I found this book very helpful in collaging mulberry papers to add rich texture or as a remedy to unsuccessful paintings. It is very inspirational for sumi landscape painters like me. The marriage of watercolor and oriental paper collage can free us from the restrictions of traditional landscape paintings and permit us to handle our brushes and paints in more loose and expressive manners.

Good all in one book for the beginner

Getting started with drawing or painting can be overwhelming, especially if your using many of the great books out there to learn by.
This one guides you along very well in that it eases you into the rules of perspective and portraying anatomy in a gentle and easy to absorb manner.
Stan Smith uses simple drawings rather than photographs to explain portraying anatomy, which I found easy to reproduce. This gave me the confidence to continue on and wasn't as intimidating as some so called beginner books can be.
He then follows on with examples of perspective that can go into a little to much detail in some areas, but covers the basics very well.
The composition section was especially helpful as it uses both samples of famous works and simple manikin and object set up to explain proper composition, and he does it in a way that won't be beyond the beginner.
Overall its a great all in one starter book. If you don't want to waste time reading seperate books on each subject then this ones for you.

This book is an EXTENSIVE overview of human anatomy, with numerous, detailed sketches of the musculature and skeleton. The author advises against shortcuts, when it comes to studying anatomy: "A common mistake made by artists is to bypass an appreciation of the skeleton in favour of a superficial knowledge of muscles and fat."

This book is filled with recycling facts and helpful tips. Miller does an amazing job of blending fiction and nonfiction. The children in the story are working together to clean up a vacant lot and although the story is fiction it could easily spark personal narrative writing ideas.

Don’t forget to “read” the illustrations. The facial expression on the insects and rats make their personalities come to life. They are also beneficial when teaching students to infer feelings.

Finally this is a perfect book to read on Earth Day and the message that children working together can make a difference is ideal for young children.

In the l8th century, Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun recalls her technique for making the most of the looks of the women she painted. The author shows how for 500 years women have made up a sigificant minority of the community of working artists. The book is lavishly illustrated with rarely seen images of women artists at work and of the paintings and sculptures they produced. This book would make a wonderful present!

Practical book for beginning sumi-e painters

This is a very practical book for the beginning student of Chinese or Japanese brush painting. Clear, simple and precise illustrations show how to execute the traditional"four gentlemen"- bamboo, orchid, chrysanthemum, and plum. Students will learn such important concepts as how to achieve depth by double dipping the brush into a darker tone of ink, how to achieve movement by varying the pressure on the brush and how to achieve texture by varying the amount of moisture in the brush. The bonuses of this book are the examples of other forms one can make using related strokes. For example, after mastering the bamboo leaves one can easily paint a bird, lizard, or butterfly. After mastering the orchid leaves one can use the same strokes to paint fish, underwater grasses, and water lilies. Once students gain confidence they can naturally go on to master tiger lilies, rocks, mountains, and pine trees, all beautifully illustrated in this book.

What a great book for those of us who love sumi-e, but are not necessarily trained or gifted artists already. I had some classes many years ago, so I had the basics, but Yolanda teaches in a very simple and understandable way - and I found it quickly improved my ability to express my visions in ink. Nice.

i guess i expected something else...

...i expected the book to also weave into the "mix" the new digital world with many of these expensive machines now so cost-effectively reduced to computer programs-- BUT, it is detailed and all the basic principles and most terms still apply. it just seems so dated to be giving so much attention to what must have been quickly fading technology like 4 track tape machines even in 1996 (print date...). if you want to do it "the old fashioned way" then it seems to be a great book-

This book tells all u need to create your own recording studio, your recording sessions, making your demos and/or making or selling your own music plus creating your own label and publisher. I haven't even read it yet but ASAP I will. Just finished reading Conducting Technique for Beginners and Professionals by Brock McElheran and Everything You'd Better Know About the Record Industry by Kashif.

So look likes to me that this may help me grow more and be familiar of w'sup in the music and entertainment industry incl. in film, video, TV and plays too.

While there's some good info contained in this book about the basics of home recording, overall I would not recommend this book as it's copyrighted 1996 and talks a lot about cassette recorders and Portastudio technology of the time.

Better than Hogarth's 'Dynamic Anatomy'

An excellent small, less expensive book that even so provides tremendous information. At the very back is a small section on animal anatomy, too, so the falcon flaps correctly. Sets photos or artwork against the skeletal or flayed figures to show how the diagrams relate to the real thing. Good attention to some small details not always covered, like how to make the teeth in a smile look good, or the different proportions of the child to the adult figure. Also shows the *properly* articulated wooden model, not the horror usually sold, which will screw up your figure drawing because the shoulders are articulated inaccurately.

