About the Author

Ulrich Baer is Vice Provost for Arts, Humanities and Diversity and Professor of German and Comparative Literature at New York University. He is editor and translator of Rainer Maria Rilke: Letters of Life, editor of 110 Stories: New York Writes after September 11, and author of several books on poetry and photography. His most recent book is Beggar's Chicken: Stories from Shanghai.

Andrew Hamilton is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Germanic Studies at Indiana University.

I think this book is quite brilliant, an excellent introduction to Rilke's fantastic work. It is a great help in contextualising and further understanding some of the major themes in his work and it is written in a very accessible manner. Baer has built up an astonishing expertise on Rilke but the text never becomes too heavy. It is extraordinary to see how Rilke was thinking about the same topics that occupied some of his friends and acquaintances (like Walter Benjamin)- topics that remain as relevant today as they were in those times.

The pets in the book are adorable and easily modified by the maker for a more individual fleecie if that's what you want. The projects in the book will be welcomed by children because they're cuddly and warm. They can be as colorful as you want them to be and as fanciful as a child thinks they should be. Let your imagination go wild. The availability of patterns and colors in fleece material removes all limits and with the popularity of the Ugly Dolls, these would be an inexpensive custom made substitute --better because they're made by you!

Very cute ideas. I made my first fleecie cat today but choose black and white to make it look like my cat. It does !!! Explanations are very clear, easy to understand. Patterns are accurate. So far I am very pleased and I am planning to make many more fleecies. Great book !!!

Good for beginners

This book mostly contains some step by step screen shots. The book talks mostly about using photoshop as a tool for texturing, and painting. It goes a little bit in other 3d programs such as Maya, 3d max, and Poser. But only covers a few modifiers or special effects. There is no real indepth explanation. As someone who works with 3d max and photoshop, I only recommend it if you are a beginner. The instruction are more like tips here and there.

A Mediocre Book of Pretty Pictures No Substance

This book is full of nice images, if I can say so it is more a gallery of Digital Fantasy Art then a training book, the editorial review is a little misleading. It is not a training nor lesson book, it is a Tip book only. For instance, there will be a picture on the page and the author will explain 1-2 tips on how they created the light for that particular piece, nothing extraordinary. Not only that, but most of the images and "tutorials/tips" can be found on the internet. All you have to do is do a search on Epilouge or search other digital art sites etc. and you will find many of the images that are in the book.

The author's details about hardware and computers are mundane and "filler up" material. The target of this book is for beginners only. Other skill levels will want something of more substance.

If you are wanting a book that will learn you how to digital paint try Don Seegimiller's books. If you would like to learn how to create compositions and/or image effects you will not receive this from this book, only a smattering of tips (which are good, but not detailed enough). Books like these should be giving tips that are rare and unknown, not re-hashing tips the reader already knows.

Not so much painting as posing.

I was disappointed that the book featured mostly posed 3d model type illustration and offered little in the way of actually painting on the computer. Maybe the title should have been digital fantasy image creation techniques. Being a painter I was just offended that the poser files with some lighting and photo shop filters is classified as painting. There are some good examples in the book of his technique and there are a few varied techniques. I was just hoping for something more about painting specifically.

Coleman's last two explosive, masterful collections were Mercurochrome, which was a finalist for the National Book Award, and Bathwater Wine, which was awarded the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. Ostinato Vamps seems markedly less verbally dazzling; it is also angrier and more willing to state the case for poetry-as-documentary: "there's the necessity of music cut with bloody weeping." A poem that paints a grotesque, devastating portrait of a homeless woman ("scratchin'/ that tattoo above her crepe-paper/ titty...") nevertheless ends with a kind of redeeming prayer-"moonsparkle angelsleep...." Some of the work here is not electric enough to shock redemption out of despair, but nevertheless talks straight about "happiness that has a price / tag on it." The two longer poems ("Night Widow Fugue" and "Sorceress of Muntu") weave several voices and narratives and snippets of blues lyrics into rich fields of human struggle, and possess a soaring, lyric openness where, in the confident leaps and breathing spaces, hope and resistance to socially imposed fate begin to burn in the voices portrayed-and in a reader's caught mind.

