Bright Pictures and Cool Information!

"Bug Shots" has a lot of cool information about bugs and insects. I read about body parts, the difference between bugs and insects and even how some insects eat poop! There are also very brightly colored pictures (photos) that show the creatures close up.

I think many kids and adults would like this book, especially to look at the photos.

My favorite part of this book was learning how bugs help us and don't really hurt us and seeing the creatures up close.

Boys and girls would like this book. I think all people ages 6 - 43 would like this book.

I like the details of all your favorite bugs! What bugs are the good guys and what are just pests. Lots of enlarged photos describing their body parts, how they work, and what they do.

I purchased this book many years ago and have kept it close at hand ever since. I found it inspiring to read about and see the results of Mr. Dwiggins' dedicated efforts in this area. I have built several adaptations using the information provided in this book and found it to be quite a rewarding experience. Life like movement is a hallmark quality of the Dwiggins marionette. There is enough information in this book for an experienced technician to be quite successful in producing a working example. --I boght this book from the Puppeteers of America store.

This book has never been misused. It is in mint condition. It has always been covered with the plastic dust jacket. --Puppeteera os America

This book is a treasure. The actual production of the book is quite beautiful with full color prints of Mr. Dwiggins masterpieces. I purchased this book many years ago and have kept it close at hand ever since. I found it inspiring to read about and see the results of Mr. Dwiggins' dedicated efforts in this area. I have built several adaptations using the information provided in this book and found it to be quite a rewarding experience. Life like movement is a hallmark quality of the Dwiggins marionette. There is enough information in this book for an experienced technician to be quite successful in producing a working example.

Very nicely designed and printed (in Japan)

A very interesting book...but it is HUGE! Plan to sit this on a table when you read it. Very nicely designed and printed (in Japan). I think this was a tribute to Dwiggin's work as a graphic designer/artist, and maybe the size of the book was chosen in part to purposely contrast with the diminutive (12" tall) nature of his marionettes. Expensive, but if you have any significant interest in marionettes, or the inner workings of a very unique, skilled, and creative man and his friends, then check this one out. I deduct a star because it is so damn big I can't lean back with it on my couch and enjoy it as I sip a cup of coffee.

Why can't we have THAT subway system in MY city?

This book contains loads of captivating info on that giant web that is the NY subway. Brian Cudahy seems to have a thorough knowledge of transit affairs, and of NY (he grew up in Brooklyn). This is not his first book on the subject, and he treats it with a personal touch that makes it very captivating to anybody, not just New Yorkers. This book is a treasure of little-known facts, peculiarities and anecdotes. I had a lot of fun reading it along with a map of today's network, to see how it evolved (and sometimes "devolved"). Very lively, with some classic NY politics, some catastrophies (including the departure of the Dodgers), and descriptions of how the subway helped make NY what it is today. Under the Sidewalks of NY made me go to bed late the way The Godfather did! I would recommend this book not only to every New Yorker, but also to anybody interested in NY and/or urban transit.

Great subject, poor writing

I want to know the history of the subway system in New York. It has always fascinated me from an engineering and histroical standpoint and as a frequent rider (mostly on the Green Lexington 4 Line, between Wall Street, Grand Central and Yanqui Stadium) I am a great fan.
But try as I might, I could not finish this book. Turgid, it is. What a waste of a beautiful subject!

He argues that writing should not be treated as a simple skill, as a naïve self expression, or as a tool for personal advancement, but rather as a reflection of social and psychical forces, such as jouissance (enjoyment/sensual pleasure), desire, and fantasy-creating a more sophisticated, panoptic form. This is a fun book that both the serious and non-serious dinosaur lover will get a lot out of, including a bit of giggle time!

The Oviraptor would settle for pinecones, but if he spotted a "fat, crispy beetle" on a pile of dino poop that was it. YUM! Millions and millions of years ago there were lots of dinosaurs to watch out for and if you just happened to be alive then you might have been a little snack like that beetle. There was the Euoplocephalus with his "armored led, armored body, armored face" and a clubbed tail. There were many like the Tyrannosaurus rex, the Triceratops, the Edmontosaurus, the Velociraptor, the Coelophysis, the Iguanodon, the Baryonyx and the Brachiosaurus.

Big or small, there's no escape
once my gang give chase,
We sprint . . . and leap,
climbing leathery mountains of dino flesh
with the huge claws on our feet.
Then comes our favorite part-
EAT! EAT! EAT!

