I was approached to work on this book

So many reviews state that this book seems just like a how to draw Manga book. Well, perhaps I can shed some light on why.

So one day, back in like 2003, I get an e-mail from Mr. Hart.
"Hello, I am making a new book about how to draw manhwa (Korean comics) and when I Googled `Korean' and `comics' I found your site. Would you be interested in providing some illustrations for the book?
Christopher Hart"

I reply a couple of hours later:
"Hello Mr Hart,
Yes, I am a comic artist who has spent time living in Korea.
I would be happy to discuss the details of the project more."
(I sign with my name and portfolio address)

He replies the next day:
"Who is this?
How did you get the address, and how did you know about my next book? If you want to work with me, you have to submit a portfolio. do you have any work online?
Christopher Hart"

Note that this was pre-Gmail days, so the complete text of his e-mail to me was included in my response. I respond:
"Hello Mr. Hart,
I think there may have been some misunderstanding, you contacted me about your book, and I was simply responding to your message. My portfolio is at (I include the link again). You mentioned you had already seen my site, and that is why you contacted me."

His response:
"What is this? I don't understand what I am looking at. I thought you were applying for a position drawing manhwa? This doesn't look anything like manhwa!!!"

Me:
"Hello again Mr. Hart,
As I said, I am not a Korean manhwa artist. I am an artist who has spend time in Korea. And I am not applying for anything, I am answering your e-mail. But since you are looking for something in a manhwa style, here are some quick samples.
(I attached some drawings of popular Korean characters, like Dooly the Dinosaur)

Chris responds:
"What is this? This doesn't look anything like Korean comics. I was looking for something like this."
(He attaches a page from a Japanese comic book, complete with japanese text)

Me:
"What you attached is manga. While there is are a lot of Korean comics drawn in a manga style, there are many other original styles that are exclusive to Korea."

Chris:
"Please stop e-mailing me."

And that was the end of my interaction with Mr. Christopher Hart.

Manhwa nothin'.

I got this book because I draw manga but decided that I wanted to do something a little different. The first few pages were great! They clearly showed the differences between manga and manhwa. Then he gives you a lot of pages for you to copy the drawings on and practice. Great idea! Except that its virtually all manga/anime stlye. It seemed just like some of the author's other how to draw manga books. I got this book because I DID NOT want a manga book but that's exactly what it turned out to be. If you're interested in drawing MANGA, this book is actually not too bad.

As a long-time reader of both Manga and Manhwa, I am very familiar with the various common styles they employ. Not only is the majority of art in this book terrible, it is not remotely Manhwa. I saw no heavier eyelashes, angular and sharper styles, stretched anatomy--all very common hallmarks of manhwa. Seriously. Take a moment to simply google "manhwa" and compare what you see to this junk. It is not remotely smiliar, unless the manhwa artist is actively employing a style closer to Japanese manga.

As I've improved in my own art over the years, I've realized how truly terrible Chris Hart's books are. Don't buy them. They will only teach you how to copy various pictures done by multiple artist in varying styles. Find a quality art book and then develop your own style. Draw from life. If you like Asian styles, dig up the How to Draw Manga series (the real one) that is translated from the Japanese series. Those are good. This is crap.

Average-quality full- color illustrations depict the flora and fauna that thrive in this harsh environment, but no distinction is made between the plants and animals found in the American West and those of the other desert areas. This may cause a great deal of confusion. The author makes mention of some of the natural resources that have been found "under desert floors," but again doesn't cite specific locations. The lifestyle of desert people is touched upon, but there is no indication as to which continents these nomads might roam. Unfortunately, the focus and scope of this book are just too broad for it to be an effective introduction.

One of the very best

If you love loose and juicy watercolor painting, you'll love this book.

It is filled with goodies, wonderful paintings and demos on how they were done. I have many books on the subject and this one ranks as one of my favorites. Landscapes and portraits all done with great flair

and a very high level of drawing skill. There is some similarity in style and approach to my other favorite watercolor artist, Charles Reid.

Mel Stabin is the real deal,very inspiring work of the highest order. Buy this book, you'll love it.

