Once, they sold out stadium shows, topped sales charts, indulged all manner of excess, and married movie stars. They were southern rockers, players of "soulful, primal-rhythm anthems to hard living and problematic romance" and "good-time, no-holds-barred celebrations of both stoic independence and bar-hopping camaraderie." Finding precise criteria for who is and isn't a southern rocker rather eel-ly, Brant finally settles on music and sensibility rather than geographical origins. So Black Oak Arkansas isn't (it doesn't fit musically, and singer Jim Dandy Mangrum is from Michigan, f' God's sake), but Charlie Daniels (band and man), .38 Special, and Wet Willie get the nod. The Marshall Tucker Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the Allman Brothers get the most attention in Brant's chronological history that avoids dirt, "undue criticism," and lingering over trivialities (Gregg Allman's dalliance with Cher is barely mentioned). Critical Brant isn't. Still, he notes the bands' exuberant behavior and many vehicular casualties, though not luridly. A good addition to the pop music history shelves. Mike Tribby

Very good, although it only scratches the surface.

I found the book very enjoyable and informative. I believe I found a minor mistake though; "Georgia Peaches" is not on the original "Street Survivors" album, unless I am reading it wrong, page 179 indicates it is. Some portions of the book do tend to jump from one area to another without warning. Overall, the book has great stories and ties the various bands together well. This is a must for anyone interested in Southern rockers. Nice job Marley!

I am learning about different genres of music and this is one of them. Being raised in the south, this book shows me the ins and outs of southern rock music and the bands that created it.

NOT VERY WELL WRITTEN.

Taking a leaf out of the Billy James school of how not to write a biography (have you read the Michael Bruce book or Zoot Horn Rolo's?-i rest my case)I was looking forward to a good read about possibly my favourite genre of music-southern rock. Firstly it's not comprehensive. No point blank,mama's pride or raging slab for starters and i maintain that Black Oak are southern (they released the single 'hey y'all' for goodness sake)but what really irritates me is the way the author WILL NOT slag any band off! He sucks up to them all. No southern band every made a bad album in his opinion. There is good in all of them (no one can convince me that the latter Marshall Tucker without Toy Cadwell are any good or that 38 special issued some radio friendly dross) believe me i brought every southern rock album i could get my hands on (still do) and some went straight to the second hand shop they were so awful. This isn't conscrutive journalism, all this book is is a poorly written, badly edited book with some incredible trivia which i don't care about and frankly a waste of time. Please someone write a decent overview of this great music. Oh some other points the Allman brothers did NOT play the isle of Wight festival in 1970. The first time they played U.K was the 'wipe the windows' line up. Paul Kossoff was the guitarist in Free and Paul Rogers is the singer and thirdly as great as the Allmans 'filmore album' i'm sick of the John Coltrane comparisons in their jamming. even the most ardent Brothers fan must admit that there is absolutely no similarities!

This heavily illustrated volume chronicles the history of jazz and blues from their roots to the present day. In the introduction, jazz author and journalist Mandel explains that the book's intention is not to provide an exhaustive history; rather, he and the authors, drawn primarily from music journalism, hope that the selected eras and performers represent the breadth of styles and stories that make up jazz and blues. There is coverage of hundreds of musicians, ranging from blues guitarist Daddy Stovepipe, born in 1867, to jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman, born in 1966.

Aside from the opening chapter, which discusses the "early years," from the late 1890s through the 1910s, and the final one, focusing on contemporary musicians from the 1990s through today, the book is arranged chronologically into chapters representing one decade each. Each chapter begins with a one-page overview of culture and music during that decade and then treats jazz and blues histories separately. The authors include a detailed look at prominent musical styles and important events, several pages featuring the top four or five artists of the decade, and brief entries on other important musicians. Each chapter also features "WWW Track boxes" offering URLs linking to MP3 audio files. A general index, as well as separate indexes for jazz and blues musicians, is included, as are a glossary and several pages describing the equipment and instruments typically used by jazz and blues artists.

Although there are more in-depth reference sources, such as The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz (Grove, 2002) and All Music Guide to the Blues (Backbeat Books, 2003), this volume's extensive collection of photos, links to audio files, and inclusion of some of today's younger artists, such as Diana Krall and Nora Jones, make it a worthy supplement to other works. reader-friendly illustrated jazz history and reference

The innovative user-friendly touch of the Internet links is integrated into the sections of many of the artists (i. e., not put in an appendix or resources section at the back of the main text) by graphics with a web address. Another reader-friendly touch is a graphic noting the most representative recording by a particular musician. This is especially helpful considering the long careers, many recordings, and evolving styles of many of them. Most of the photographs show the artists in performance. Blues and Jazz are taken decade by decade from the early years through the nineteen twenties down to the eighties and the contemporary era, with a closing section on the instruments and equipment going with the two long-lasting and changeable types of music. Profiles of each artist cover biographical background, music career, and the artist's influences on or contributions to the field. For historical overview, comprehensive treatment of all the leading jazz and blues performers, and primary references cited, the "Illustrated Encyclopedia..." is an ideal introduction to these interrelated fields of music.