This is a fun book that both the serious and non-serious dinosaur lover will get a lot out of, including a bit of giggle time. The authors don't gloss over certain facts of life and the words "fart" and "poop" are used, but not overused in the text. Each beautifully illustrated dinosaur is on a two-page spread. On one side is a nice story book blurb about the dino and on the other is some factual material with simple line drawings. You will learn the pronunciation of the name, when they lived, their size, diet, etc. In the back of the book is a glossary and a brief timeline. If you give this one to a youngster in your house and you hear a big guffaw, you'll know he or she has hit the last poop page!

Gruesome fun for young dinosaur lovers

What a great approach: a fun book which has delighted my daughter with a combination of facts about her favourite subject (dinosaurs) with prose which gently celebrates the grisly and gruesome side of nature (including some mildly rude words about bodily functions). Each two page spread features a scene and a short piece of prose or rhyme about the eating habits of a famous, or not so famous dinosaur. Side bars add facts and dates, whilst a glossary defines some of the more obscure phrases (serrated teeth, omnivore). Following a similar format to Yum-Yum and other books in the Wonderwise series by the same authors this book is a perfect example of how to bridge the gap between fact and fiction for early school and pre-school aged children. A must for young lovers of dinosaurs.

lots of techniques to try

The author covers a lot of ground quickly here. While not as in-depth as Traci Bautista's "Collage Unleashed," Davies touches on many techniques and applications. The examples were way too bright for my tastes and didn't personally inspire me, but they work well as examples to see what's going on with the technique and provide a nice change of pace from the muted Victoriana that's so prevalent elsewhere. The photos also show the hand models with paint on them, which I really enjoyed after seeing many impossibly clean hands in other books. Yes! You will get paint on your hands and it's OK! I particularly enjoyed the Prayer Flags project, modelled after Tibetan prayer flags, and the Book Page Collage & Letter Stamps ideas.

fantastic book

Great book, with excellent techniques clearly demonstrated. Would recommed it for beginners to expects in collage technique. Very inspiring use of original paper for collage. Jane covers everything from the color wheel to creating you own collage paper. I borrowed the book from my local library until I decided I needed to own it. Jane has a new book Collage Journeys: A Practical Guide to Creating Personal Artwork that is fantastic too.

I was searching for a book to accompany a class I'm teaching on hand painted paper collage, and this is the perfect one! With clear, detailed instructions and lots of photos, it'll be of great help when I'm preparing for my class, as well as a wonderful addition to my mixed media art library.

About the Author
Diane Dawson Hearn attended the Rhode Island School of Design and The School of Visual Arts in New York City. After graduating with a B.F.A. in illustration she began my career in book illustration. More than fifty books later, she's still excited to be a part of this wonderful field. She has also done humorous spots for magazines, greeting cards, a cat calendar, and character designs for a Jim Henson television special. She enjoys drawing all kinds of subject matter, from the fantastic or humorous to the more naturalistic.

Nancy Smiler Levinson attended the University of Minnesota where she majored in journalism. She worked in newspaper and magazine writing and then editing at a publishing house in New York City. But she ventured down an entirely new path in her writing career after she married, moved to California, and became the mother of two sons. She began to write books for children. Writing for young readers is the most joyful and challenging work she has ever done. Now her children are grown. She lives with her husband and her retriever, Scarlett, in Beverly Hills, California. She also visits classrooms with presentations that share the joy of literature and encourage children to read and write.

Really Nice Basic Reader about the North and South Poles

I highly recommend this book for students who read at the beginning level or need some reinforcement on understanding the North/South Poles. It provides good clear information with a great comparison/ contrast format. I learned a lot from it!

Great Educational book

I appreciated this book and bought multiple copies for my class. It not only has wonderful comparisons about the NORTH POLE SOUTH POLE but is packed with great facts. The book reaches across the various levels in my classroom - great pictures and simple enough for my struggling readers and text with vocabulary that challenges my top readers. I like this book!!

Cute and short, very similar to a leveled reader. The book first introduces the North pole (animals, attributes, etc),then moves to the South Pole. It was very useful when comparing and contrasting. 1st-early 2nd grade level.

A Classic Turns 60

Next year is the 60'th anniversary of this classic text of the daughter of Sigmund Freud. A great opportunity to pick up this booklet for a (re-)read. The writing is clear, lucid and quite dense. The reading is full of invitations for further thoughts and reflections about the various defense mechanisms with special emphasis on the ego. The style is friendly in the best sense.

The only problem is its high information density. Other authors write books about the contents of a single chapter. This might lead to some exhaustion, if you are not deep in the Freudian terminology. But everything is explained and the work spent will be well rewarded.