Excellent book for artists

This is an excellent book for not only water colorists but for all artists...I had to pick up courage to paint in a loose style for years...after going through this book, I attempted loose painting in water color and other media...the approach of "simple,fast,focussed' is indeed essential learning for an artist...Another book that can go with this is Kimon Nicolaides on" The Natural Way to draw"...these two books can let you free and bold in the world of fine art---drawing &painting...

A Five Star Book-Very Inspirational!

This excellent book is throughly deserving of its 5 star rating. The reproductions of Stabin's watercolors (150 of them) are beautiful. The text is clear and interesting. This is not a Step one-two-three book for beginners, although I think novices would enjoy it. Intermediate and advanced painters should definitely add it to their art libraries.

In 1892, these were the words used to describe the "Noble Life" of Frederick Douglass, a man from the humblest of beginnings who became a powerful and prolific opponent of slavery and injustice. With careful attention to historical detail, Adler presents a compelling exploration of Douglass's personal journey as well as an examination of his astute observations of the psychological effects of the institution of slavery on both the enslaved and the masters. A standout in the book is the description of the brutality of Douglass's childhood as a slave with an account of his near starvation and physical abuse that clearly demonstrates what ignited his passion for freedom for himself and others. A meeting between himself as an adult and one of his former masters is particularly mesmerizing. Photographs and engravings of Douglass at work, with his family, his home, and the office where he printed his famous newspaper, The North Star, remind readers that he was a real person, vulnerable and yet hopeful in his determination that all people would experience freedom. *Starred Review* Adler, the author of more than 200 books for young readers, has now written a thoroughly researched, lucidly written biography of the great Frederick Douglass. Born a slave in 1817 or 1818 (the date is uncertain), Douglass fled to freedom in 1838 and subsequently became one of America's most celebrated abolitionists, orators, and passionate champions of freedom for African Americans. His autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, published in 1845, became a best-seller and catapulted him to fame. Of course, any story of Douglass is also the story of slavery, and Adler does an excellent job of exploring the atrocities and dehumanizing indignities that America's “peculiar institution” visited on those who lived in slavery. As demonstrated by Adler's generous use of quotations from Douglass' own writings, many of the most dramatic of these abominations are the ones that Douglass himself suffered both before and after he became a free man. Though Adler may sometimes be too much an advocate for Douglass, giving too little attention to some of the many controversies that visited Douglass' life and career, he nevertheless clearly demonstrates that Douglass was, indeed, one of the great men of the nineteenth century. "On New Year's Day 1863, Frederick Douglass was in Boston. He and more than three thousand others, mostly African Americans, had crowded into Tremont Temple, a Baptist church sometimes used for public events. They were excited, anxiously waiting news from Washington. Close to midnight, someone rushed from the telegraph office with a message. The long-awaited Emancipation Proclamation had become law."

To internalize the eighty-six pages of FREDERICK DOUGLASS: A NOBLE LIFE that precede this particular passage is to understand what the Emancipation Proclamation becoming law really meant. Reading these pages that so graphically detail the nightmarish, sometimes lethal brutality to which Frederick Douglass and countless other slaves were subjected daily, makes all the difference in our ability to really grasp the true effect of that particular moment in history upon millions of American lives. In fact, I have to think that the impact of the Proclamation upon America far exceeded the import of Pearl Harbor or walking on the moon or 9/11. With the enactment of the Proclamation's provisions the lives of slaves were changed far more than were the lives of free whites when the Declaration of Independence was signed on the fourth of July in 1776.

Having being raised a slave who learned to read and write, Frederick Douglass escaped to became one of the most articulate and significant Americans of the nineteenth century. David Adler repeatedly quotes from the wealth of words spoken publicly and written by Douglass over the course of his lifetime. The author also presents relevant, parallel highlights of American history so that readers can better understand the political and social climate in which Douglass was living -- as a slave, as an escaped slave, and as a free man.

And what was Frederick Douglass's primary focus after that New Year's of rejoicing in Boston? He fought for the right to vote, so that everyone would have a voice in America. In his mind, (and as an attendee of the 1848 American women's rights conference in Seneca Falls, New York), this right should have also extended to women.