High school geometry at an elementary level

I will wait to give this to my grandson until he is at least in second grade. It teaches geometry concepts often not learned until high school geometry, but at a level appropriate for an elementary school student. I think my son, who is an architect, will enjoy sharing this book with my grandson at that time.

This book is part of a series that teaches kids all sorts of complicated subjects in a way that is easy to understand. There is simpler language that is accompanied by illustrations that allow kids to have fun while they learn. Kids are taught the fundamental properties of circles and couples fun activities that facilitates active learning. Terms are clearly explained through thoughtful and clear definitions and pictures, which will allow a deepen of learning and will engage all sorts of learners. A must for any teacher or parent that is trying to teach the concept of circles.

Gorgeous and useful as source of inspiration

This book has some innovative pools -- especially the one under a set of glass stairs in the entryway of a London building. There are indoor pools, outdoor pools, indoor-outdoor pools, the now-ubiquitous "infinite edge" pools and even "rustic" pools that look like natural ponds. Gorgeous! The book also covers Jacuzzis and pool-related structures, such as cabanas, waterfalls, and so on, but the focus here is high-end "cool" pools.

About the Author

South Dakota author Glen Rounds was born on April 4, 1906 in a sod house in the Dakota Badlands. The rugged beauty of his birthplace and childhood would shape his art throughout his life.

He grew up on a ranch in Montana, studied art at the Art Institute in Kansas City, spent one summer traveling with fellow student Jackson Pollock, and another summer traveling with his teacher, Thomas Hart Benton.

His first book, Ol’ Paul, the Mighty Logger, was published in 1936. His Whitey series, about a young cowboy and his cousin, was published from 1941 to 1963. His view of the Old West and his ability to tell tall tales through his writing and illustration are universally admired.

Mr. Rounds received more than 25 literary awards for his writing and illustrating including the Parents’ Choice Award, six Lewis Carroll Shelf awards, the New York Times Outstanding Book Award, and the Kerlan Award from the University of Minnesota.

Mr. Rounds died at his home in North Carolina on September 27, 2002 at the age of 96.

A good book for generating ideas

This is a very good book on the subject. Includes an outstanding collection of self-portraits by well-known artists of the past and present, including Lucian Freud, Gauguin, Rembrandt, Chuck Close, Vuillard, Edvard Munch, Edward Hopper, and many many more. The author presents ample examples in all media from chalk to oil, and discusses critical issues like lighting, the use of mirrors, the set-up. Honestly, this book is a steal for under $10. The other reviewer gave it low marks for being an older book...huh? Good art always grows better with age. Highly recommended.

Decent portrait examples.... not as much instruction... but will give a fair amount of inspiration as you pursue portrait painting... many different types of media are used from charcoal, pastel, to oil to watercolor, and acrylic... I enjoyed the book and will refer to it again..

Cover photo misleading

This book has some very beautiful patterns in it. I love the way the patterns incorporate embellishments such as buttons, etc...and there is a very nice variety from wearables to items for the home. Even a doggie sweater! I am not sure how many of these I will actually make, but they are just so beautiful to look at, I enjoy just flipping through this book. There truely are some gorgeous photos. However, the reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because I feel the cover photo is misleading. On the cover you see 5, possibly 6 crochet items. There is a filet pillowcase edging, 3 crochet pillows, a bedspread, and also the green pillow in back that I cannot tell if it is knit or crochet. Well, I expected the book to have patterns for these pillows....wrong! Out of these 6 handmade items on the cover there is a pattern for only 1 of them...the bedspread. So just beware, if you love the pillows like I did...forget it, you will not find those patterns in this book! Otherwise though, well done.

Not really what I expected

I had hoped that this book would share some lovely updated patterns for vintage style crochet items. I expected crochet trimmed pillowcases, dresser scarves, kitschy potholders, granny squares - things with a vintage feel that have been brought into the next century.

Unfortunately, this book only partially delivers. There are a few cute purse patterns I will likely try, a scarf that looks interesting and a round sofa pillow (all featuring the bobble stitch) but the clothing featured isn't too exciting and the home section is too small.

This is the kind of book that I like to browse at the bookshop but that I ultimately don't purchase. Now that I own it, I won't bother sending it back because I might make a few gifts from it, but for those looking for a book with fresh though vintage styled projects, I would suggest you keep looking.

About the Author
Lisa Lovett-Smith was born in 1967 in Barcelona of British parents. At 18, she began a meteoric career at Vogue magazine that took her to posts in London, Milan, Madrid and Paris. She now concentrates on writing in Barcelona where she lives with her daughter. Lisa has published five books on interiors, including London Living, the first in the new Living series, and Paris Interiors, Moroccan Interiors and Provençal Interiors. She has also published two books on fashion photography, and has curated various exhibitions in the fields of design and photography.

