foundation Course in Drawing" by PETER STANYER & TERRY ROSENBERG

As a general rule, there are not many "really good" co-authored books out there. This rambling and disjointed introduction to drawing is no exception. It seems as though, when books have two authors, that both persons simply agree to give a half-effort, in hopes that the two of them can put together a whole, dynamic book. It just doesn't seem to work here.

Extreme language on the cover of a book is a *WARNING*

Words like "Complete guide to" or "Ultimate" or "Essential guide to" etc. "Basic" or even "FOUNDATION COURSE" might seem to give the authorship a great deal of liberty. In fact, it requires that an author really cover the basics, the FOUNDATION, in a very clear and well organized manner. This book lays an incomplete FOUNDATION.

It is limited to "Gesture Drawings" in the first 20 pages, and then, after a lot of wordy text, you reach page 41 before you see the SIMPLIFIED FIGURETTE, or BLOCK PUPPET. Only two of them: One drawn with Cylinders, the other with Ovals. That's it. Just two images, and no more.

The book is over-reaching. It outlines more material than it can cover adequately in a FOUNDATION COURSE. There is a bit of an "attitude" in this book. It's as though the authors are saying:

"If you know already how to copy the line drawings in our lessons, FINE! If you are a BEGINNER, and cannot....TOO BAD!"

The book is divided into Five Sections:
Life drawing, Still Life, Landscape, Abstract Drawing (in a FOUNDATION COURSE??????) and Drawing Systems. Neither of the last two sections belongs in a book on FOUNDATION in drawing. See what I mean? The book is "over-reaching".

Allow me to give yet another example. The Back Cover says this:
"Will help artists of all abilities."

Excuse me, but shouldn't a course laying a FOUNDATION, be of help to BEGINNERS? If someone is already an "artist" shouldn't they be using more advanced books? That is why this book is "over-reaching". The authorship has a fuzzy focus about who the intended audience is.

This book does move into INTERMEDIATE material, but sacrifices BASICS to get there. (over-reaching)

The problem with a multitude of these drawing instruction books are flaws that fall into several categories:

(1) they try to cover virtually EVERYTHING in art generally, including PAINTING or COLOR, or COMPOSITION which means they must skip quickly over their DRAWING BASICS for the beginner to do so. A good drawing book must start with DRAWING, and stick with DRAWING only, for at least 3/4ths of its chapters. The really good drawing books do this.

(2) the author is extremely dull and uninspiring to begin with, illustrating the book with ordinary household objects for suggested drawing exercises; objects like can openers, coffee pots, key chains, tables, chairs, bicycles and has no true justification for putting another drawing book on the market (good books are already in print), and copying the same outline for growth that other books have.

(3) the author is too wordy, loading down the book with unnecessary theory and intellectualizations.

With those flaws in mind, it is clear that "A FOUNDATION COURSE IN DRAWING" is too broad in scope and moves too quickly away from basics into intermediate material (flaw 1), is no better than other books on the market (flaw 2) and the drawings and illustrations are among the worst availble in a basic drawing HOW-TO. (they are REALLY BAD!) The text is alternatively overly-simplistic or overly-complex.

"A FOUNDATION COURSE IN DRAWING" is a poor introduction for any beginner, but the book is inexpensive for 276 pages if that's all you want.

This is a great book filled with constructive projects for Drawing. It is good for people who are beginning to draw to Art teachers. If you are an Art teacher the projects are useful for your classroom in developing student's drawing skills. It thoroughly covers the basics of Drawing. It covers drawing from still life to abstract. I highly recommend this book. It is easy to understand and filled with diagrams for those visual learners out there.

My Favorite book for teaching Roman Numerals

This book makes Roman Numerals easy to understand. You can learn the system in a few easy lessons. It gives a hands on way to learn for those who like to touch and move things when they learn.

I checked it out from the library for my first born. Found it again for my second born and now have decided to buy it.

My 9 yr old son can't get enough numbers (and I can't get far enough away from them--shhh, don't tell him).

But this book's fun and simple art and explanation make it a manual even a math loathing mother could love.

By the way, the other edition on "Look Inside" is nothing like this one--frankly I prefer this one to the old.

And who can resist the horse drawn chariot on the cover?

Simply the best

Biographies, especially judicial biographies, are typically centered around gossip, amateur psychology, political "message," or numbing minutiae. Dean Jeffries avoids those vices by using the late Justice Lewis Powell as the backdrop for an expert analysis of the gripping issues of Powell's tenure on the Court: the death penalty, privacy rights, poverty law, criminal jurisprudence, race and affirmative action, the First Amendment, etc. He tackles each of them with artful prose and persuasive logic.

By depicting these developments as a panorama rather than a series of close ups, Dean Jeffries offers the educated reader invaluable insights into issues that still dominate our own times. Through the prism of events, we easily come to appreciate the extraordinary skills, energy, and intellect of Justice Powell himself. (We are also drawn to reflect on how hateful the present system of "confirmation by ordeal" truly is.)

This book is perfect as a gift for lawyers and anyone truly interested in understanding the law as the environment in which social policy dwells.

A Superb Work

Having read biographies of Brandeis, Frankfurter, Douglas, Fortas, White, Blackmun, Brennan, and others, I have to say this is one of the best available. Frankly, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this work.