As a writer and sometimes-activist with never-ending hopes of doing a little something to change the world, I found FREDERICK DOUGLASS: A NOBLE LIFE to be an inspiring read about an inspiring American hero who made history and did change the world.

Frederick Douglass, a brilliant author, speaker, journalist, and activist, spent his childhood and teenage years enslaved in Maryland. Not only did he endure the oppression of having to work as a slave without any of the privileges enjoyed by whites, he was also subjected to physical violence, hunger, and other forms of brutality at the hands of several particularly cruel owners.

Escape by train to the northern states brought Douglass the precious freedom he had craved for years, but life was very difficult for a fugitive slave with no home, no job, and virtually no money. Douglass took a variety of odd jobs until his speaking skills caught the attention of noted abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. After their meeting, Douglass began to use his gifts with words to contribute to the abolitionist cause and raise awareness about the atrocities of slavery. He spent the rest of his life advocating for racial equality, women's rights, and social justice.

This new biography provides a highly readable and informative account of Frederick Douglass's life as an enslaved child and long-term opponent of institutionalized discrimination. His influential speeches, publications, and actions made an invaluable contribution to the end of slavery and the promotion of human rights for all. This contribution shines through in the book's comprehensible text, candid subject matter, and striking selection of images.

I ordered it for my third grader's history project because ...

I ordered it for my third grader's history project because the reviews said it was more historically accurate than the other Adler. However, the other "picture books" were a lot more third grade level. This one was a much longer chapter book (middle school level), so we read it by chapters over several nights, and then she paraphrased what we read the next day. It was extremely interesting and exciting. Because it was so long, I ended up skipping a few chapters so her paper would not be 20 pages!

Gorgeous kit!

I was able to find an Amazon 3rd Party vendor (rcarter1) who carried this kit in it's entirety. I received all the stamps, the book, the markers, the mini-stationery kit, and the stamp pads. The stamp pads were mostly dry but that's to be expected with a book this old. The gem is the combination of the beautiful stamps and a book with some lovely ideas in it.

If you're interested in Victorian art and creating your own items this kit is something you will enjoy. But a WARNING! Be sure to write to the vendor first to determine if he or she is selling the entire kit or just the book.

I ended up buying this twice, the first time from "greattimebooks" who still has it listed as "Very Good". What I received from "greattimebooks" was only the book, and it was NOT in "Very Good" condition at all. Nowhere in their listing do they state that you are only buying the book although the listing is for a stamp kit. I ended up writing to Amazon. I did receive an apology and a full refund, but of course Amazon cannot give me back the time I wasted after receiving an incomplete item and having to go looking for the same thing again. Lucky for me rcarter1 (an exceptional 3rd party vendor) had what I wanted and shipped it out immediately.

This book is a good overview of authentic, natural, and historical country styles and their elements. If you're a fan of rural homes and rooms in primarily Europe and America that don't look over decorated, and have natural textures, features, and materials, you'll enjoy this book. The pictures are lovely and the author, Judith Miller, is an expert on design and a delight to read.

"Magic and Misery" is a very funny, insightful and entertaining exploration of surviving high school. Peter Marino answers many questions teenagers have that are often difficult to ask parents and teachers. By the end of the book, the characters are wiser, stronger, and more mature, giving the reader a chance to grow, too. It's a wonderful joy ride that will stay with me a long, long time. Just learning the meaning of the word "fago" is worth the price of the book.

Marino's done it again!!!

Peter Marino (author of "Dough Boy") has crafted yet another brilliant book for anyone who has ever experienced insecurity (and let's face it, who hasn't?). The book is designed for teens, but reads well for adults. In fact, I would argue that "Magic and Misery" reads even better for adults than "Dough Boy", although both would be great reads for any age.

Marino's dialogue is witty and sharp, particularly in the characters of TJ and Pan, who are best friends, despite being unpopular with their classmates. The two share a self-deprecating wit that is often laugh-out-loud hilarious to the reader. Unlike Dough Boy, this book centers on a young girl, who is not nearly as unpopular as Tristan. Because of that, the humor is not quite as sharp or biting as it is in "Dough Boy", but it is still present, and the novel is still hysterically funny at times.