After the marriage, however, the woman grows to loathe her stepdaughter, and she and her daughter treat Maha like a slave. One day, the poor girl rescues a talking red fish that helps her over the years. Finally, it provides her with fine clothes so that she may attend a wealthy young woman's bridal ritual. She stays too long, and in her flight, she loses one of her golden sandals. Tariq, the bride's brother, finds it, and his mother searches the city for the owner of the shoe. Maha's foot is a perfect fit and she and Tariq live happily ever after. In her gracefully written narrative, Hickox effectively blends many familiar touches with elements of the story that will be new to Western audiences. An author's note provides the sources for this well-told tale. Hillenbrand's delicate, textured illustrations have the look of watered silk touched with glowing jewel-toned accents. This is a Cinderella type story that takes place in the middle east. It takes some tradional customs and places them in a context that is easy for the western student to understand. A great book for fans of Cinderella, too.

Out of all the Cinderella variation stories this so far ...

Out of all the Cinderella variation stories this so far is the one that is most interesting since so much of it is quite different from the original and more well-known versions. There is no familiar background, the culture is different and it is the child who ends up begging her wise father to remarry although he refuses at the beginning since he knows what is going on. Culturally-wise I am still trying to figure out why he did continue to marry the neighbor since I thought the man was in charge.

Anyway it takes a bit of adjusting and getting used to the idea when you are reading the book. What makes it easier is that it seems to combine just a bit of the Chinese Cinderella along with its own natural storyline.

The pictures were charming and cute while helping to convey the reader over to the Middle East. The only true complaint that I had about the book was the fact that the stepsister was made not only to look ugly but way older than her years would warrant, which has me wondering why on that front.

Very original, well-researched, and readable work of Comparative Literature (English and German) that deserves a wide audience.

The title of this book alone is almost with the price of the book. It is an amazing work of synthesis that brings together English, Austrian, and German literature, philosophy, and book history in relation to Freud's essay on the uncanny and a host of philosophical works and, kind of like Kittler in Discourse Networks, contemporary texts about how to live the good life that match the literary ones. Kreinenbrock weaves his accounts of how fiction is a response to things going wrong in everyday life, like losing your keys, together with Freud and Adorno, among others. In some cases, objects become spiteful because matter has been possessed by demons! I learned a lot from this book. Anyone interested in thing theory or material culture should read it. I ran across this book by chance while working on Sterne's Tristram Shandy. In the book's second chapter, Kreinenbrock manages to make that wonderful novel come alive once again while bringing little known but fascinating German authors to the attention of Anglophone readers. I have been reading Thomas Bernhard's works for over twenty years, but I had never heard of Heimito von Doderer. The third chapter focuses on Jean-Paul Richter, and most of the works Krienenbrock discusses have been translated into English. Here the focus is on Stoicism as a remedy for anger. The fourth chapter addresses Friedrich Theodor Fischer may be the most interesting writer discussed in the book. However, the novel Kreinenbrock discusses, Auch Eeiner, has not been translated into English. You can find part of his novel Auch Einer [Another One] translated in a book entitled _The Humour of Germany_ tr. with introduction and biographical index by Hans M©'ller-Casenov; with illustrations by C. E. Brock as "A Rabid Philosopher." pp. 146-58. _Auch Einer_ is available on amazon kindle for free (in German). And you can find a facing page by page facsimile edition and diplomatic transcription on DeutscheTextArkiv. (Vischer, Friedrich Theodor von: Auch Einer. Eine Reisebekanntschaft. Bd. 1. Stuttgart u. a., 1879.) I also bought a hard copy of the German novel. I now want to improve my German so I can read it. The final chapter is on Heimito Von Doderer's works, and mss of them have been translated into English. The epilogue finishes up with Freud on the uncanny and repetition compulsion. _Malicious Objects_ deserves a very wide audience. I found it much more accessible than Ghostly Apparitions: German Idealism, the Gothic Novel, and Optical Media. Kreienenbrock's chapter on von Doderer, the Nazi Austrian, would dovetail nicely with a critical analysis of Thomas Bernhard, the anti-Nazi satirist. Indeed, Bernhard mentions Jean Paul and Siebenkas in Extinction: A Novel (Vintage International).