Fascinating and Complex Urban Poet

In this book, I'm talking back the rhythms that were stolen from my people. Our society has suppressed the spirit of African Americans, yet when I look around me and in the media, everybody is walking, talking and singing like black people. ~Wanda Coleman

Wanda Coleman's poems are wildly complex in form and I will admit to only understanding about a third of the hidden meanings. As I read her poems I am walking down dark streets when suddenly I turn a page and I am suddenly at home with a series of words. Then, I am thrown into a word maze again where words like odalisque, pandemic and narcoleptic pull my eyes hungrily across the pages of hurricane thoughts.

Wanda is known as an Urban Poet who has a love for unvarnished truth. She comments on everything from politics to hot love. Her poems dance with their own rhythm and are especially beautiful when she lets her goddess out to play. She is known for being one of the nation's best poet-performers.

While the complexity is inspiring and Wanda's use of words, stunning...I was so happy to find my way to the humor in "The History of My Body." Deep emotions dance between her words and sometimes she blatantly expresses inner torments like when she writes: "I have wrung my heart/in secret silence." At times her words seem to roll in hot lust or spring from the page in a mind jolting punch.

Wanda's poems inspire me to write and write. I write my own poems after reading her poems and I am amazed at how such complexity inspires my own awakening to myself. I understand her musings on some primal level where poets sometimes live but at times her language flies above me and I can't grasp at the meaning no matter how much I try. Sometimes I am so pleased to understand an entire poem and then I can wander through pages before enlightenment strikes again.

By the time I arrived at "Soul Traveler" I was writing my own poems. That is how much this book inspired me.

The poems are challenging and interesting and the vocabulary and visual images are just stunning:

...in rainbow-colored moss. There she thrived in volcanic
radiance & iridescent splendor yet she pined for
another world made steel by her false imaginings & in
the pitch of her moonless golden-apple grove she danced
her dissatisfactions amongst ghosts...

To write this way! What a dream.

The beat of a different drummer

Wanda Coleman has been dubbed the unofficial poet laureate of Los Angeles and with OSTINATO VAMPS she continues the traits that have been her hallmark for more than three decades. Her style is lyrically breathtaking as she repeatedly weaves voices and snippets of blues lyrics into poetic expressions that focus on the human struggle. Her words do both, explore familiar territory and shatter stereotypes, but her fidelity to the truth is buffered by the syncopated way she delivers. The poetry and prose possess a soaring openness and a biting wit, where socially imposed fate begins to burn in the reader's mind at the indifference of humankind. The empty sadness in the title 'Olio Intaglio', where a mother is left to suffer alone over the loss of her son, touches on how family and friends can be the cruelest of them all.
One caption refers to her as the poet with a warrior voice because of her inclination to peel away polite veneer and verbally dissect the heart of issues. She artfully reminds us that life is unfair, but it still belongs to the living. If you have a penchant for poetry that is rhythmic but not rhyming, that reaches to the core of a psycho-social America, I recommend OSTINATO VAMPS. The Vision and the Music

OSTINATO VAMPS is a gloriously ambitious book. Taken together, its poems form a visionary history of black, white, brown, and beige. Similar to the speaker in Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass," the "I" in these poems is a conduit for voices from the ancient past, the 19th century, the noir 40s of big band swing, the 50s of hipster bebop, and contemporary America. This is art as history redeemed: "aesthetics is the science of vulnerability/ bruises transformed, wounds immortalized..." Coleman is a virtuoso of many styles, laying down Thelonious Monk or Miles Davis, Robert Johnson or Billie Holiday, and sometimes rap or gospel. In a gorgeous poem called "Plum Hunger," she manages to merge W. C. Williams and Duke Ellington. There are people who still think Renaissance music should cue the rhythm of our poems. Coleman demonstrates that true American prosody is based on our native music. This is an important book. Do not miss it.

Definitely a good book

I do understand on how the book's description could be somewhat misleading. Not a book for the beginner, it does try nevertheless to simplify the process of painting fruits, leaves, flowers. It assumes you know about basic techniques. This is precisely why I liked the book so much. A book I will keep close-by. In regards to material: Economic 140 lb NOT watercolor paper and relatively inexpensive good synthetic brushes should definitely allow for the techniques to be performed with success. But, as with all things, persistent practice will be required.

the worst book on wc

This book shows absolutely nothing of painting techniques. After insisting that you absolutely must buy the most expensive brushes there is in order to succeed at wc, otherwise don't even bother trying, she randomly shows off some of her achievments (which are not bad), then gives you no more than 1 or 2 pages per project. It's another of those books that shows step 1, 2 and then pooff painting finished, what happened in between, go figure, or as they want you to, go buy another book that maybe, perhaps might give some better tips.