Powell is not the most interesting judicial character -- in fact, his personal life is quite dull -- but the jobs he held and the events he witnessed make for great reading. For instance, he was a key figure in Richmond, Virginia politics, school desegregation in the American South, the growth of Big Tobacco, and the power of the American Bar Association.

Jeffries does a solid job of describing these all of these broader elements while also weaving Powell in throughout. He is able to do this so well because of his crisp writing style, great organization, and deep knowledge of substance. Really, the one question I had after finishing this book is, "Just how ambitious was Powell?" The justice clearly had to be to attain a seat on the nation's Highest Court, but his desire for power is no clearer despite the author's efforts.

Kindergarten-Grade 4-This story, adapted from a Yoruba folktale, tells of three brothers who, having completed their manhood ceremonies, must decide on their life's work. The first two make acceptable decisions, but the third boy, Banzar, wants only to be a musician. When the village elders rule that his choice is unacceptable, he leaves. He meets an old, blind praise singer (or griot), and the two spend years traveling while Sholo teaches the young man how to make a living as a musician. When the Singing Man dies, Banzar goes on to become the personal musician of the king of Lagos. One day, he sees his brothers in the marketplace and arranges for a happy reunion. This story imparts the subtle bits of wisdom found in traditional African folklore. Medearis's retelling is well developed and presents a fuller text than found in her Dancing with the Indians (Holiday, 1991) and Our People (Atheneum, 1994). Shaffer's rich oil paintings and decorative borders are lively and capture the mood of the text. Expressive renderings convey the anxiety of approaching manhood, the ambivalence of having to choose between family tradition and one's heart's desire, the shame of failure, and the pride in success. Banzar's humility enables him to return to his family and offer them love and financial assistance.

Banzar composes songs that honor the ancestors and the history of the people; on his flute he plays the melodies he hears in nature. He becomes rich and famous, musician to the king of Lagos; and in time-honored fashion, he returns in triumph to the village that drove him out. The story is great for reading aloud, well paced and rhythmic, with a strong sense of the particular place and culture. It also has the universal folklore elements of the nonconformist outsider son who leaves home, overcomes failure, and makes his way in the world. A Worthy Tale To Tell

I am a storyteller and drummer, so this story is very appealing to me. It combines both. The illustrations are beautiful. This Nigerian tale is simple. It also invokes hope, that there can be a place for the artists in the world. The story is visual and can be "heard," as well, which is perfect considering it is the story of a musician. A person reading this to children could have great fun with it. It almost has the air of a Biblical story. Enjoy it! I currently have a borrowed copy. I am ordering my own for my personal collection!

Look at this brave boy pursuing his dream

This was a really good inspiring book. I think it's great for all elementary levels due to the fact that despite Banzar is a bit different from his two brothers. Rather than deciding to be a farmer or blacksmith like their typical Nigerian traditions he wanted to be a musician. Because of his decision his family kicked him out from not doing their traditional Nigerian jobs how the rest do. So, he still left and made his career of musicianing despite being kicked out. What I love is how he didn't give up his dream because his family didn't accept it. Which is what we should encourage students to pursue: to do what ever kind of job they want to do. The illustrations are wonderful! They go in such detail and I think will catch the attention of they kids because of the colors well mixed. This is a great folktale to introduce them to not only because of telling them they can pursue they dreams no matter how difficult it may seem, but also because it shows a lot about the Nigerian culture and how they like to do things in their traditional ways. There's always that one person who's different and wants to cut that chain of doing the typical ordinary jobs.

African Folktale

In a small village near the town of Lagos there were a man and a woman who had three sons. One became a farmer, the other became a blacksmith and they both were honored. The third son, Banzar, wanted to be a musician and got cast out of the family. Banzar met a blind musician named Sholo who taught him how to play an omele drum and to be a praise singer. The king of Lagos recognized Banzar's talents. So, Banzar became the king's personal musician and was richly rewarded. Banzar was happily reunited with his family at the end.
The book is fun to read. The paintings in the book are colorful and beautiful. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys music and loves reading folktales.

Worth The Money

I don't buy many design books because many of them tend to blur together and look the same after a while. What I really like about 'Typography 21' is that it is an 'annual' for design across many mediums. There is a nice introduction about the jurors and it showcases some of their work, to give you a sense of their backgrounds and then gets right into the work. It is a great source of reference for many needs.
The book itself it very beautiful and if you think the book-jacket is pretty, wait until you see what's underneath it.
Is it any surprise that Imaginary Forces practically owns the motion-graphics category???

I just got this book today ... I have been on the edge of buying it for about a year and lo and behold my stinginess on price paid off! I love this book the quality of the work contained within is fantastic, and the jacket outside done by our friends at ATTIK design is just wonderful. A must by especially at the price! ... quick go get it!!!

Poorly executed

The designs themselves are wonderful, but the publisher did a poor job rendering them on the pages of the book. The photographs were way too small, and did not do justice to the overall compositions, and I needed a magnifying glass to get a decent look at the typefaces.

This book deals with the importance of the Holy Land to different religious and political groups from a Christian perspective (Catholic). It deals with the topics in a very thought-provoking way, juxtaposing the Kingship of God vs. the man-kings that the ancient Jews desired and the importance of the ancient temple(s).