Pretty pictures...

Well, this is a beautiful book but the reason I purchased it was in hopes that it would give me some do-able Mediterranean-style decorating ideas. As I said, it contains amazing pictures but primarily of very authentic - old - mediterranean homes and mostly not something that I was looking to have in my home. I am not claiming that I was misled in anyway, I just wanted to provide this comment for future buyers who might have been thinking the same things I was...

This book is exellent for those that are looking to give their live style the mediterranean touch, from room decoration to architectural desing, from colors of the sea to earth tones. If you are looking for a book that gives you the feeling of being somewhere else, or that inspires you to change or update your current surrondings, this is the book.

Beautiful and inspiring

This is a great book for daydreamers as well as a great sourcebook of ideas if you want to add a touch of Med-Style to your home. It has great pictures (really great photography!!) with nice descriptive and often inspiring text by the author about the 22 homes of famous people like Pierre Cardin, Miguel Servera and Armani. If you look at the names you can also feel that this is not about the little cottages of the region, but some luxurious villas and mansions of these millionaires. But the book still gives you a great feel of the style and it does have really tasty interiors and gardens from all around the coast. I recommend it!!

His contemporary "banquet" addresses a range of related themes, including the role of alcohol and intoxication in rituals, myths, divine sacrifice, and religious symbolism, all those toasts to the sacred "spirits" involving libations and different forms of speech and enunciation--to the gods, to modernity, to the Absolute.

Affecting both mind and body, Nancy's subject becomes intoxicated: Ego sum, ego existo ebrius--I am, I exist--drunk.

Fantasy-film geeks revere Harryhausen's technically dazzling, meticulously crafted movies employing the painstaking technique of stop-motion animation. This coffee-table volume showcases the material Harryhausen discovered in his archives while researching Ray Harryhausen: An Animated Life (2004). Harryhausen stresses that this book isn't as much about animation as about the previsualization that precedes making the models that will be filmed; accordingly, it focuses on sketches, key drawings, storyboards, and preliminary clay models rather than film stills. Thematic chapters cover Harryhausen's early work, including his stint with animation legend Willis O'Brien on the King Kong quasi sequel, Mighty Joe Young; dinosaur movies, such as One Million Years B.C.; sci-fi flicks such as the 1953 War of the Worlds; and the series of films portraying the adventures of Sinbad of, more or less, the Arabian Nights. Like O'Brien before him, Harryhausen hugely influenced younger filmmakers. In the introduction, Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson says he grew up wanting to become Harryhausen's apprentice and notes that the animator's films "have lost none of their ability to provoke wonder." Ray Harryhausen, the greatest animator in movie history, recently completed the film The Tortoise and the Hare, a fairy tale originally begun more than fifty years ago; it was released to great acclaim. He lives in London.

Tony Dalton was involved in the publicity for Star Wars, The Towering Inferno, and
The Omen. A film historian and producer, he has written for Variety, Broadcast, and other industry magazines. He lives in London.

Peter Jackson is the Oscar-winning director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong.

An amazing and incredible testament to a major fantastic filmmaker.

To start with, this book reproduces so many unseen and barely- glimpsed-before drawings and concepts, that one can spend hours looking at each one again and again. So it is rare are we are afforded this backstage look at the making of those wonderful stop motion films. Harryhausen's legacy is testamony to a time when films were made of this kind, and they not only took a long time of thinking and planning to make, but the result on screen was epic and, worth the wait. Nowadays fantasy film effects are churned out so ad nauseum thanks to CGI, that they simply lose their wonder-it's like we're used to it. I'm a big fan of *real* model work and real matte painting. You could touch it and it had presence, and those little nuances people fault it for now, are what give it it's character and style. Because of that, Harryhausen's legacy stands on it's own and will be remembered well past his lifetime. Remember, even up to his last film CLASH OF THE TITANS(1981) he worked largely out of a very small studio-one time it was his garage(!!)with one or two assistants and that was only on later,larger budgeted pictures. What does that say compared nowadays to $150M dollar + effects films!!!???

And though retired, we have Harryhausen now, still working away with his drawings ans sculptures into his 80's. A man who loves what he does.I can't recommend this book enough, save to say that the reproduction is excellent on all the art shown-pencil sketches, storyboards, charcoal drawings. It's so nice to see drawings as opposed to overrendered computer artwork of nowadays.

Of note is the "Inspirations" part of the book where we see some of the artwork by others that inspired Ray to follow his muse. It says much about the man.

A Must-Have!

If you're a fan of Ray and his films, or even just a fan of great movies in general, this is a must-have book. There are plenty of other reviewers here who give details about the book, so I'll skip that and just say that it really does live up to the hype you're seeing here. Ray is a master (and a really nice guy too), and he speaks candidly and in detail about his life and films so it's an enjoyable and informative read. Plus the pictures are phenomenal. I don't know that I'd say this is better than the first book, because they're really both great.