In short, her book is wishy washy, vague, short on technique, certainly won't help you learn to paint, serves only to awe you and put some bucks into her pocket and paintsuppliers' as well.

if this annual is any indication, everything now produced commercially is by either carson or a recently graduated designer or student whose masturbatory dreams are all of cut-up and halfway readable typography... Please tell me there is more to modern type than this! Did I waste my college years? Should I have been a biology major insted?

Melissa Leapman is a widely published sweater designer whose patterns have appeared in Vogue Knitting, Knitter’s, McCall’s, Family Circle, Better Homes and Gardens, Knit It!, and Interweave Knits magazines. Leapman has worked as a freelance designer for many leading ready-to-wear manufacturers, noted design houses, and major yarn companies. In addition, her knitting, crochet, and design workshops are extremely popular with crafters at all skill levels. She lives in New York City.

Crochet with caution

This started out as my favorite crochet book, but after making about six of the patterns from intermediate to advanced, I think it should come with several warnings.

1. The patterns really are too short. I'm no prude; I like my garments to be fairly form-fitting. But almost every single pattern is scaled to terminate at the waist. This isn't such a big deal for a summer tank like Helene, but why on earth would you want a long-sleeved, turtleneck aran sweater (Patti) short enough to show off your belly-button when you stretch? Aside from being fashionably silly, this negates one of the points of a sweater like this, which is to be warm. I've generally needed to add at least 1" to the bottom of the garments, often more.

2. Though the sizes go up to XXL, they're often scaled randomly. Don't just use your bust size; measure your body and check against the schematics (which are nicely provided and accurate). For example, the largest sleeve circumference in the Julianna lace cardigan is 13.75". I make a size large, and my arm is 13.5" -- with ease, even the XXL sleeve wouldn't fit me. I made the pattern on trust without checking this stat, and I ended up having to rip out the sleeves and improvise something that would fit.

3. Swatch swatch swatch. If you just buy an applicable yarn and crochet away, you're going to be disappointed. I've *never* successfully matched the gauge on any of these patterns. And not just by a little bit. Often I have to drop a yarn weight and 1-3 hook sizes, and I still end up crocheting a size smaller to match the schematics. Ms. Leapman must crochet very, very tightly. And tight crochet makes for stiff fabric and bad drape.

The patterns are still beautiful, and this is by far the best organized knit or crochet book I own; I don't understand why everyone doesn't do photo tables of contents of pattern books when they've already decided to spring for glossy color pages. Just crochet with caution.

The Best Crochet Book you'll ever own! 10 stars!

Wow! This is an incredible collection of crochet!!! Let's put aside the fact that this is a true blue "up to date fashion collection" many books claim they are - Cool Crochet really is.... There are halter tops, tank tops, skirts, cardigans even your teen would wear, the coolest purses, and the sweaters! Shew! They are awesome! My entire Xmas list Grandma to daughter will come from this book - it's that good!

This book is also beautifully illustrated: gage instructions -diagrams of the patterns with measurements - several pictures of each project. "Complete" easy to follow instructions - one of the easiest I've ever come across. There is a full explanation of every aspect of the project... the weight of the yarn, how many ounces, etc. This makes it very easy to substitute. BTW Red Heart Sport works great for all of the projects calling for a specialty sport weight yarn. In fact I've subbed all the yarns for Red Heart yarns - much cheaper and every project has turned out extremely well! Finger weight: use Red Heart baby, bulky use Red Heart Giant Pounder... you get the idea.

I've been crocheting for about 25 years now (I started young!) and I have many-many crochet books - folks this will be your favorite hands down! It is a must own for any person who craves crochet fashion you can't wait to wear and are proud as ever give! Buy confidently, you will be so happy you did~

This is a keeper!

I love this book! I buy and keep most of Melissa's crochet pattern books..I almost hate to call them patterns as they seem like works of art.

Although this book is not for the beginner, it would be worth it to have a look to see what you can aspire to! Intermediate to Advanced crocheter's will find at least two projects that they will want to finish ASAP. There are items to create for gifts and for yourself. Tops, blouses, swimwear, purses, hats, scarves, etc...you get the picture.

I have already picked out two pieces to create this summer

You won't be disappointed.

PS I've met and taken Melissa's classes at CGOA Conferences and she's as classy and nice as she comes across in her books!