While I would argue that "Dough Boy" is simultaneously funnier and more depressing than "Magic and Misery", this novel is no less effective or well-written. It simply has a more even, and in many ways, more mature tone. As before, the characters are fully defined and three-dimensional.

The boys in school are still mean, as they were in "dough boy", but the meanness in this novel has mostly to due with TJ's poor economic background, along with the general boredom of growing up in a small town. While TJ interprets their cruelty as being about her appearance, it's obvious from other characters' reactions to her that she is a lot more attractive than she believes herself to be.

While this novel has two clearly defined villains (in Samsonite and Torno), the novelist does show us other sides to the villains' personalities (for instance, Torno has two ailing and elderly grandparents whom he has affection for), and it's made clear that their meanness is more reflective of their boredom than their cruelty. Not that their meanness is any less painful for TJ or Pan, but it makes the reader understand that even the "Villains" can be human. I'd like to see that in a "Twilight" novel please! :O)

I found all of Magic's characters to be honest, believable, and so well described that I could imagine each of them popping up in my daily life. Marino's primary achievement in both novels is the lack of stereotypes. Oh sure, some characters start out as the dumb jock, the gay guy, the awkward girl, and so on, but he ladens each character with such depth, such pathos, and such dimension, I found myself empathizing with all of the characters, including the parents and the villains. While detesting how certain characters treated TJ and Pan, I never felt that those characters were two-dimensional or cliched. I found each character to be fully human and believable.

When I first heard these books were for teens, I had doubts if I would enjoy them (I'm a 31-year old man). Certainly at moments I wished "Dough Boy" would be darker, but I never had that wish with this novel. While it isn't "dark" per se, the tone felt right. It felt suspenseful, mysterious, funny, and sad at all the right moments. I actually teared up at several key sections, and found myself laughing out loud at several others.

While "Dough Boy" is absolutely perfect for ages 13 and up, I have reservations recommending this book for people under 16. Unlike "Dough Boy", this novel touches on sex in a slightly more adult fashion. Never going into extreme details, I certainly wouldn't associate this book with trashy romance novels, but it does deal with the issue in a much more frank manner that some under the age of 16 may not be comfortable with (or, more specifically, their PARENTS may not be comfortable with young teens reading it). Still, the novel is always tasteful, exceedingly honest, and believable. There is nothing trashy or reprehensible about the way sex is treated in this novel; it is simply frank at points which may upset some parents. Teens who have had sex, have thought about it, or are familiar with the subject will probably have no issue with the way it is treated here.

Marino is a master at his craft, and frankly, I believe he is at the top of his game with this novel. It is a tribute to his extreme talent as a writer that I felt engaged by each and every character; engulfed in laughter or tears by each and every scene. When "Dough Boy" ended, I felt a slight disappointment, like I wished there was more. It was a brilliant novel, but it left me with a craving. At the end of "Magic", I felt complete. Perhaps the two novels together gave me what I wanted, or perhaps "Magic" simply has a more satisfying finale. I don't know why. In any case, I felt at ease, I felt like I was in the hands of a master novelist reading these books, and I believe you'll enjoy them as well.

I cannot say enough great things about this writer, and I cannot wait for the next amazing book to come from Peter Marino.

Everything to like.

I just finished Magic and Misery by Peter Marino.

It is marvelous because he dares to treat ordinary people as if they are relevant.

I'm drowing in a sea of Gossip Girls and their copykittens, and here's a book about a lower income, very bright teen girl who after school works in a pharmacy (where the assistant manager is consumed by her thwarted ambition and calls herself the "manager" as a result) and who gets a crush on the cutest boy in school. They become best friends, but her time mooning over him is short because he comes out almost immediately. And they __remain__ best friends.

When the inevitable real boyfriend shows up and threatens their friendship, the situation is handled with compassion and realistic detail. And there is even a healthy teen tex aspect, where they prepare for the situation and don't cringe with remorse after it. The sexual questioning/bully story is also well done.

I even like the cover art, which shows (gasp!) a healthy weight teen female holding hands with both her boyfriend and best friend.
